Theatre History
Very good condition, except some minor highlighting in one section, but not invasive to reading

Beware false idols.
Some theatre students and teachers take this book for a theatre history bible of sorts.Unfortunately, this results in readers switching off their critical thinking skills and accepting Dr. Brockett's values and opinions as facts.The scholar makes history and Brockett's history privileges debated concepts such as ritual-origin theory and drastically undervalues accomplishments of othered groups such as 17th century English actresses.(They get a whopping two sentences!)While this book is good for pedestrian and generalized descriptions of major figures and events (from a 20th century perspective), it is far from exhaustive.Alternative historical theories are not given much thought and the author presents opinion and theory as empirical fact regularly throughout the text.

A Solid and Comprehensive Bargain
Does any work fill all of the needs we might wish to find?I doubt it; but a few typographical errors aside, I have decided to use Mr. Kendrick's work as a text for first-time students in Musical Theatre.Hooray that we went back to the Greeks and acknowledged both that the format did nopt start in America and also that he does not hold THE BLACK CROOK as a sudden miracle post Civil War.And even the renowned Mr. Brockett willingly admits that no book can hold all the various ranges that can be covered in theatre history; thankfully works have been photoed, filmed, taped and, yes, even U-Tubed so that a non-picture book can be sucessfully supplemented.The book works well, maybe not for the graduate student in theatre, but for a comprehensive view of the Maerican Musical Theatre.

An Indispensible Resource - and a Great Read!
I couldn't agree more with K Carlson - this book is a great read.At any age.

I know lots of students - including students of the theatre - and they've shown me that JA Kawasky's declaration of the death of reading is premature.While Kenrick's book does not boast a CD, it combines scholarship with great readability, and is great fun, besides.(Compare R Knapp's two books, The American Musical Theatre and the Performance of Personal Identity; ... and the Formation of National Identity - which DO have CDs, but are pedantic and unreadable).

Highly recommended.

An Indispensable Guide For Those Who Love Musicals!
I've been hooked on musicals since I saw my first one on Broadway back in the 1960's.It's obvious that John Kenrick is even more so.His knowledge and expertise on this art form clearly comes through in his conversational writing style.The who, when, where, what, why and how of the various musicals through the ages are truly informational gems.This is a great book that allows the reader to peek behind the curtain while studying musical theatre's evolution. It is a great source book for those of us who aren't in musical theatre and wish to test our knowledge of what we have seen or know; as well as to track down totally unfamiliar musicals and discover what's been missed. I always thought of the musical as having come into existence in the last 100 or so years. Boy was I wrong!"Musical Theatre-A History" is an excellent read and reference!

A Little Too Overblown
Okay so there's a thousand books on the history of musicals out there and this is basically the same thing you'll learn there except it takes you back to anicent Greek theater. Most of the later part of the book is taken off the author's website and the biblography is a little too much.
I think he is a little hard on recent musicals but I am glad that he loathed Ben Brantley's horrible NY Times article proclaiming the "death"
of musicals.

Good for the teacher/prof.
The author was unpleased with my initial review so I removed it.However, I do hope this book finds its way on to all teachers/professors desks who teach the history of the American Musical.The book however is probably unusable for today's college students as it is almost all ink...(and sadly, most students can't read...).There are few pictures, due to budget, publisher and time constraints, so I was told, and there is not a DVD or CD which probably would have made this cost prohibitive.The website of Mr. Kenrick's, [...], remains marvelous and user friendly for the computer generation of students. ... A Lot of Info in A Small Space
Perhaps this is a biased view of this book, having used it as a textbook in a College-Level Theatre course, but I fount that his book tries too hard to cram every little bit of information into the smallest amount of space possible, which makes it difficult to understand and/or retain what you have read. Great Book That Falls Apart a Little at the End
This is an excellent book that is interesting, very well organized and extremely well written.

Then World War II ends and the book fails to remain interesting or well organized.Basically it falls apart.I believe that what happened is that without historical concensus to determine what is important and less important, the book bogs down as it delivers raw facts about present day theater without a framework or context to organize the message.

Never the less, I am keeping the book at 5 stars because if you are looking to read a book on Theater History, this is the one to get.It's a first class read through WWII.

Eh... not the greatest
True, this book is full of great information. If that's your only basis for analysis, then fine, it's good.

But it tries to be so politically correct that at some points it can't speak at all. Many of the paragraphs are phrased quite redundantly, + there are entire sections of expository text that are a waste of time.

I'm just glad I had a good professor to teach me this, or I would have absolutely hated this book.

A student's review
An amazing theatre textbook. It covered a wide range and was set up chronologically rather than by culture, which made more sense to me than any other theatre history text I've used. It also covered cultures and types of theatre that I had never heard of before, rather than focusing on Western cultures. The writing style was approachable and held my interest easily. There weremany photos, drawings, and diagrams, which all served to augment the reading.

I highly recommend it. Especially because it is an entertaining textbook while still being vastly informative.

