3-0 out of 5 stars Gives only the "greatest hits" of Nepal trekking
This book includes the biggest and most well-known treks around Nepal, and the descriptions of those treks are very detailed and comprehensive. The maps provided are accurate and helpful. If you are looking for alternatives or treks off the beaten tourist tracks, few of the featured routes fit that bill. In addition, there are very few short (less than 4 days) treks, and almost no routes within close proximity to Kathmandu. This book is good if you are coming to Nepal for less than a month and only want to hit one or two of the major treks. If you are planning to come for longer, or live here and want to explore less-touristy routes, you will need to supplement this book with your own research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best inspiration for trekking in Patagonia
This guide is great. We used it for doing the Sierra Valdivieso circuit and Paso de la Oveja near Ushuaia and it was very helpful. The Valdivieso is off the beaten track through remote areas and very well explained with some important GPS coordinates. Also we did the Torres del Paine circuit, Lago Pingo in TDP and the treks around El Chalten andallthough you do not really need a guidebook for doing these treks, it is still helpful for planning and very accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trekking in the Patagonian Andes
I used the 1998 edition for a three month trip in 2005. I went on long treks near Ushuaia, PN Los Glaciares near El Calafate, PN Torres del Paine, PN Nahuel Huapi near Bariloche, PN Chiloe, and PN Villarica.
Sometimes I found it difficult to interpret the directions until after the fact, however, the information was almost always correct. Not bad considering that the book was already several years old.
Planning out several months of travelling in advance and buying maps in Santiago and Buenoes Aires is impractical. The maps in the book were often the only navigation tool available and were suitable.
The pictures are beautiful.
If your Spanish isn't very good you will find this book is indispensible. (I had just enough to get on the right bus)I would strongly recommend this book to anyone planning to hike in the Patagonian region of Chile and Argentina south of Concepcion.

4-0 out of 5 stars convenient - all in one place
Everything that is in this book can also be found online...with a little digging. So if money is limited forgo this book, if not, it's a good, one-stop source of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Trekking in the Patagonian Andes
For the last year I've been planning a trip to Chile and Patagonia. This book has helped me plan and organize and decide which areas I want to see. This book has been full of helpful information about all the different treks in this region, the difficulty rating, miles, average days specific trails will take, and great maps. Not only does the book give great info about specific treks, it also gives really great information for newer backpackers, such as a checklist of what you should bring on the trek, what kind of food to bring, how to use a compass, first aid info, etc.(Though you should know these things before you trek around Patagonia.) I give this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Rocks
I am an avid traveler, hiker and explorer and have found the Lonely Planet guides to be the absolute BEST if your intention is to explore the "ins and outs" of a country without the services of an in-country guide or tour service. They are a valuable tool for the experienced treeker/hiker/tramper and also a great resource for the urban adventurer.Lonely planet pulls their data from a variety of folks- including locals, recent transplants and adventurers- who provide extremely relevant input for the books. I always find their rating of lodging and food accurate~~ low budget is truly low budget and their recommended picks are always clean, comfortable and well situated.I also find their description and maps of hiking/trekking/tramping routes very accurate, although I would still recommend using up-to-date topo maps, GPS or hiring a local certified guide if you are exploring off-piste, mountainous or rugged regions anywhere. There is no replacement for experience and sound judgment in the backcountry. This particular guide book is wonderfully laid out and their advice is keen.Unless you have a solid 3 months of time to adventure in more than one of the regions it is best to pick an area (like the Lakes District) and focus your time in one place.Obviously the Torres Del Paine or Fitz Roy regions see a lot of traffic but the other areas are absolutely fabulous, as well. While other guide books may cater to the "guided tour crowd", I find Lonely Planet caters more to the independent intrepid traveler. Two Thumbs Up.Enjoy your exploring.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For beginners and advanced
Photo Trekking is a very well paginated and simple to read book on commercial travel photography. I found it exceptionally informational on both advanced practices (pre and post production, branding, selling) and simple tips to look out for including composition, movement, focus, etc. The photography is stylistically unique and different than most classical travel books you will find. It's a great read for the new age of personal vision and style and I highly recommend picking it up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre images
I agree, there are some helpful tips in the book. The pictures on the other side (most of them in my opinion)are more like snapshots. I don't really like his compositions and use of light. He demonstrates at least that with proper contacts and advertisements you can sell everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good photography guide
There are some helpful tips in this book. I like that it includes the camera/lens settings for each shot (as I believe all such books should) and things like equipment checklist and travel tips. The book is well laid-out, organized and visually stimulating, with plenty of nice compositions and well edited images. It's the kind of book you could throw in your carry-on and take with you on your next vacation, then use as a guide to capture some great images, not the regular vacation snapshots we are used to seeing. Also some good tips on how to take photos and stay safe in unfamiliar and potentially dangerous locations. Definitely would recommend this book. ... Read more

