2-0 out of 5 stars Not so helpful
I've been a network administrator for 10 years and have bought lots of books. Most of them suffer from an excess of information and a shortage of instruction. This title fits well in that category.I'm not sure who the authors were writing for, but it wasn't me (and what, exactly, is the Microsoft Presentation Hosted Desktop Virtualization Team?).I need to know, in as few words as possible, how to make applications accessible on a terminal server and how to configure and install the TS Gateway and TS Web Access. This book may tell me that somewhere, but I don't have time to search and read to find it.This book is no better and no worse than the typical IT book. But someone needs to write something better than the typical IT book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for terminal services administrators or evaluators
This book was an excellent resource for learning the new terminal services features in Windows 2008.

I have been running terminal services and citrix for a decade now, but had not kept up with the new features in 2008. This book quickly gave me the information I needed to design an environment for a new project one of our teams wanted to implement.

Despite the name, this is more of a book to be read than strictly a reference like many other resource kits. The 500 pages went quickly and proved very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best TS Book I have ever read!
This is the best book I ever read on the Terminal Services Topic! And I have read a lot of them.
Well written, very well organized and very informative. You will find this book to be a great resource whether you are a greenhorn in TS or a hardcore. With over 10 years in the field, being Microsoft TS MVP myself I still found a lot interesting in the book. I love the structure of the book, the notes, the comments and the "Direct from the source" explanations! Highly recommended reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well laid out, excellent breadth of information that is very accesable
This book is a very well laid out and pretty comprehensive compile of all the various items needed to plan, scale, configure and manage a Terminal Services infrastructure. Before this book, most of this material was scattered throughout whitepapers, Knowledge Base articles and in the tribal knowledge of people who work with the product. Thanks to this book, its all provided in one place in a very easy to find manner (especially when you take into account that there is a searchable soft copy of the book on the accompanying CD) This book gives people from the neophyte level to seasoned administrators a easy to use resource to understand and reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best Microsoft Resource Kit I've ever read
My memory of reading various Microsoft Resource Kits mostly consists of dry, highly technical and not very accessible content. I mean a Resource Kit isn't something you read, it's something you refer to and look up facts in.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, it's very accessible, clearly laid out and really covers not only the technical ground but also the business case for each of the additions to TS in Windows Server 2008. Sizing hardware for a terminal server is covered in detail as is the comparison of a 32 bit or 64 bit platforms. Profile management, locking down TS servers and licensing is all covered. New features in TS 2008 are covered in great detail, the Session Broker is explained, TS Gateway and TS Remote Apps are fully taken care of as is Easy Printing.
Interspersed in the regular text are short sections where particular technologies are thoroughly explained by various members of the TS team at Microsoft and they too make interesting reading.

All in all this is a must have book for anyone tasked with running a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services Server or farm.

Customer Reviews (8)

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more emphasis on modeling and historical test cases
Thin-client computing has become very popular in recent years, and this is indeed a surprise if one acknowledges the fact that it is very similar to the main-frame environments of decades past and if one considers the drive toward client-server computing in the 1990's. Advances in computing are usually thought of as a rupture with the past. The incorporation of thin-client computing is in this sense surprising. Clearly there are some advantages in using thin-client computing, at least for relatively small organizations. However, for large organizations it can be problematic, requiring meticulous attention to the administration of the servers and making sure that the client applications have been developed with thin-client environments in mind.

This book gives a helpful overview of thin-client computing using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services. It is clearly written for the administrator, but network design engineers or those who need to understand performance issues in thin-client environments still could read it profitably. Many businesses still insist on centrally managed computing, and 2003 Terminal Services was designed for those that do.

A major issue for large deployments of terminal servers that is glossed over in the book is the cooling requirements for server racks. For businesses that have thousands of clients, this entails a large data-center be constructed to house the server racks. Cooling becomes an expensive proposition, and in fact so critical that many small software companies have arisen in the last few years that offer algorithms, based on computational fluid dynamics, to optimize the air flow in these data centers.

The author correctly observes that testing in terminal server environments before deploying in production is extremely important, and a significant portion of the book is devoted to different ways of testing. He is also aware that those who do not actually do it usually consider testing a "necessary evil". In large terminal server environments it is even more crucial, and the collection of data, the creation of the statistics, the analysis and documentation become tedious but absolutely necessary.

