You won't find this book on a school library shelf--it's pure teenage anarchy. While many homeschooling authors hem and haw that learning at home isn't for everyone, this manifesto practically tells kids they're losers if they do otherwise. With the exception of a forwarding note to parents, this book is written entirely for teenagers, and the first 75 pages explain why school is a waste of time. Grace Llewellyn insists that people learn better when they are self-motivated and not confined by school walls. Instead of homeschooling, which connotes setting up a school at home, Llewellyn prefers "unschooling," a learning method with no structure or formal curriculum. There are tips here you won't hear from a school guidance counselor. Llewellyn urges kids to take a vacation--at least for a week--after quitting school to purge its influence. "Throw darts at a picture of your school" or "Make a bonfire of old worksheets," she advises. She spends an entire chapter on the gentle art of persuading parents that this is a good idea. Then she gets serious. Llewellyn urges teens to turn off the TV, get outside, and turn to their local libraries, museums, the Internet, and other resources for information. She devotes many chapters to books and suggestions for teaching yourself science, math, social sciences, English, foreign languages, and the arts. She also includes advice on jobs and getting into college, assuring teens that, contrary to what they've been told in school, they won't be flipping burgers for the rest of their days if they drop out.

Llewellyn is a former middle-school English teacher, and she knows her audience well. Her formula for making the transition from traditional school to unschooling is accompanied by quotes on freedom and free thought from radical thinkers such as Steve Biko and Ralph Waldo Emerson. And Llewellyn is not above using slang. She capitalizes words to add emphasis, as in the "Mainstream American Suburbia-Think" she blames most schools for perpetuating. Some of her attempts to appeal to young minds ring a bit corny. She weaves through several chapters an allegory about a baby whose enthusiasm is squashed by a sterile, unnatural environment, and tells readers to "learn to be a human bean and not a mashed potato." Best $20 I ever spent!
I am only on Chapter 3 and am riveted! My 14 year old has always been homeschooled and tried out public school for the first time as a new 9th grader 6 weeks ago. He just withdrew for the same exact facts about public schools stated in this book. It is soooo true. Anyone who debates this book, is just dead wrong. This book is right on the money. The worst, most "unaccomplished" unschool day is better than the most productive public school day. I am so glad my son was able to experience this for himself. He actually lived it and can attest to the validity of this book. Why is it such a hard concept for people to wrap their head around? School is a HUGE WASTE OF TIME!!! It does more damage than good! You wont be stupid if you quit school but you wont be as smart if you DON'T quit!!

Brilliant!!
I just read this book and I LOVE IT! I want my kids to read it! Their ages are: 12, 10 and 9.
I think Miss Llewellyn is brilliant and she understands her own limits. I think she understands that we can't take our freedom for granted. I think she IS encouraging us to be thankful for our 'hard fought freedom' in the US and encourage our kids to use it and begin to think beyond the limited "school" mentality and go after a life of meaning and passion!! I wish I had read this as a teenager or even before. I think my parents would've considered it if they had only known there was an alternative to the traditional public/private education. I think our kids are capable of so much more than we give them credit for!
Thanks Grace Llewellyn, (John Taylor Gatto, Sandra Dodd, John Holt and many others for their input as authors) for writing this book years ago. It's still very relevant. It's just taking a while for others to catch on!

If you are a teen, run to buy this book!
I wish I had read this book when I was fifteen, but alas it hadn't been published yet. I highly recommend this book for any teen who questions why they are stuck in a classroom all day learning--what? If you are at all questioning why you must go to high school and/or what you are learning and why, by all means get your hands on this practical, informative and easy to read manual. My copy is very dog eared from so many teens asking to borrow it!

Teenage Liberation Handbook
The Teenage Liberation Handbook is great for people considering home schooling.It's very persuasive about the benefits of home schooling versus institutional schooling - and great for converting those who don't believe in home schooling.It's really about how to make the leap out of school.Once you've already made the leap, you probably don't need this book so much, but keep it to lend to the skeptics.

Buy one for every kid you know
I'm a former teacher in both public and private schools, the doting father of a teenager, a multi-term school board member, and a graduate of an "excellent" urban high school who went on to what some consider the top college in the country and two masters programs after that...so don't accuse me of bearing some grudge against the system for past failures or toying with the future of others' kids.If anything, I know just a tad too much about schools---even "good" schools---from continuing personal experience, and I would buy this book in a second out of my own pocket for any teen in my district who promised to read it.I've read most of it more than once myself, kept returning to it as a reference, given away copies, and recommended it publicly just yesterday to a roomful of juniors at my high school...thus my return here to check again its availability and price.

If you are a kid who can't think for yourself, don't waste your money.Stay where you are.You and your school deserve each other, and I wish you a happy life.

If you are a parent who thinks it risky giving this to your child, I would suspect you have a short, selective memory and a fear of conflict.Maybe you won't agree with everything in here, but what the hell do you risk to lose opening up an honest discussion with your kid?It might be a life changing event for both of you.Buy two of them so you can both read it at the same time and mark up your own copies.Maybe both of you will agree it's not for you, but you'll be much closer for opening the door, and school will then be more positive for being a considered choice rather than a forced obligation. ...
