Product Description

The telegraph and the telephone were the first electrical communications networks to become hallmarks of modernity. Yet they were not initially expected to achieve universal accessibility. In this pioneering history of their evolution, Richard R. John demonstrates how access to these networks was determined not only by technological imperatives and economic incentives but also by political decision making at the federal, state, and municipal levels. In the decades between the Civil War and the First World War, Western Union and the Bell System emerged as the dominant providers for the telegraph and telephone. Both operated networks that were products not only of technology and economics but also of a distinctive political economy. Western Union arose in an antimonopolistic political economy that glorified equal rights and vilified special privilege. The Bell System flourished in a progressive political economy that idealized public utility and disparaged unnecessary waste.

The popularization of the telegraph and the telephone was opposed by business lobbies that were intent on perpetuating specialty services. In fact, it wasn't until 1900 that the civic ideal of mass access trumped the elitist ideal of exclusivity in shaping the commercialization of the telephone. The telegraph did not become widely accessible until 1910, sixty-five years after the first fee-for-service telegraph line opened in 1845.

Network Nation places the history of telecommunications within the broader context of American politics, business, and discourse. This engrossing and provocative book persuades us of the critical role of political economy in the development of new technologies and their implementation.

This book, based on new archives, presents a wealth of new information on Western Union and Bell.An invaluable resource. In particular, possibly the most useful book on Western Union yet published. The Bell sections present new information that threatens many of the existing theories of why AT&T came to rule American telecommunications as a private regulated monopoly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding
This is truly the best overall book I have read on the industry. The technical material is unsurpassed! Great job to the authors!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The new reference in Telecommunications
CISCO this time it publishes a book from the most basic thing analyzing the digital analogical conversion and the digital conversion to analogical in a concrete way.
Excellent the content of ISDN and ATM.
Although the term Telecommunications is generally associated to the telephony, maybe the book suffers of covering the Telephony IP. The book invites to publish a more advanced edition where it covers aspects of digital coding and digital criptography, SSL and SET; however the book is excellent to take it like fundamental reference in the telecommunications.
What should be established, is the necessity to create a standard or pattern among the topics that it should cover a book of telecommunications and CISCO guessed right in this point.
Other topics that they deserve attention in the book they are the cutleries for the protocol Frame Relay and the technology DSL.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well done reference manual.
Every time the name Cisco comes up in technical certification talk most people automatically think routers and switches but the company has a whole lot more including telecommunications.

In this book you'll find the most detailed explanation of the telecommunications I have seen thus far. The authors are extremely knowledgeable in this subject matter and the end result is this 600 plus page reference manual, that would be a must have for anyone who is working with data communication or high end networks.

Their breakdown of analog to digital conversion is well organized and technically accurate. I also was impressed by the amount of information included on the T, E and R carriers. Also included is discussion about ISDN, both BRI and PRI, frame relay, ATM, DSL, CABLE, SONET and for the first time I have ever seen SMDS.

Throughout the entire text you'll find helpful hints and tips, screen shots of actual routers or other equipment as well as a number of diagrams and figures, which give a visual aide to learning. The material is written to a higher level of understanding and you need to understand certain concepts before proceeding, but overall just about anyone in the industry will be able to benefit from this book.

Finally I found this book to be a useful add-on to study for several exams, some outside of the Cisco arena, including Network+, CCNA, CCDA, Server+ and Security+. Cisco Press is a proven leader in the high end networking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete reference ever
This book is incredible. It has all the information you could hope for on subjects rarely found in the same place. Everything is up-to-date and highly accurate. Technologies like Analog, T1/E1, T3/E3, SS7, Frame Relay, DSL, ISDN, ATM, Cable, SMDS, and SONET come to life in an easy-to-understand fashion. After reading this book with its chapter skill checks, you could easily pass for a guru on the subject. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Who wrote this book, Casson or Jones?
Compare the this book with "The History Of The Telephone" BY HERBERT N. CASSON Published: 1910

There are entire sentences and in some cases paragraphs that appear in both books. It looks as though Mr. Jones is taking credit for someone else's writing.

