My health insurance provider does not cover the thousands of dollars of TMJ therapy my doctor recommended. This book gave me the background necessary to improve my pain symptoms on my own, understand my condition more fully and be more empowered and knowledgeable about the medical care I choose to pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have TMJ Disorder, I highly recommend this book
I bought this book several years ago while I was in the midst of a terrible bout with jaw pain.During this time, I searched the Internet for help and stumbled across the story of a woman who claimed that following the advice in this book cured her of TMJ disorder.

Based on this story, I bought the book and faithfully followed a series of jaw exercises and relaxation techniques outlined in the book.Within a few weeks of doing these exercises and techniques, my jaw quit hurting.Headaches I'd been getting also went away.

So, this book comes from my highest recommendation.

3-0 out of 5 stars nice book
simple but the same time quite explanatory of the mind-boggling field of occlusion and TMJ principles in general

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook Ever
I am so glad I bought Functional Occlusion! Dr. Dawson takes a very dry subject and makes it fascinating. Each chapter is brief so the reader can finish the section and absorb it thoroughly before moving on. Written principles are simplified with diagrams and photographs. It contains all of the nuts and bolts with no fluff. This one scores "100".

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost like being at the Dawson Academy
I've attended over 130 hours of continuing education classes at the Dawson Academy. And, essentially, this book is the teachings of the core concepts of the Dawson philosophy. If you can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars like I did attending his center, then this book comes as a close second. The golden nugget of the dawson philosophy is that form follows function. The book is well illustrated with copious amounts of color photos, diagrams and illustrations. I understand that Dr. Dawson did some of the illustrations himself which are fair. I guess I can be a little picky since I have a Master's degree in medical illustration as well as in dentistry. I refer to this book consistently to refresh my memory from the courses I've taken and I also pick up something new each time I read it. The only chapters that I don't pay much attention to are the ones that refer to Dr. Piper's system of classification on TMJ derangements. I tend to refer instead to Dr. Okeson's text book on TMD disorders which is a simpler system for the general dentist. I feel I would have to attend a few of Dr. Piper's course before I felt comfortable using his system. In a nutshell, this is probably Dr. Dawson's final gift to the dental community as he enters his twilight years. He is one of the living legends that I have the greatest respect for. His philosophy ties in well with other master dentists such as Dr. Frank Spear, Dr. John Kois, and Dr. Terry Tanaka.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great manual
For the first time I could find a comprehensive textbook on ocllusion and TMJ position, and applying these in practice. Lots of pictures and clinical hints. It's clinically oriented so General dentists should have it as an asset in their libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A timely integration of science and art
Pete has really tied these two topics together nicely, transforming a dry and boring topic into a sexy, stimulating meal for your grey matter.
Illustrations are fair, content superb, priced well, but with a terrible cover.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for those with pain
TMJ problems are not uncommon, nor is the suffering they cause.A visit to an orthodontist and in some cases an ENT are important to your care, but this book is quite a valuable read for your own self-care.
The TMJ Healing Plan clearly explains the mechanisms of TMJ dysfunctions, the common symptoms and signs they cause, and how this can affect the sufferer. It then clearly lays out simple measures to take at home to do what you can to care for yourself and alleviate pain and any other problems. It also explains why this is important even if your pain is minor or intermittent.Simple body alignment, posture, sleep habits, and similar changes can make a big difference to the patient's experience.
It's a pleasure to add a scientifically-based, clear, concise volume on a common concern to the shelves.