Interestingly though the author does not feel that simulation modeling is of too much value when it comes to understanding the behavior of traffic in terminal server environments. He claims, but does not back this up with explicit calculations, that it is more cost-effective to purchase too many servers than to invest in model development. Modeling, whether discrete simulation modeling or based on relevant mathematics can be expensive sometimes there is no doubt. However, it allows insight into the behavior of devices in production environments, and this insight is frequently superior to what can be obtained using testing or educated guesswork. Interestingly however, the major vendors of discrete simulation software have not expressed any interest in the RDP protocol, this due in part to the difficulty in obtaining the source code for this protocol. Therefore, the development of a simulation model that emulates the data traffic of a user over RDP will have to be done essentially from scratch. The complications due to user behavior, such as mouse events, typing rates, and the caching and queuing mechanisms at the client can be incorporated in such models.

It is clear from reading the book that the author has been involved in large-scale terminal server deployments. His advice is therefore valuable to those readers who are faced with the same. And there are no doubt many readers who, having stood up terminal server environments, will back up the author's statements with gusto. Issues with printing, network latency, caching at the client, and especially load balancing and how it meshes with Session Directory are things that network engineers and administrators are faced with frequently in terminal server environments. The author gives detailed steps on how to avoid or at least handle these issues, this being done through careful planning and foresight, with intuition and `gut feelings' to be completely avoided.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very complex
This book is indeed quite complex and not really geared toward beginners. The reader should have at least a basic to medium knowledge of the topic. By the way, I know that the German version is 100% more complicated and harder to understand than the English, I read both. So if you have a good command of English it might be easier for you to read and understand this book in its translated version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you
First off, this book was bought to help understand and support a Windows 2003 Terminal Server environment.

The good: The first few chapters start off great, presenting a good foundation to learn from.

The bad: I picked up maybe a few pages worth of knowledge that will actually help me maintain a Windows 2003 Terminal Server.

The ugly:Suddenly Ch. 7 (Scripting), turns into a reference guide with no structure to it.After this, the author decides to spend 3 chapters teaching you about Citrix Metaframe XP... why, I have no idea, as the title of the book clearly states Microsoft Windows 2003 Terminal Services.

In the end:If you are trying to decide if using thin clients within your organization is worth it or not, this may be a good book to use.As it covers the 'how it works' concept of using terminal services. Unfortunately, this book doesn't help in making your Terminal Server run as efficiently as possible.About a third of the book is on Citrix Metaframe, which completely misleads the buyer as this is a Microsoft book. How Microsoft allowed the author to include Citrix related content is beyond me.

In the author's defense... this book was translated from german to english, so perhaps the German (original) edition may have been better than this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good approach to design practice
The book was very useful in explaining how to design a terminal server environment and also provided many good tips on managing and integrating with group policies. However, the book is not meant to be a guide on how to configure terminal services. This is a more technical reference guide not targeted towards the beginner.

2-0 out of 5 stars 40 miles wide and 2 inches deep
I have read this book and I have to disagree with the previous reviews. I think that the author has very broad experience with Terminal Services and he demonstrates that very well. But, this book does not have any practical configuration depth.

This book provides a very good overview of the technology, history, and the many features of terminal services. What this book lacks is the important details and steps needed to actually configure Terminal Services. This book has about 5% substance and 95% fluff. If you need step by step instructions for configuring Terminal Services, then this book is not it. ... Read more

Product Description
Windows NT Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrame is a technical reference that details all aspects of planning, installing, administering, and troubleshooting Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrame systems. MetaFrame greatly enhances the usability of NT as a thin-client solution, but the heterogeneous networking issues involved in its integration will be a significant source of information pain. Part I begins with an in-depth look at the technology, and how its relevant to the NT administrator. This material is not an overview, but more preparatory material for real-world administration. Part II goes into the real nuts and bolts of thin client administration, covering such relevant issues as installation, configuration, network connection, management, and application distribution. Part III covers the most difficult issues involving thin client administration. This book addresses the real world issues you face, on a case-by-case basis, with tools and advice on solving them.Amazon.com Review
Despite the heavy pro-Windows and anti-Java biases of authorTed Harwood, Windows NT Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrameproves once again that entries in the New Riders networking bookseries are not to be missed. Both knowledgeable and pragmatic, Harwoodcapably guides you through all aspects of Terminal Server andMetaFrame, from market background to installation to application.