It makes me question the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Reference and Strategic Masterpiece
I enjoyed Mr. Jones' latest book on Telecommunications. The book does a good job at cover everything from the basics to formulating a strategy to effectively compete in the marketplace. Billing, Customer Care, Disaster Recover, Customer Resources Management, Product Management, Account Management, Billing Events. Very Comprehensive. One of the better books on my bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Telecom Books on the market
I've read them all! From the books that explain the telecom network to the intro books showing how to connect a telecom circuit. Their are literally hundreds of these books out there on this subject. But, I finally ran across a book that explained the business and not just the network. The book started out by doing a good intro into telecom priciples and history. Then it went full boar and explained billing, customer care, disaster recovery, people management and then the network. Everything from A - Z.As a telecom architect I can appreciate the keen insights to the industry expressed in this book. It has helped me a great deal in my job as a telecom professional. Terrific guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Business Book
I wish this book had more info on the network. But the business and management information is unsurpassed.Good book in this respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Influential and Informative for Telecom Strategies
As one of the most influential books on telecom on the market, this book introduced me to the principles and practices of managing the telecommunications function within the modern enterprise. The book provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of managing modern business telecommunication resources, particularly as they relate to information technology and management of network resources. This book examines telecommunications from three different perspectives: the manager, the resource, and the implementer. It covers business strategies and stresses the importance of business ethics and ethical descision making. Something which I agree must be enforced from the top down in an organization.Leaders must be ethical in their decision making and not digress into chasing personal agendas vs. meeting the needs of the telecom business. Mr. Jones accurately portrays this concept in his book. If ethical leaders are not placed into the organizational infrastructure, utimately, the bottom line of an organization will be affected. True ethics is a relative term these days. But inappropriate conduct by someone in a leadership position can affect an organizations core. I agree with this concept whole heartedly. Mr.Jones has become a pioneer in this wonderful field. As a leader aspiring to do great things, his teachings have continued to help me in my own career. The information on billing, customer care, OSS, BSS, and telecom architecture is very informative. Also, the strategic concepts of planning provided some good insights as to the evolution of a integrated tehnological infrastructure. Excellent book!! ... Read more

It was a good desicion. The book was as the seller's advice on the web page. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INTERMEDIATE TELECOMMUNICATIONS BOOK
Chances are that you already have this book in your IT library. But, you probably don't have the 2nd edition of the book. Author Roger L. Freeman has done an outstanding job of presenting telecommunications as the world's must lucrative industry.

Freeman begins by showing you--the telecommunication novice, some very basic elements of telecommunications. Next, the author becomes more definitive in several key areas like the quality of service and telecommunications impairments. Then, he provides the reader with a firm foundation of the analog voice channel. Freeman continues by reminding the reader that there are two quite different PCM standards. In addition, the author next concentrates on the network design of the PSTN, how it is structured and why. He also introduces the essential aspects for the design of long-distance links. Freeman next continues with information coding or how you can express your alphabet and numeric symbols electrically without ambiguity. Next, the author confines the reader to various data networks that may be employed in government and industry. He then covers two types of WANs: TCP/IP protocol family; and, frame relay and some of its variants. Freeman then provides the reader with a clear understanding of how a TV works, as well as, describe how television is transmitted and distributed over long distances. Then, the author describes conventional CATV, and the concept of supertrunks including HFC (hybrid fiber coax) systems. Next, he provides a brief overview of both SONET and SDH standards. Finally, Freeman finishes up by treating network management as a whole consisting of its multimedia parts: voice, image, and data, which includes facsimile, telemetry, and CAD/CAM.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job crafting the book with the newcomer in mind. At the end of the day, you'll know whether you'll be gong back to basics or advance to the future of telecommunications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
This book is completely accurate, thorough, and readable. I keep it on my desk as a reference, and find it invaluable. I know the price is steep, but it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable AND Technically Accurate
As an instructor it's great to find a book that is technically sound yet readable by non-engineers!So many so called readable books are shot full of technical holes and errors, but not this one.Yes, I know there is a lot of techie talk, but it is readable and the equations require onlysimple high school algebra. After you finish reading this book you won'tmake rookie mistakes. It's a book you can bet your job on!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start
With telecommunications growth as it is, the arena is now filled with uninformed and misinformed people trying to sell their solution. With a copy of "Fundamentals of Telecommunications" on the shelf eventhe novice can look up advanced topics and begin to comprehend thecomplexities involved in telecommunications engineering.

Mr. Freeman isable to take the real language of physics (let's face it, mathematics andphysics are what rules telecom) and put those concepts into English, although it is technical English.

Just as I was led years ago to aFreeman book by a much admired engineering professor, I recommend this bookas a "must have" to my introductory telecom students. ... Read more

Hardbound. The last two decades have seen exceptionally fast rates of change in every aspect of the telecommunications industry. These include major technology changes and the convergence of the broadcasting, information technology and telecommunications industries. The earlier view of telecommunications as a natural monopoly has now given way to one in which almost all parts are susceptible to some form of competition. Simultaneously, market structure has changed through the replacement of the former monopolistic, vertically integrated telephone companies by a variety of competing firms. These developments have been accompanied by major legislative and regulatory developments, including the passing in the United States of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the introduction of a large number of new laws and regulations in Europe and elsewhere. The same changes have seen a massive expansion of independent regulatory agencies. This volume provides det ... Read more

