5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great books on bebop
This is not really a book, but a collection of essays and articles from various contributors. The book centers around the Ross Russell Collection in the University of Texas. Thus a large part of the book deals with Ross Russell and of course Charlie Parker. These parts are highly in depth and well written. However, the other parts of the book talk in depth about several other facets of bebop.
One of my favorite sections is the excellent article on why bebop never flourished as Swing jazz did.
Overall, this is a great book with details and insights offered in few other books.I found this gem of a book deep within my library, and its sad that such a great book is not out in print anymore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Jakes' Children's Book of the Alamo
John Jakes creates a fantastic book of the Alamo.Using the story of Susanna Dickenson, John Jakes tells the story of the Alamo.Susanna was widowed during the fight and held captive by Santa Anna along with her young daughter. After refusing to be sent to Mexico City for her daughter to be raised and cared for by Santa Ana, she was sent back to the white settlements with a message - that if the settlers didn't cooperate and follow Santa Ana's directives, they would end up like the men at the Alamo.A very interesting story and one that moved me quite a bit. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Children
We ordered this book to read with our 7 year old granddaughter before taking her to the Alamo. It was really great. The story of a Mother and Child present at this battle seemed to really connect with her.She talked about the family on the way to our visit. Then while there two things occurred making it all more real.First, she noticed Almeron Dickinson's name on the plaque of men that died at the Alamo.Second, since the Sacristy is now open (which is where the women huddled during the final battle), the audio tape we had rented specifically mentioned Susanna Dickinson, her child and her husband's last quote "if they spare you, save our child".Knowing John Jakes as an author, we were confident that it would be historicallty accurate and it was.We were very pleasantly surprised by the many illustrations as well. I would recommend this book to any parent taking a child to the Alamo or even just wanting them to get an understanding of this part of Texas History, whether they read it themselves or you read it to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susanna of the Alamo
I LOVE THIS BOOK!ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS I HAVE READ TO MY 4TH GRADERS THAT KEEKPS THEIR TOTAL INTEREST.I GAVE THEM A QUIZ AFTERWARDS AND THEY DID PHENOMINAL!THANK YOU FOR CARRYING THIS ITEM!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Alamo hero no one knew
I don't often review books that I sell, via Amazon, but this one is an exception.I found the topic of interest, as I had never heard of Susanna. At first I thought it to be a fictional tale, "Oh Susanna..."
but it's not. It's the story of a real woman who survived the battle of the Alamo, along w/ her young daughter. Her husband, and all the other men from the Alamo were not so fortunate.

With great strength of character, even during her grief, she stood up to Santa Anna refusing his offers of charity. She carried the tale of the Alamo defeat to San Houston. Her message helped to galvanize -- motivate -- the troops to push on towards victory.

Written by John Jakes, this is not a tale for young pre-school aged children. It's definately more of a historical sort of resource for those doing research or interested in that time/era/place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historic value in Susanna of the Alamo
Susanna of the Alamo is an excellent book that enables children to place themselves within a historical event.Susanna of the Alamo focuses on the only survivor of the tragic Alamo fight, Susanna Dickinson and her infantdaughter.THe story istold from her point of view which gives thechildren today the ability to understand the fight as it was unfolding.Iteach 5th graders and every year the book has brouight a tear to an eye anda solemn calm to my room. The children are able to place themselves intheat time period through Jakes work and not only understand what the Texassettlers felt but how they felt also.It is an excellent book with whichto teach about the Alamo- I couldn't do it without it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good read
I enjoyed this book very much, as I did the rest of the Texas series by Fern Michaels.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a romance
This is a series, reminds me of the series Dallas.A Soap Opera, not a romance novel.

1-0 out of 5 stars full of sh*****t
I picked up a copy from the library as the title sounded interesting.

But it turned out to be an extremely boring read. My main complaint is that it's very hard to relate to the settings of the story and even harder to identify with any of the characters. Maybe a real estate mogul or oil magnate can, but probably not a regular joe like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fern does it again!
Fern Michaels does it again. I loved this book in the series. The Texas series is definitely a must read for all Fern Michaels fans. Once you start reading, you can't put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I bought this book before a trip to the Hill Country this past spring. One of the author's suggestions, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip, was to drive the Willow City Loop - we ended up driving it twice because it was so beautiful. We would have never found it without this book, and I've bought several other books similar to this one since our trip and not one of them mentions it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource to discovering Texas
I found this book on a roadtrip to West Texas and it became an indespensible resource for discovering Texas. Not only did we find many side trips while in the Permian Basin of West Texas, it opened a new window into the Hill Country around Austin, we visited many places that we would never have known existed.A companion book on was an indespensible part of a recent road trip I took with my kids through Wyoming. You cannot say you truly know a place unless you own one of these books for the state in which you live. The books open a whole new world of weekend excursions to places and things odd, quirky, historic and wonderful.I highly recommend any in this series. ...