3-0 out of 5 stars The TMJ Healing Plan
This is be a good book for those who may be at risk of contracting a TMJ problem (those who have ever suffered an injury to their jaw, especially women). It deals with how posture, sleeping and tongue posistion relate to proper functioning of the T-M joint.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Better Bite From A-Z
I hate to gush, but if The TMJ Healing Plan had even been half as useful and half has packed with applicable information as it is, I'd still give it five stars. Most of the specifics have already been addressed by reviewers, but I want to mention something that seems obvious now, but which I had never really thought of: the jaw is a great barometer for the rest of our body and it's proper care and alignment are essential to better health and a comfortable physical existence. There are many things that can go wrong with the jaw: crooked teeth, stress, tongue thrust, injury and bad posture, just to name a few. But not to fear! The TMJ Healing Plan will teach you to deal with these issues in a variety of ways that don't require you to adopt impossible changes to your lifestyle. In short, we all just need a little proper alignment now and then and the exercises, reminders and lessons laid out in The TMJ Healing Plan will absolutely move you closer to optimum health.

I was really pleased with my purchase of The TMJ Healing Plan.*Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good CD
The main track for eliminating TMJ is OK.It doesn't quite knock me out like some other hypnosis CD's, but I do get pretty relaxed. Its definitiely beneficial, though how effective it is, is hard to say. When the track is over I am more relaxed, but I still think I might be clenching once I am asleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book about TMJ
Very helpful information about TMJ and how it might get worse or better with splint/bite plate.Exercises and other helpful information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I bought this CD thinking was going to be better than others I have tried but simply to me is not. Others I have bought seem to be lot better in time, quality and results. This cd lasts shorter than others I have heard, the instructor or man who did this cd moves to fast through the process of relaxation which I consider to fast compared with other cd's.

Overall I did not like it much and I won't recommend it to someone who is looking for a deeper relaxation, smooth and slow process and a better relaxing voice. This guy does not even have the voice to relax me. Not worth the try unless you are willing to ask for a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not sure if there's a perfect long-term cure...but 5 stars nevertheless.
I have suffered from night time bruxism (teeth grinding) and daytime jaw clenching for years, with its resultant headaches and facial/jaw pain. It has always come and gone, usually worsening about a month after a stressor. An acrylic nightguard worn during sleep used to be all it took to keep the offending behavior at bay, but that has not worked perfectly for the last year. After a particularly severe bout with all-day facial pain, I was desperate and willing to try anything. For the price, this CD seemed a reasonable solution to try. I've used it for slightly over one week now. Not only am I sleeping more soundly and waking more rested, I must be grinding less, because my facial pain is now 90% better...it was slightly better the morning after the first listen, and it's been improving ever since. Scott's voice is relaxing (though not quite as soothing as Brit Cherith Powell's voice on the cassette from "The Self-Hypnosis Kit" [which unfortunately does not come in CD form],which I also recommend), as are the visualizations, and I do prefer his technique of imagining tightening and relaxing various muscles versus actual muscle movement. I'm not certain a complete cure for bruxism exists, but I am thrilled with my current level of improvement, and will continue to listen to this CD every night before bed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was hoping for a guided meditation CD that was specific to TMJ.However, this CD was simply a nondescript single hypnosis session. If your unfamiliar with medical hypnosis, this CD will not further your understanding, nor will it explain the process and benefits of such practices.I would not recommend this CD if your struggling with TMJ. ... These and other signs should alert you that you may be pursuing a cure for a misdiagnosed condition that could be costing unnecessary time and expense as well as unwarranted medical tests and/or dental work. The author combines his extensive personal clinical experience with adjunctive therapies to help readers arrive at a treatment fitting their own circumstances. 3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
I have been suffering from problems with my jaw since having some heavy-duty dental work performed three years ago. Since that time, I have been to numerous health care providers to diagnose and help solve my problems: two tmj specialists, three dentists, two orthodontists, a tmj therapist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, orthopedic doctor, and a rheumatologist. Problems with the tmj seem to be nobody's area of expertise--even for some of those who profess to know a great deal. Just recently, I finally had a CT scan done on my jaw. What an insurance run-around!!!!!! BUT finally I have hard data that shows I have degenerative joint disease of my tmj. Not good news, but at least I have a jumping off point for becoming educated about treatment options available, and being able to make informed decisions.

