3-0 out of 5 stars A Taste of Wisconsin
Great Wisconsin Restaurants provides, basically, a list of good quality Wisconsin restaurants with a several paragraph description of the cuisine and/or setting. The restaurants are chosen by, and the blurbs written by, recently departed Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel food reviewer Dennis Getto. As such, the restaurants tend toward his preferences - mostly upscale, mostly located in the Southern third of the state and tilted toward the California-style cuisine. That said, Mr. Getto selects many restaurants of very high quality and, thankfully, at least a few restaurants from every portion of the state.Who would have thought that a great restaurant could be found in Mayville, Wisconsin?(The Audubon Inn, by the way.) The blurbs are nothing special - nothing more than a half a newspaper food section review - but provide enough information to prepare a diner to make good choices at the featured restaurant.

Be careful, however, in making sure to update the information provided here. This book was published in 1997.Many of the featured restaurants have gone out-of-business or declined in quality. So be sure to at least run a web search before, for example, you drive all the way to Madison for a dinner at Deb and Lola's.(It no longer exists.) ... Tells you where to find the best online travel sites for world-wide travel.Amazon.com Review
If you're reading this review, you've already discovered the Internet and its huge impact on society; suddenly, the whole world is just a click away. This is especially true for people with a passion for travel. Go to any search engine and enter the name of your dream destination; chances are, dozens of Web sites will pop up--everything from listings by giant hotel conglomerates to Bob and Doris's online account of their bird-watching trip. This is both the beauty of the Web and also one of its most serious flaws; with so many sites to choose from, how does a traveler in search of the best information find what he or she really wants? Let Fodor's Net Travel walk through the Web pages for you. You'll get only the best, coolest, most informative sites relating to wherever you're going.

After an introductory section geared toward users who are new to the Internet, the book is divided into eight parts: "Travel Central" contains addresses and descriptions of sites that contain travel literature, hotel listings, airline departure schedules, and travel advice for those on a budget. Sections on Africa and the Middle East; Asia, Australia, and Oceania; Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; and North America include Web sites devoted to the countries and cultures in each area. This is where you'll go for specific information about hotels in Cairo or languages spoken in Cameroon. Finally, "Theme Travel" focuses on resources based on activities rather than locations--the best fishing spots in the world, for example, or romantic destinations for honeymooners. Fodor's Net Travel is easy to use, and it provides Internet users with a great road map to the must-see sites in cyberspace. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Desk Reference
Very Beneficial for anyone in the travel field. There are loads of information especially web sites. I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book with it all.....
This book has everything in it! All of the phone numbers, zips, airport codes, etc. Great referance tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not a "complete" refereance
This book is definitely helpful, but I wouldn't call it "complete". I was hoping to see information about airline ticket class codes, and the list of tour companies & cruise lines is by no means complete. I would say it's "okay" but most of the resources can easily be searched for online in the same amount of time it would take to open the book & find the correct page.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Travel Agent's complete desk refenece
good book, good source to find travel inf for travel agents

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for home travel business
I love and it's more than I bargain for. Down side I wish there were tabs to seperate each section for easier referance. It's a must have for new home based travel agents. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique guidebook is definitely for those interested in experiencing new tastes on an affordable budget. In this authoritative restaurant guide to New York City, eminent food historian, critic, and culinary anthropologist Robert Sietsema offers more than 600 places in 80 national and cultural groupings, personally selected by him, that reflect the culinary tastes of the entire world. Sietsema, who updates his research each year, has zeroed in on restaurants big and small-holes in the wall and off-the-beaten-track eateries-where inevitably delicious and innovative cuisine is enjoyed daily by a local and faithful clientele. He introduces you to exotic places you didn't know existed. Each ethnic restaurant is explained, as is the food you are about to experience. With only a short subway ride, readers can expand their gastronomic knowledge with the rich cuisines of Malaysia, Pakistan, Armenia, New Guinea, Surinam, Haiti, Ecuador, Poland, Bulgaria, Central Asia, West Africa, and many more-not to mention regional American cooking-all within the boundaries of New York City. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, some out of date
This book had lots of good ideas for reasonably priced places to eat in NY.A few were already out of business though. It would have also been nice to have a map to more easily find the locations.Nice reviews though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously comprehensive guide
I was first introduced to Robert Sietsema's excellent taste in the Village Voice, when it featured the top 100 Italian restaurants in New York City.