Divided into three parts, not including the appendices, this bookbegins with an overview section. Within the overview, the author drawsthe distinctions and overlaps between thin clients, Windows terminals, and Net PCs and explains the situations in which such solutions makesense. In addition, chapters are devoted to the architecturaldifferences between Terminal Server and Windows NT Server 4 as well asCitrix MetaFrame. These pages are particularly important, as theyoutline the features inherent to the product--such as automated localdevice redirection and the ability to allow non-Windows clients toaccess Terminal Server--and whether or not it is appropriate for yournetwork situation.

Part 2 deals exclusively with installation, configuration, and administration. This section showcases some of thebook's best features, such as real-word tips and top 10 lists. Thelast section of the book delves into implementing real-world solutionsin a Terminal Server/MetaFrame environment. Topics covered includeremote access, incorporating non-Windows clients, load balancing, andapplication publishing. -Sarah L. Roberts-Witt ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book. Highly recommended
I have barely any experience with Citrix before but this book has broughtme from nearly zero knowledge of Citrix to being able to Administer asimple Citrix network.

I took me only 3 days to read this through andabsorb all the information. Very well laid out. Definitely get this book ifyou need basic to intermediate information on Terminal Server /Metaframe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to Windows Terminal Server
A customer was demanding that an application be web enabled for them tostay interested. There was not enough time to recode the application so weturned to Terminal Server. We set the app up on Terminal Services runningon Windows 2000 Advanced Server (RC-1) since that was already running inour test lab.We ran into a few hitches making it work so bought thisbook.Even though this book was written for NT it led us through someconfiguration changes we needed to make to get the app running properly. We satisfied the customer with this work around and everyone involvedbecame fans of this book.

After the project was over I took some time toread through it carefully instead of just looking for solutions.I wasvery pleased that the material is well written and clearly leads the readerto develop a very sound understanding of Terminal Server and the issuesinvolved in managing and securing applications running in this environment.

To me, a book like this one is supposed to take a generallyknowledgeable person from ignorance to basic competence in the specialtyarea.I had accessed applications over terminal services prior to readingthis book but had never managed them. This book quickly gave me theknowledge I needed to feel comfortable administering a Terminal Server.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Thin-client computing newbies and old-hats
As an administrator with several years of Citrix, Terminal server implementations under my belt, I can honestly say this is hands-down the best book on the subject that I've seen. There are some things that aren'tthere, but that's expected, Ted can't do your job for you after all. Iregularly recommend this book to anyone that asks for WTS/Metaframe info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad....
This book isn't too bad. It focuses more on Terminal Server than MetaFrame (but i suppose that is fair enough, as the title is TS). Some of the stuff is very basic like Profiles and Policies, configuring RAS and things likethat which are really just NT fundamentals - however, some of the Policyand Profile stuff is VERY important for Terminal Server. The Login Scriptsection is very good as is the Application Installation and Troubleshootingpart. Overall, well written and quite informative, but leaves you wantingmore...use in conjunction with the MF Admin Guide and the other TerminalServer/MF title.

3-0 out of 5 stars WinFrame
I bought and read this book awhile ago.I took it back for a refund because I found it misleading.I needed a book that focused mainly on Terminal Server and MetaFrame. The title said MetaFrame but the contentseemed to focus on WinFrame, the little bit of content devoted to MetaFramewas lacking the in depth information I was looking for and did not coverversion 1.8.The book was probably good when first published but isgetting outdated. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner-to-intermediate level book
I bought this book with basic knowledge of Terminal Services, but even if I hadn't I would still be very comfortable with it after reading this book. As an MIS manager, my goal was to find a book that would make me knowledgable-enough to explain the technology to my technicians, as well as my customers. This book did the job. After highlighting much of the it, I've turned it over to my staff for in-depth comprehension. I found the book very clear, thorough, and straight-to-the-point - a very quick read. I never give recommendations, but felt it justified here.