The information in Dr. Goddard's book is interesting. Since I have personally done a lot of research on-line about tmj problems, I did not learn much of anything new from this book. But I can say that this is a good place to start your research. I probably could have saved a lot of time by reading this book first.

TMJ: The Jaw Connection was published in 1991, eighteen years ago. Advances in surgical treatment have been made since this time. I would say the book is worth reading, but if you have an existing knowledge base, don't expect to learn much new.

5-0 out of 5 stars TMJ The Jaw Connection
This book is written in clear language. It gives techniques for managing TMJ on your own, but does not negate getting professional help for splints and therapy. Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars TMJ
This author is the only one who seems to know anything about this disorder. I also thought he really cares because the cost of the book is such a small amount to part with.

I bought his other book for $10, Taking control of tmj

I spent about alot of money going to numerous dentists, doctors, chiropractors and no one taught me what this guy knows. I was very stressed out about what I was going through, but his book gave me more peace of mind. He explains whats going on with you also and how to correct it.Very inexpensive for what you get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TMJ reference with pictures
If you (or a loved one or a patient) have TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint) problems (pain, clicking, and/or decreased opening of your mouth), this book will walk you through the steps to arrive at a diagnosis. While not written for the layperson, most people with a strong medical background (and possibly a medical dictionary) will have no problem understanding this book.

Detailed instructions and plenty of pictures set this book apart from other TMJ disorder manuals. Not much on treatment, but this book will help you arrive at a correct diagnosis and a way to objectively track treatment with diagrams.

If you want detailed treatment plans, look elsewhere. But before treatment can begin, the exact nature of the problem should be understood, and this is the book to help you do just that.

Price is high, so be on the look out for a used copy or a good sale. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars TMJ and Your Sanity
Dr. Andrew S. Kaplan's book is a God sent. It is informative and does not contain the condescending and often cruel and stupid remarks made by other medical doctors who have never suffered from this medical condition. I would consider it the first book you should purchase if you believe you have TMJ. The Summary Self-Help section is outstanding and a must!

Over the past 30 years, I have had the honor and at times responsibility to review numerous books for various journals, magazines and societies. As my background is not in medicine, most of my reviews have been in history, psychology and education.

During this period, however, I have from one time or another suffered from TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Pain. Sometimes the problem was an offensive click in my jaws or ring in my ears and at other times a severe and limiting condition which causes headaches, neck pain, facial pain, severe toothaches, and the usual dizziness. All TMJ is not alike so please do not compare conditions. YOU know your pain! Also the doctor, unless he has TMJ, does not know or understand the degree of your pain. Pain affects different people, differently.

What are some points mentioned in the book and all others?