Product Description
Telemedicine - the use of information and telecommunications technologies to provide and support health care when distance separates the participants - is receiving increasing attention not only in remote areas where health care access is troublesome but also in urban and suburban locations. Yet, the benefits and costs of this blend of medicine and digital technologies must be better demonstrated before today's cautious decisionmakers invest significant funds in its development. "Telemedicine" presents a framework for evaluating patient care applications of telemedicine. The book identifies managerial, technical, policy, legal, and human factors that must be taken into account in evaluating a telemedicine program. The committee reviews previous efforts to establish evaluation frameworks and reports on results from several completed studies of image transmission, consulting from remote locations, and other telemedicine programs. 5-0 out of 5 stars A rare hybrid of disciplines
This book is a rare hybrid of policy, business, and technology perspectives on how to derive value from any service whcihcan be supported or delivered by information and communications technologies. Written by medical and health policy practitioners, who will remain by far the predominant audience for such a book, it is nonetheless also of more general interest to anyone who has to develop and articulate the multiple perspectives needed to succesfully design and implement large-scale IT applications dependent on telecommunications infrastructure. ... Product Description
From the reviews of the Second Edition . "The book stresses how systems operate and the rationale behind their design, rather than presenting rigorous analytical formulations . [It provides] the practicality and breadth essential to mastering the concepts of modern communications systems." -Telecommunication Journal In this expanded new edition of his bestselling book, telephony expert John Bellamy continues to provide telecommunications engineers with practical, comprehensive coverage of all aspects of digital telephone systems, while addressing the rapid changes the field has seen in recent years. Bellamy discusses the near-complete conversion to digital technology in telephone networks worldwide, examines both existing and emerging technologies, and explores the intricacies of carrying voice over data networks as well as the use of telephone networks for carrying data for Internet access. He emphasizes system design, implementation, and application, but also correlates the practice to communications theory. With 30 percent new material, Digital Telephony, Third Edition features:
* Clear explanations on how to overcome problems associated with the replacement of old analog technology with new digital technology

4-0 out of 5 stars Good history, examples iffy
Text required for a class... author does good job presenting history of telecom, but takes liberties with many of the examples, deriving answers with concepts not presented or explained in the materials.Plus, working the supplied answers to example problems backwards (because my answers didn't match the author's), I've come across two examples I believe the author made a fundamental error, to-which the teacher says, "yeah, I guess you could do it either way."

Though, even with the liberties, the majority of the text is very readable and comprehendible. It's actually not a bad book to read, even if there wasn't a class-requirement to do so.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info but poorly written.
I am taking a Master's class in Telecom that is using this book. There is a lot of good information in this book. But it is a tough read. The biggest problem is the author's writing style.I wish he would have taken a tech writing class. If he had, he would have learned that simpler is better. The material is complicated enough.Write the way you speak.

Page 13 for example."In general tems the equipment assoicated with any particular switching machine can be categorized as providing one of the following functions..(lists the three functions of a switch)"

What he is trying to say is: "A switch performs 3 basic functions..."

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental to the Disipline
This book is a top notch treastie on the fundamentals of digital telephony. This books offers an excellent high level overview of the history of the telephony network and the migration to a nearly all digital network including detailed coverage of all aspects and issues of the modern digital systems. As you advance through the chapters of the book it covers each topic is a well balanced amount of detail while providing insight into not only "how", by "why".

The book is very well referenced and researched and can serve as a 'root node' for further investigation on nearly any digital telephony related topic. While the book is not particularly light reading, it is extremely well written and I would highly recommend it to both beginngers and experts alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of the telephone network
I must admit up front that I'm a long time fan of Dr. Bellamy's book"Digital Telephony" having extensively used the second edition. That edition still sits on my shelf, filled with yellow highlights andstick-on tabs with notes indicating certain areas of the book.I hadreviewed that edition with praise, only mentioning that the book needed anupdate. When the third edition was released, I immediately bought a copy.

There just isn't another book (at least none I've found) that explainshow the telephone network "works".The book covers everything, from speech coding, to modulation, to switching, and more.If your workrequires that you have an understanding of the network, this is the bookfor you.

The third edition continues to provide this broad view of thepublic network, adding or expanding coverage of newer areas such as ATM andoptical communications.

I highly recommend this book to allcommunications engineers and network professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about communications
I teach communications concepts and have found this book to be the single most valuable book in my pursuit ofknowledge.Every subject I've needed more information on is covered. Most subjects are explained with a goodunderstanding of communications and concepts assumed by the author...astrong math background would also be helpful. All in all I have yet tofind a better all around book that encompasses the communications field aswell as Digital Telephony does. ...
