Product Description
SANAE MENTIS provides a provocative discourse into the social ills confronting our youth today. With startling disclosures, it addresses the reality of two worlds converging, both expressive of life itself, as only each has experienced it. The author sets out to delve into the hearts of these young people in a quest to understand what has increasingly professed itself as a degenerative nature with uncompromising voice. Sanae Mentis allows us to hear the crying voices of children who are in need of help, as they struggle to survive in a world which has changed so rapidly and promiscuously at their expense. As an educator, parent, and counselor, I find this book to be significantly worthy in its portrayal of youth in crisis. The poignant stories of its characters, serve to remind all of us that 'no man is an island.'The overriding moral responsibility of a civilized society is designed to nurture and provide our children with the opportunity to become productive and creditable citizens. We must prepare them holistically, to face the challenges of today and tomorrow's world. Not withstanding our own coup d'etat, adults must collectively acknowledge their precarious roles in having created these potentially negative and explosive scenarios. Righting the wrong, that we have in our society, can only be done by recapturing the definitive integrity and sound authority of our moral values. Then and only then, can we thwart the decaying values of a generation trapped in regrettable chaos and detrimental conflict. The stage must be set on a proper course toward a positive mode.As a wife and mother, I applaud the efforts of the author in sharing his story with all of us who share the joy and yes, the pain of raising children who will ultimately shape the face of centuries to come. ... Product Description
Save the Teens: Preventing suicide, depression and addiction is a non-fiction book written by a mother who lost her 18 year-old son to suicide in 2005, but it is not a memoir. The author researched all the topics that made her wonder why her only child would perform such a horrendous act; such as teen depression, mood disorders, methamphetamine, addictions, and suicide. After a year of research, she realized she had enough information for a book and wanted to share it with other parents in hopes of saving their teens from a possible suicide. The book opens with the day the author s son took his life (only chapter that is all memoir but it sets the stage perfectly for the rest of the book). The book is set up differently in that the left pages contain the author s son s writing and artwork as well memoir as it pertains to the current chapter which is the research located on the right hand pages. The writings and artwork provide examples of a teen s depression. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful yet tragic read, highly recommended
The weight of the world can be too much, combined with the perception no one cares. "Save the Teens: Preventing Suicide, Depression, and Addiction" is a memoir of Carolyn C. Zahnow along with her own urges to help other mothers cope with the worst feelings they can have - the loss of a child. Losing her own son to his suicide, she urges mothers to take a more active role in their child's lives, and help them fight teenage depression and addiction as the root causes of suicide. "Save the Teens" is a powerful yet tragic read, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, hope-raising book
I don't think I was prepared for the profound impact this book had on me -- as a parents, I can't even wrap my mind around what the author went through. Yet, she was able to turn her pain around and channel it toward the creation of a life-saving tool which will undoubtedly appeal to parents, teens and teachers.

I thought the approach of including her son's writings and illustrations, along with the author's extensive research, allows the reader to fully absorb the seriousness of the matter at hand.

I passed the book to my sons -- both teenagers -- and they thought it was easy to understand and very informative. As a parent, I consider it a valuable guide for anyone dealing with teenagers and the different phases they go through in life.

