Editorial Review Product Description The telegraph and the telephone were the first electrical communications networks to become hallmarks of modernity. Yet they were not initially expected to achieve universal accessibility. In this pioneering history of their evolution, Richard R. John demonstrates how access to these networks was determined not only by technological imperatives and economic incentives but also by political decision making at the federal, state, and municipal levels. In the decades between the Civil War and the First World War, Western Union and the Bell System emerged as the dominant providers for the telegraph and telephone. Both operated networks that were products not only of technology and economics but also of a distinctive political economy. Western Union arose in an antimonopolistic political economy that glorified equal rights and vilified special privilege. The Bell System flourished in a progressive political economy that idealized public utility and disparaged unnecessary waste. The popularization of the telegraph and the telephone was opposed by business lobbies that were intent on perpetuating specialty services. In fact, it wasn't until 1900 that the civic ideal of mass access trumped the elitist ideal of exclusivity in shaping the commercialization of the telephone. The telegraph did not become widely accessible until 1910, sixty-five years after the first fee-for-service telegraph line opened in 1845. Network Nation places the history of telecommunications within the broader context of American politics, business, and discourse. This engrossing and provocative book persuades us of the critical role of political economy in the development of new technologies and their implementation. Customer Reviews (1)

Absolutely Outstanding
The new reference in Telecommunications
A very well done reference manual.
In this book you'll find the most detailed explanation of the telecommunications I have seen thus far. The authors are extremely knowledgeable in this subject matter and the end result is this 600 plus page reference manual, that would be a must have for anyone who is working with data communication or high end networks.
Their breakdown of analog to digital conversion is well organized and technically accurate. I also was impressed by the amount of information included on the T, E and R carriers. Also included is discussion about ISDN, both BRI and PRI, frame relay, ATM, DSL, CABLE, SONET and for the first time I have ever seen SMDS.
Throughout the entire text you'll find helpful hints and tips, screen shots of actual routers or other equipment as well as a number of diagrams and figures, which give a visual aide to learning. The material is written to a higher level of understanding and you need to understand certain concepts before proceeding, but overall just about anyone in the industry will be able to benefit from this book.
Finally I found this book to be a useful add-on to study for several exams, some outside of the Cisco arena, including Network+, CCNA, CCDA, Server+ and Security+. Cisco Press is a proven leader in the high end networking.

Good choice
EXCELLENT INTERMEDIATE TELECOMMUNICATIONS BOOK
Unbelievable
Readable AND Technically Accurate
An excellent place to start Mr. Freeman isable to take the real language of physics (let's face it, mathematics andphysics are what rules telecom) and put those concepts into English, although it is technical English. Just as I was led years ago to aFreeman book by a much admired engineering professor, I recommend this bookas a "must have" to my introductory telecom students. ... Read more |

Good history, examples iffy
Good info but poorly written. Page 13 for example."In general tems the equipment assoicated with any particular switching machine can be categorized as providing one of the following functions..(lists the three functions of a switch)" What he is trying to say is: "A switch performs 3 basic functions..."
Fundamental to the Disipline The book is very well referenced and researched and can serve as a 'root node' for further investigation on nearly any digital telephony related topic. While the book is not particularly light reading, it is extremely well written and I would highly recommend it to both beginngers and experts alike.
The bible of the telephone network There just isn't another book (at least none I've found) that explainshow the telephone network "works".The book covers everything, from speech coding, to modulation, to switching, and more.If your workrequires that you have an understanding of the network, this is the bookfor you. The third edition continues to provide this broad view of thepublic network, adding or expanding coverage of newer areas such as ATM andoptical communications. I highly recommend this book to allcommunications engineers and network professionals.
