Excerpt: 1966 Topeka tornado -On June 8, 1966, Topeka, Kansas was struck by an F5 rated tornado. It started on the southwest side of town, moving northeast, passing over a local landmark named Burnett's Mound. According to a local Native American legend, this mound was thought to protect the city from tornadoes . It went on to rip through the city, hitting the downtown area and Washburn University. Total dollar cost was put at $100 million making it, at the time, one of the costliest tornadoes in history. That is $658.65 million in 2008 dollars making it the 6th costliest tornado in the U.S. During the early evening of June 8 at 6:37PM CDT, a small tornado was reported in the college town of Manhattan, west-northwest of the city. As the tornado that would slash though Topeka began developing eighteen minutes later at 6:55PM, eight miles west of town, the National Weather Service could not detect the developing tornado on radar as the Topeka forecast office used a modified military radar that was donated by the government following World War II. While it was considered state-of-the-art for its time, it had a limited ability to detect tornadic activity, compared to the Doppler weather radar of the present day. Damage path of the 1966 Topeka Tornado Damage in downtown TopekaAround 7:30PM CDT, a 1/4 to 1/2-mile (400800 m) wide tornado tracked into the southwest side of town, moving northeast, and passed over Burnett's Mound. On the Washburn University campus, many students in the Carnegie Hall building were taking...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2710888 ... Read more

Excerpt: Hurricane Fabian was a powerful Cape Verde-type hurricane that hit Bermuda in early September during the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season. Fabian, the sixth named storm, fourth hurricane, and first major hurricane of the season, developed from a tropical wave in the tropical Atlantic Ocean on August 25. It moved west-northwestward under the influence of the subtropical ridge to its north, and steadily strengthened in an area of warm water temperatures and light wind shear. The hurricane attained a peak intensity of 145 mph (230 km/h) on September 1, and it slowly weakened as it turned northward. On September 5, Fabian made a direct hit on Bermuda with wind speeds of over 120 mph (195 km/h). After passing the island, the hurricane turned to the northeast, and became extratropical on September 8. Fabian was the strongest hurricane to hit Bermuda since Hurricane Arlene in 1963. It was both the most damaging and the first hurricane to cause a death on the island since 1926. The hurricane's powerful winds resulted in moderate damage and destroyed roofs throughout the island. A strong storm surge associated with the hurricane killed four people crossing a causeway on Bermuda, temporarily closing the only link between two islands. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=742834 ... Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The 1932 Atlantic hurricane season ran through the summer and the first half of fall in 1932. The 1932 season was an active one. An early tropical storm formed in May and hit Hispaniola, causing minimal damage. A Category 4 struck Galveston, Texas and the Galveston Seawall proved its worth. A Category 1 hit Alabama. The 1932 Bahamas Hurricane passed over the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane. A late-season Category 4 killed up to 3,000 people in Cuba. A Category 2 had a direct hit on Puerto Rico. And two tropical storms came ashore in Louisiana and one hit Florida. A tropical storm formed on May 5 in the south-central Caribbean Sea. Moving slowly northeast, the system gradually strengthened to its first peak of 45 mph (one-minute sustained) on May 7, and made landfall shortly thereafter on Hispaniola as a minimal tropical storm. The system weakened over land as it crossed the Dominican Republic, emerging into the western Atlantic on May 8 as a 40 mph tropical storm. The weak tropical storm then began to curve more to the northwest on May 9 while restrengthening slightly, regaining a secondary peak of 50 mph on May 10 south-southwest of Bermuda. The system weakened to a depression shortly thereafter, and the diffuse system dissipated on May 11 just to the southwest of Bermuda. Although the system affected Hispaniola as a minimal tropical storm, little damage was reported, and there were no reports of damage from Bermuda. Additional reports of damage, if any, are unknown. A tropical storm formed August 11 in the southern Gulf of Mexico near the Yuca...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1458309 ... Read more