Definitely a book I would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, ground-breaking and insightful book
This book should be on the shelf of every parent with teen-aged children.Ms. Zahnow takes her heart-felt experience of losing her only child to suicide and marries it with important research in the fields of depression, addiction and suicide.I lost both of my parents and only sibling to suicide and am very well-read on depression and addiction.Ms. Zahnow, a loving mother that took all of the "right" steps to help her son, provides insight that only a parent that has lived with a depressed teen can provide. If you know of a teen that is experiencing depression or addiction (they often go hand-in-hand) I encourage you to purchase this book for yourself and for their loved ones. This author has tackled several difficult topics and has written concise steps that can be taken to help teenagers. The book is worth the purchase just for the "Resources" section alone.I highly recommend this book and hope to see more writings from this author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Addiction: The high that brings you down
Overall I thought this book was very informative but more importantly, this book exemplified reality. Too often drug abuse is misinterpreted by many on account of generalized stereotypes, scare tactics and inaccurate information, this book refrained from all of the above. Also this book isdirected towards the adolescent reader and as a result, puts manycomplicated physiological terms and processes in to comprehendable readingmaterial (without losing or misconstruing the definition or meaning).Ithink this book did an amazing job at explaining the facts and consequencesof drug use. This is the kind of book that should be incorporated somehowinto the high school education curriculum. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ANYTIME YOU NEED IT SUPPORT
This little pocket size book has been vital for those times when I need to get out of my own head for a second in a healthy way and gain nurishing food for thought. I've thought many times about the message I've received when I opened it up, it's right where I am emotionally even if I don't really want to see it at the time. I hasn't failed yet to deliver just what I need to hear when I need to hear it.
I've since purchased The Pocket Sponsor for all my sponcees and they love it. I've given them as gifts and used them as topics for discussion groups. There isn't one person that I've shared this little book with that doesn't agree that it has powerful messages.
It's a terrific book!!! I carry it on the motorcycle, in my purse, in my pocket, it even goes to the beach with me.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have acceptance of others, gratitude and some peace of mind in their lives. That's how it works for me anyway, one day at a time and sometimes one minute at a time. Whatever works for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Helpful
This book fits right in my pocket and when I feel a little shaky about keeping clean and sober I just take it out and read the meditation for that day and hour.I'm always surprised about how many times it hits the nail on the head and I go on with my day clean and sober!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom for every hour of every day
From John Howard Prin, author of STOLEN HOURS: Breaking Free From Secret Addictions, Syren Books, 2004

This dandy tool belongs in every recovering addict's pocket. I consider it a tool because for anyone who was once captive to addictive urges its small size contains huge pay-offs -- it serves the person seeking sobriety as a combination daily devotional/day planner. Regardless of what time of day or night (or week or month), the POCKET SPONSOR provides pithy advice.

It is divided into 24 brief paragraphs-with-sayings for every hour of each day, Day 1 through Day 31. Like one's sponsor in an AA or other 12-Step group, it provides the guidance and encouragement in writing that the sponsor would usually provide in conversation. Designed as a basic 24/7 form of support, it allows the beginner, or those beginning again, to carry a little bit of the fellowship from their 12-step meetings with them wherever they go.

As a professional counselor and recovering individual myself, I agree with the author when she says, "Anytime during the day that you feel uneasy, find the day and hour and read your message...Again and again, you will discover new passages that are exactly what you need at that moment."

Product Description
The Rich Kid Syndrome, by Steve Wolf, takes an original and eye-opening perspective on modern adolescent behavior, addiction, and family relations. Not taking anything away from contemporary psychological or medical understandings of teenage acting-out behaviors, author Wolf boldly goes where few psychologists, sociologists, and drug counselors have gone to acquire a deeper appreciation for why kids misbehave in their teen years. The Rich Kid Syndrome grapples with the threats posed by middle-class culture and the entitlement issues that can manifest in contemporary adolescent conduct.Wolf posits that mental, emotional, and judgmental attitudes stemming from middle-class, ?rich kid.? lifestyles give rise to a fertile ground of toxic, acting-out behaviors like drug addiction and improper risk-taking.Written with families in mind, The Rich Kid Syndrome is a must read for parents ready to throw in the towel, and for professionals who end up with more questions than answers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Easy Read, Perfect for all kids and parents with children in need of help
Steve Wolf's "rich kid syndrome" is a narrative on today's youth, but the title doesent do it enough justice. Although the author intends to reach a specific crowd, namely kids from a privileged lifestyle, it applies to all youth who are experiencing troubled times and abuse and use of drugs and alcohol. Its a great story of a young man who has come from a bad place and made a name for himself, and its a great offering to any parent with a troubled teen, and any teen that believes he/she is alone and there is nobody out there that can help. If you have been stressed and strained from your child's behavior, or if you are a teen with enough courage to take the next step alone, this book could very well change your life. ... Read more