Several amazing Italian experiences later, I knew I had to find more of his recommendations. When I stumbled across this guide, I felt as though I'd hit the jackpot. It features practically any cuisine you can think of, from Venezuelan to Tunisian with concise descriptions and suggestions of which entrees to order.

The best part of the guide is that the restaurants featured are generally priced below $20 per person, a godsend in one of the most expensive cities in the world!I immediately dined at a restaurant I'd found in the guide and was bowled over by the quality and amount of food I received for the amount I paid.

This is a must for any New Yorker who isn't afraid to experiment with different cuisines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the Money
We have now tried many listings in this book, and were only disappointed on one occasion (even then the food was not bad... just not noteworthy). This book has pointed out many hole-in-the-walls we've been walking past for years, like Snack on Thompson, or Soul Fixins on 34th, that were just amazing.Even in areas where we thought we had favorites (like curry hill) the recommendations in this book topped them all (Chennai Gardens). Its true there is some risk that some places might be out of business, especially in NY, but none of our attempts have found a closed shop. The only negative about this book for Manhattanites is that many listings are in the outer boroughs, but believe me, once you've experienced this book it will make you want to get on the subway.

5-0 out of 5 stars More to NYC eating than Zagat
This leads a curious eater away from the formula and predictable eateries in Manhattan to inexpensive and delicious places in outlying neighborhoods. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for my tastes, and probably yours
While perhaps not as streamlined as some others like the Zagat Survey, this is my favorite restaurant guide of the five or six I own. Its priority is the same as mine: good and interesting food, rather than decor, service or even "star quality." Most of the selections are very affordable (for New York City), which helps.

In my area so far, I've tried two or three restaurants in three ethnic groupings. This guide has been accurate: the restaurant which the guide features in each group has been the best, and only in one case the most expensive.

My only complaint would be that browsing for a particular type of ethnic food isn't always fast. The groups are logical but not totally intuitive, so it may take a few minutes to locate Indian food in the "South Asian" section. It's all here, though, from any sub-category of Chinese to Uzbekistani. ... Read more

Product Description
WHERE THE LOCALS EAT:( A GUIDE TO THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN AMERICA, answers the perpetual question What's for dinner? The most comprehensive and reliable restaurant guide on the market, WHERE THE LOCALS EAT conatins recommendations for more than 20,000 restaurants in more than 1,000 American cities. The restaurants included in the guide were named as the best in local newspaper and magazine readers' polls, by local restaurant critics and editors, and by local business and professional people and field reviewers.None of the restaurants in WHERE THE LOCALS EAT paid to be included.

Magellan's researchers gathered information on seventy-five different categories of restaurants -- restaurants known for everything from their barbecue or vegetarian menu or wine list to their "child-friendly" atmosphere.Few cities can boast seventy-five varieties of restaurants -- not every city offers sushi or Spanish cuisine or twenty-four hour dining -- but the listings for many larger cities are extensive. And in most cities, there is more than one "best" restaurant listed for many categories. This is reflective of Magellan's research; if their sources named several "best" Italian restaurants, so did they. Each restaurant listing contains the name, telephone number, and street address of the recommended restaurant. For other information about a restaurant, such as its hours of operation or whether it requires reservations, the Magellan editors suggest phoning the restaurant. The identity of research sources is closely guarded.Lee Wilson will say only that the directory includes restaurants named as the best in town in local newspaper and magazine polls, by local restaurant critics and editors, and by local business and professional people. However, Magellan will accept nominations for the next edition of the directory from anyone who is not affiliated with the restaurant nominated; nominations can be made on the form in the back of the book or on the WHERE THE LOCALS EAT web site, at www.magellanpress.com. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars maybe the most useful book I've ever owned
I have eaten at about 200 of the restuarants in this book and with the exception of one they were dead on. I wish an updated version would be published. Some of the listings are closed.