1. TMJ may be caused by a physical condition (i.e. being hit in the face by a ball, being in a car accident, whiplash or numerous other physical conditions. It can also be caused by stress which is a psychological condition. NO, this condition does not mean you have a mental problem. It only means that if your have difficulty accepting stress you may grit your teeth or clench you teeth tightly. This clenching usually occurs at night.
2. When you hear a clicking in your jaws or a ringing in your ears, you should consider going to a dentist who is either a specialist in TMJ or one that can refer you. A dental or medical center is the best place to start, especially if pain is present. Skip the local dentist as most do not understand or care about TMJ pain. Also most often your medical insurance plan WILL NOT pay for TMJ if you just go to your local dentist. Finally you are wasting beneficial time.
3. Does the pain go away? Some times the pain and clicking does go away. If it does it will probably come back. Especially after you eat the next big steak or hard candy.
4. You must take control and become aware of the various important aspects of the condition. This book is a very good place to start. Beware of any doctor who may on the first visit, say it is merely in your head (psychological) or that you must have surgery, braces or extensive dental work. Always use conservative action when working with TMJ conditions.
5. The first thing to do is immediately stop eating hard foods. Certainly you should stop eating meats (steak and pork), hard candy and junk food which can cause sugar overloads and stress.
6. Do not ever hold a pen or pencil in your mouth or cradle a phone to your jaw.
7. I have discovered from most books on TMJ and personal experience that very soft foods (whipped potatoes, lima beans, squash, milkshakes, vegetable drinks, soft cooked vegetables, FISH, and chicken) are the first line of defense. NEVER chew gum.
8. Ask your doctor to make you a night guard (mouth piece or splint) which is very inexpensive and may "correct" your condition nearly immediately. The splint may reduce pain, allow healing and remove certain habits of clenching.
9. Medication is in many cases a must. Take as few as possible. Although NOT a medical doctor, from personal experience a muscle relaxant (Skelaxin) and anti-inflammatory (Mobic, Bextra, etc.) work best. The best and "safest" medications for TMJ are simple Tylenol and aspirin. Some people have to go on stronger drugs to kill the pain. If you do need a stronger medication, find a good Chronic Pain Clinic. Most doctors have never had TMJ and do not understand or care about the pain component. Addiction is bad but suicide is worse!
10. Initially most specialists agree that you should start with a flat-plane splint. This splint will not do damage to your teeth formation and usually works. If not, you may have to move up to a repositioning splint. These can cause change in the formation of your mouth (teeth) and should NOT initially be used.
11. It is always good to try some massage, trigger-point therapy, physical therapy, exercise and a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. If these therapies hurt, most good doctors will tell you not to use them.
12. Make sure you know the problem through a good set of examinations, x-rays, CT, and MRI. One experience of each is enough and there is no need of traveling from doctor to doctor having the same tests done and redone.
13. Start working on your posture. This book tells you that it is one of the most important things to do when battling TMJ. All good books say the same.
14. You should cope with stress by using hypnosis, counseling, relaxation techniques and biofeedback.
15. Finally do not spend all your money on numerous trips to different doctors. Find one doctor that works and stick with him/her. Work with your doctor to arrange your treatments (types, times and reasons). Take control.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About TMJ - how to help the author
Amazon and the reviews it published on this book presented it as aday to day "how to" book for persons suffering with TMJ.Unfortunately, the book is little more than one woman's crusade against corrective surgery she had and a diatribe against those who performed it.To Amazon's credit, my purchase price was promptly refunded - to my detriment (my diatribe) I had to pay postage both ways.Donald Hecht ... Product Description
This describes the TMJ pains and associated ailments of the body that come from the mal location of the jaw bone in its socket (TMJ). This posture is totally dependant on the fit of the teeth. When we do a bite correction procedure the pains and headaches stop. The profession has not been taught to do this. They generally recommend splints or jaw joint surgery. The splint changes the bite temporarily and relieves symptoms but when you take out the splint the same old bite restarts the problem. My book is a paradigm shift treatment and is very controversial. Read about how Burt Reynolds got relief after 30 dentists trie ... Read more

"TMJ Cured" is a must read for anyone who has a bite problem. Dr. Taylor has done an excellent job of describing how to fix what causes TMJ. He has included many pictures to show you what needs to be done in order to fix that bite problem that many of us have. In addition, this is a must read book for dentists to help their TMJ patients.

Furthermore, how many people have headaches, sinus infections, ear, mastoid infections, tooth infections, and don't even know they might caused by TMJ? You must buy this book if you want to eliminate the chance that TMJ could be causing these problems.

Dr. Taylor, you have done a great service to mankind for writing this book.

Have not looked at it much, it is a little older then my other TMJ book, but it has some good info.

5-0 out of 5 stars marginalbut has some interesting ideas
The title of your book is very good as TMJ does have indeed many many faces. Unfortunately the medical and dental communities ingeneral tend to treat TMJ in the traditional dogmas of the past forty years or more. I am a dentist who treats TMJ problems with functonal jaw orthopedics and when done correctly this technigue "unmasks" TMJ as the true culprit as the causitive factor of most all chronic headaches, neck aches and other associated head and neck pain problems. The most common ailment associated with TMJ is the chronic headache including migraine. Thousands of cases have been resolved using functional jaw orthopedics. ... Read more