I don't agree with the other reiewer. This is a fantastic book that dives-in at the right level if you already know a little about Terminal Server. If you're a begninner, this is not the book for you. If you already know the basics and you want to find real knowledge about TS, then this book is a gem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Goes off into the ozone too quickly.
Promised a "hands on" book, but quickly touches on several very technical variations. Not a good "set it up" book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice and complete introduction book
Hey guys, it is not a book for gurus it is for learners and for beginners. As such this book is completely up-to the task and it is well written and easy to follow. It is never easy task to learn new things and studying UNIX isn't exception. This book is very nicely, didactically organized and facilitates the transition from subject to subject. I used this book and Linux and UNIX for a beginner training suite, 4DVDs + 2CDs includes 4 Unix Academy Certifications ed.2008 and they made the very efficient couple.
You have the smooth consistent info with the book and then you have the workflow with the DVD. This book cover basics but often the basics are the most difficult things. For those people who had never touched UNIX internals of their Apple computer this book will do and it will make good intro into completely different way to do things.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Point
In the vast world of Linux/UNIX, I found it hard to know where to start learning.I figured that since I knew a significant amount about OS X that this book might make for a good beginning level book.I was so right. For someone who knows absolutely nothing about UNIX commands, this book is for you.You will learn the absolute basics and nothing more.Keep that in mind: you will not learn anything beyond the basics. If you're looking for something a little more comprehensive, then look somewhere else. However, if you are looking for a short, basic introduction to the world of UNIX so you can get around, this book is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point for Unix novices
I have recently fallen in love with Macs.I had been a Windows developer for 15 years.Occasionally I have had to poke around on the Solaris command line at work, but I am a Unix newbie. This book does a great job of laying out the basics of Unix for people who have little or no Unix experience. This book does not provide a "quick start".It does not go into excessive depth on Unix. But it does provide fundamental building blocks for expanding one's Unix knowledge. My suggestion to Unix novices: read this little book from cover to cover. Then you'll be able to take advantage of all the free articles and technical documentation that explain how to do the fun, tricky stuff.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unix for people who already know Unix...
Dave Taylor and Brian Jepson, please take a pedagogy pill and call me in the morning...Sheesh, could they have made this any more obtuse?Purchase this book if you have a lot of time on your hands and/or enjoy learning things despite the best efforts of the author. To paraphrase Churchill:"Never have two guys taken so long to explain so little."

2-0 out of 5 stars BRUSH AND BRUSH, YET, NO SHINE!
Unless you are a complete UNIX dummy, there is not much to expect (or benefit) from this book. Its meager 158 pages only succeeded in brushing around the very basics (and simple commands). Apart from its cogent narrations on how best a novice could explore UNIX applications and use command interface, there is little that shine in this book.
Anyone who knows one or two things about UNIX is likely to be disappointed by its inept coverage. Hence, I would advise such person to opt for "Mac OS X for Unix Geeks", which provided a more palatable gist in a chronological order. Versatile enthusiasts, who are interested in advanced explorations, should consider "Mac OS X Unleashed". One of its chapters on Unix-Mac relationships did eclipse anything this book can boast of. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre reference book
All but the first 98 pages is appendix related to specific brands of printer and motherboard.Very little general information on how RS-232 does what it does. I recommend "Serial Port Complete" by Axelson.Iespecially recommend "The RS232 Solution" if you can find it.It is out of print.

Excerpt: NComputing is a desktop virtualization company that manufactures hardware and software to create virtual desktops which enable multiple users to simultaneously share one computer. The companys approach is similar to thin clients but promises better media streaming and audio performance and lower costs. The company supports both Windows and Linux operating systems. The name "NComputing" comes from the mathematical term "n" which stands for an indefinite number (in this case) of additional users sharing a single computer. NComputing, based in Redwood City, CA is a privately held for-profit company with offices in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Korea, Poland, Russia, and the United Kingdom; and resellers around the world. In 2003, Young Song, a former VP at eMachines, met German entrepreneur Klaus Maier (formerly CEO of hydrapark), who had spent more than ten years developing the core software on which NComputing is based. They formed a team to develop the complementary hardware in Russia, while the software was written in Poland. Stephen Dukker, former chairman of eMachines, joined NComputing in January 2006 to lead the company. Dukker introduced NComputing to venture capitalists and technology journalists in September 2006 at DEMOfall 06. By October 2006, NComputing had raised $8 million from Scale Venture Partners (formerly known as BA Venture Partners). In January 2008, the company raised a $28 million series B round of financing, led by Silicon Valley venture capital firm Menlo Ventures with participation from Scale Venture Partners and South Koreas Daehong Technew Corp.
