Product Description
Every day, even in 'safe' places like school, teens face complicated decisions about personal behaviour, involving everything from drinking and drugs, to sex. Unfortunately, many adults don't fully grasp the true scope of this perilous world. Stephen Wallace points out the 'reality gap' separating parents and adults from young people at the time they need them most - adolescence - and offers concrete solutions to bridge this gulf. Grounded in hard-facts with practical, common-sense advice, "Reality Gap" combines Wallace's 25-plus years of experience working with young people as a school psychologist, adolescent counsellor, camp director and college professor with groundbreaking research on adolescent attitudes and behaviours from SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions).Wallace includes concrete suggestions for improving teen-adult communication as well as age-specific 'decision-points' before which parents should address various issues with their teen and pre-teen children. "Reality Gap" promises to be a go-to book on this vital topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I have read numerous books on this topic so I did skip some of the sections that seemed a bit redundant, but it is still a great read for those who want to see just how much of a gap there is between what teens know/do and what their parents think is going on. The books gives lots of examples on a variety of topics and is written well for those of any educational background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents be prepared
I have purchased all kinds of books on parenting, most recently on the teen years. This is the first book that I am having a hard time putting down.It is surprising how young kids are today when they are getting into alcohol, sex, drugs, etc.I thought that I was pretty on top of these things - boy was this book an eye opener. It has been helpful in facilitating some good dialogue with my teenage son and preteen son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Startling, While Also Encouraging and Useful
Reality Gap gives the parents of teens important information and insight.Foremost, Reality Gap provides a window into what teens are up to these days.Wallace delivers compelling research data from the field combined with personal accounts. The resulting landscape of behavior described in Reality Gap will be of great interest to any parent, regardless of their individual views on drinking or sex.

Few parents will fail to pause when reading about personal cases of teens who wished that they had talked with their parents before making choices they now regret.Peer pressure to drink early, to become sexually active - the list goes on.Without lecturing, Wallace's accounts remind us of the associated consequences whether it is the onset of lifelong battles with addiction or the regrettable occurrences of sexual diseases such as herpes.

Wallace's message is that parents can help their children through the teen years.Reality Gap provides parents with tools for approaching these issues and Wallace's encouraging message is that parents can help their children make better, and safer, decisions if they talk with them - and do so early.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Educators
This book offers a critical insight into the discrepencies between what parents think their teens are doing and what they are, in actuality, doing. Teens speak freely to Wallace, revealing what are the most pressing issues facing teens today. The book offers helpful strategies and tips for parents, coaches, educators and anyone who works with teens on a regular basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From prostitute to Pentecost
I read this book so many times as a young adult. I wanted to be Carmen. I fantasized that I became a prostitute and a drug addict and then Mr Right came along and introduced me to Jesus. Actually, I only read the ending once. I kept going over the sexier parts earlier in the book. It's amazing how salacious these Christian books can be in an understated way. I guess my imagination filled in the blanks.

I went on to read other books by Benton...they tended to be Cinderella-type stories, but none were as good as Carmen.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
This book was very good. I personally loved it. It has real life events that is inspiring and helpful. Carmen takes several wrong turns in her journey through life but it all works out in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked it!
I really recommend this book to anyone, but especially to teens.I have read it 3 times! This book is really an eye opener about drugs and about Christ.I would really like to read more books like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was a really great book.
I never finished the book but I got through most of it to where she went back to Bud for some heroine after she got into the fight with that girl. But I really liked what I read and I would like to buy it but I don't knowwhere to find it. It really opened my eyes. I think every teenager shouldread it. ... Read more