REALLY GOOD WORLD THEATRE TEXT
I use this book for Theatre Pedagogy at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. (grad).While it is required reading for the semester, this text is different than all the other synchronic histories out there, and takes the diachronic viewpoint of theatrical performance that occurred in various parts of the world in particular times.

Love this book. Using it as a reference has saved me on more than one occasion.

A great book for painters
Scenic Art for the Theatre is a book you should own if:

1) You are interested in the history of scenic art.
2) You are a designer who needs to understand painting better.
3) Are interested in a career painting scenery, especially drops.
4) Most of all if you are a designer who needs to "paint their own stuff."

Scenic Art for the Theatre is by far the best painting book on the market. Susan Crabtree is a fabulous painter with years of experience, and also a GREAT teacher. I was very fortunate to take a class of hers at Cobalt studios, and even after designing and painting scenery for 25 years, she definitely improved my knowledge base.

An Excellent Beginning
I've decided to use this book as my primary text for a scenic painting course I'm teaching.The book is chock full of interviews with professionals, has a very nice section on the history of scenic painting, and really goes into depth in explaining why some things are done, why other things are not, and why sometimes you have to make it up.The authors go out of their way to make sure the reader understands the complicated relationship between the designer and the painter, and how the paint shop fits in to the larger context of producing a show.The examples and samples are all in color, and some of them are quite breathtaking.If you have a student thinking seriously about going into scenic design or scenic painting, you should make sure this book finds its way into their hands. ... I use this for all my theatre history classes
This is a terrific textbook.It has accurate information, good photos and illustrations, is well organized, and is easy to read.It is not the most detailed theatre history text out there, but, as a college professor who has read a great many of those texts, I find this by far the most effective tool for teaching undergraduate students about theatre.

It's all here - slavery to european, amateur to professional
Many of us take for granted the ability to go out on the town and enjoy a play about African Americans. Such plays as A Raisin in the Sun, Dream Girls, and The Piano Lesson have found their way into the hearts of many a theater goer and into the cultural makeup of this country.However, the making of these plays would not have been possible if not for the struggle and sacrifices of many theatrical pioneers. A History of African American Theatre by Errol G. Hill and James V. Hatch is an extensive anthology of all types of African American theatre that gives a wonderful historical perspective that we can use to interpret some of what we see today.The book includes information on minstrels, vaudeville, cabaret acts, musicals, and opera.It's the complete historical reference for the African American theatre lover.

Look no further for a composite musical theater history
Reading this book has pointed me to multiple excellent shows I wouldn't have been aware of otherwise. It is an information-packed read and yet a light and entertaining one. I espcially admire the commitment to presenting shows that were important shows even if they didn't do well on Broadway or even play on Broadway. For even the most seasoned theater folks, some chapter in this book (nicely organized by decade, by the way) will open up your world and show you something you didn't know.

Diaappointing
If you are looking for an objective history of American musical theater this is not the book for you in my humble opinion. The author averages about 10 pages per decade for the period from 1900 through 1960 & 20+ pages per decade thereafter. Further, the author displays a clear Liberal bias which has become all too common among Harvard faculty & graduates since the end of WWII. As a result of that bias he devotes far greater attention to works he considers to be politically correct than he does to most other shows. All in all, I believe this book will & probably does have very limited appeal.

Straightforward, succint, interesting, and relevent
I'm not going to wax poetic but this is the PERFECT textbook for my high school musical theatre class.It is written at a level that is accessible to students but doesn't pander.It is well researched and informative but still includes occasional editorial comments that remind us that the author is human and really does have a personality.I appreciate the fact that the book is relatively short and will not overwhelm someone who just picks it up and wants to travel chronologically through the history of the American musical.Obviously, Miller's book is not exhaustive and he admits this up front.He doesn't waste time talking about musicals that weren't socially or theatrically important or influential (The Sound of Music) but also touches on a few groundbreaking but relatively underrated shows like Little Johnny Jones.The best thing about this book is that Miller takes a decade like the 1940s (arguably one of the most rich and influential periods in musical theatre) and gives us the basics in fifteen pages.But he hits ALL the high points.That book is such a great jumping off point for so many great discussions because Miller really does a good job showing the *development* of musical theatre and its connectivity to their contemporaneous social and political conditions.Overall, this is just a refreshing and sophisticated rendering of musical theatre that doesn't get bogged down in trivialities or tangents.Miller keeps moving and consequently, keeps us looking forward.THANK YOU!

My ONLY two complaints... Miller considers Porgy and Bess an opera and therefore omits it entirely.Also, I wish there was a hardcover edition.... as a textbook, the paperbacks will not stand up well to the abuse of high school students :)

Good overview
A book like this has been long waited for. There is much here that is new to me and the fact that Irish theatre has such long roots is interesting. This is a good overview on Irish theatre but it is heavy at times and difficult to read. That is why I give it four stars and not five. ... Read more