5-0 out of 5 stars where the locals eat
only book to take on the road for restaurants

4-0 out of 5 stars It stays in our car for frequent use.
This book makes cross country back road traveling even more fun. Sure there are a few problems, but most fair-sized towns have entires, and many small towns do. We have had wonderful fun and some interesting, to say the least, meals because of it. Well worth its price.

4-0 out of 5 stars We've had good experience
We've used this book four times, and have been pleasantly surprised each time (Carson City NV, Winnemucca NV, someplace or other in UT, and San Francisco).

1-0 out of 5 stars How reliable is it?
I was puzzled by the selections chosen for my hometown. Especially puzzling was the choice of Edgardo's for "Best Latin American Restaurant".Edgardo's is an Italian restaurant without a singleLatin American offering on its menu.Since Arlington has an excellentarray of Latin American restaurants, this error is inexcusable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific infomation, Well organized
Unlike the previous review, I found this book to be loaded with valuable information. If you are thinking about working on a ship, or even an avid cruising wanting an overview of what your cruising entails then I highly recommend you buy this.Every kind of employment potential on a ship is listed in appropriate categories. The individual job descriptions are brief but the words from people actually doing those jobs were very insightful and instructive. The explanations of how to actually apply for, interview, and secure the jobs was extremely useful. The listings of all the companies and each of their ships is something, I have not found anywhere else - despite searching on the web.Having an actual address for each of them is really terrific.
I am not personally looking for a job at sea.I bought this book for my niece who loves to travel and has spent several years working in far off places. I too have spent many years in many places, doing many things, but health has limited my travel options to cruising.I loved this book so much that I'm keeping it and buying my niece another copy.As I said before, this is the only source I have found in one place that lists virtually every company and all of their ships (to 2005 when the book was publish).
I do have one warning - the book is British and thus much of the wording and orientation is from that point of view.Having spent many years living in England, that didn't faze me, but I recognize it might be a bit confusing to an American, however the book is so valuable that it's totally worth looking past that.
I am a bookaholic, buy hundreds a year, but this is the very 1st time I've been moved to write a review. This book is too good to pass up.I'm now going to buy a 2nd copy so my niece will get her own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money on This Book
You will find everything on the internet, with one click of Google, there are "no secrets" nothing, great book if you want to be entertained and be an armchair cruise ship employee without leaving home, but that's about it, our daughter already had far mor PERTINATE material on hand than this book even had in all it's pages.Too much "filler", meaning a lot of empty writing and words, to make the book look big and interesting. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars comments on Santa Fe's hamburgers, burritos, enchiladas
I do not appreciate you making comments about our food in such a way.So many of the recipes that are such a raving success now are still made from old recipes from the old dirt roads of Santa Fe.The recipes that are new don't taste the same way our native food is made.People that don't know any better go for it because of all the hyp on it.Native Santa Feans and their decendants know the difference of today's foods and the originals. Please don't make such a comment that until these chefs came along that no one knew how to cook...we are the ones that taught the likes of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Information contained in the book is pre-1999,very dated.
The cover reads The Only Travel Guide Youll Ever Need. Presumptuous, to say the least; especially in a world where websites appear and disappear weekly. Though the copyright is 1999 the information contained in the book is pre-1999, thus very dated.

I used this book to plan a trip to Nova Scotia.More people, when shopping, use the Internet for travel than any other category and this would tell if the book was worth the purchase price. It is not.

The listing under accommodations for both hotels and Bed & Breakfast were sparse.B&B had three listings and one page would not come up, another had been absorbed by another web site and the one that was still relevant was cumbersome to use.Hotel & Resorts had five listings four of which connected, one was co-oped.I linked my way to a site that I used to reserve accommodations.

Save your money. You can find most of what you want using a good bot.A bot is a software tool for digging through data. You give a bot directions and it bring back answers...Conditionally Recommended. 2 Stars

The only thing wrong with the book is there should be an accompanying, searchable CD-ROM so the hyper-textdestinations would be instantly accessible with a web browser and a click. It would seem a publisher that would want to publish this book wouldunderstand how valuable the content would become in digital form. Thenegligble cost of a CD-ROM would not impact unfavorably on profits becausethis book is a bargain at its current price.