This is an outstanding book with excellent content, tips and pictures. The 11 of us on the trek kept passing it around for helpful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent detailed descriptions and photos
I have a number of books on the Everest Region including Lonely Planets Trekking the Nepal Himalaya, Trailblazers Trekking the Everest Region and Berezuchas Trekking in Nepal. For details relating to route descriptions, photos, and practical info for the specific region I find this guide the best. It is very well written from its descriptions of the various main and side treks to the feel within the teahouse lodges. I have not been there yet so I cant verify the accuracy but Im very impressed. I have been posting to Lonely Planets Thorn Tree asking about various alternative trekking routes and have had some posters who had already been there say they didnt even know those options existed. The book is also smaller than some guides and the paper quality seems superior to the others. Its great to see some beautiful color photos. This guide clinched my decision to trek in the Everest Area. Hope this Helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for independent trekkers
In September 2009 I've been to Gokyo, Base Camp - Kalapattar and Chhukung, and since I was trekking alone, without guide or porter, I had the chance to check out most of the book. I found out that the directions are spot-on, and the maps almost dumb proof: the book is as good as a real guide, or even better.

The general info and Kathmandu chapters are good, but may be found on other guidebooks as well. The real highlights are the detailed walking routes and maps for the Khumbu area above Lukla. Everything was right there as detailed in the book, and following the indications I had a safe and easy trek.

If you go for independent trekking, either camping or lodge/teahouse, this book is really priceless: It's a great help planning your trek, and it's all what you need to go trekking on your own - in Kathmandu you just can get a bigger map of the Khumbu area and you're ready to go.

You may not need the book if you hire a guide: a good one will lead you on the right trail - which is impossible to miss, anyway - and tell you all what you need to know, but it is still helpful to know exactly where you are, and your options for an afternoon walk or a different viewpoint here and there, plus many other info and data about everything around there.

So, the bottom line is: find a place for this book in your backpack!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide, A real lifesaver for planning your trip
My boyfriend purchased two guides to assist us in Trekking up to Gokyo Ri in our Nepal backpacking expedition. The book alone got us safely through the entire trip without ever becoming seriously lost (although it helps to be able to ask passing locals too). Best of all, we happened to bump into the author at a cafe in Kathmandu before the start of our trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
I have used other Trailblazer guides before and have found them to be extremely helpful in planning for a trek. This guide provides a concise overview of the country, culture and essential "need to know" information which make for a more enjoyable experience during your visit. If you have room for only one guide in your pack this would be a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everest region
Excellent book. Information is up to date. Having been there before, I see it is accurate, precise and written in a style to convey important information clearly and correctly. Anybody wishing to go to Nepal and in particular, the Everest region, must read this book first. This book is not available in Australia (and maybe some other countries)I have been keen to read this travel guide for a long time and now I have it. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST trekking book I have ever used!!
Highly Recommended! I have trekked extensively in Nepal, including the Everest region three times, and this is the BEST trekking book I have ever used. Ever!

The maps are especially detailed and accurate - perfect! The trekking times are consistent and accurate, allowing me to plan how far I want to trek in a given day. I like the fact that the guidebook only focuses on one region, giving it a lot more detail. I even use the Kathmandu City Guide for my stay in Kathmandu. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any would-be Kilimanjaro climber
An excellent book chock-full of information about Kilimanjaro, routes, trekking companies, etc.A must-read for anyone interested in a Kilimanjaro climb. If you buy only one book to research a Kilimanjaro climb, this should be it.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than you probably need to know but good.
We bought this book in prep for a Kilimanjaro hike and safari to follow. We did quite an extensive search online and called a couple of travel agencies to look into packages for us.We wanted to make this as much of a cultural trip also, not just a U.S. company with U.S. guides telling us what they might happen to know about the place for an outrageous price. We also didn't want to get a company that is dirt cheap but doesn't have anyone that can tell you about the culture and history of Kili, the Serengeti, etc.I think the book gives you a good idea of what Africa, Tanzania and Kilimanjaro as well as the wildlife in the area is like.We have yet to take our trip, but from all the research we've done, this seems the most comprehensive, and is quite good if you are an information geek like I am.Otherwise, you can pick the parts out that you want and it is still a very good resource book for any small amount of information you might need.Fodor's Africa was horrible compared to this book. Don't get Fodors.Go to Barnes and Noble and review it quickly in the store and you will surely agree. ... Read more

Product Description
The most up-to-date trekking guide to one of the world's most biodiverse nations.

Includes a thorough introduction to Ecuador and its people.

No-nonsense information on what to expect, preparations, and safety.

Twenty-nine detailed trek descriptions, with 50 photos, 33 topographic maps, and 27 elevation profiles.

Comprehensive appendices, including lists of trekking companies, emergency contacts, and conservation organizations.

Ecuador's special appeal to trekkers, day-trippers, and nature lovers can be summed up in one word: accessibility. The country's unique combination of small size, exceptional geographic and biological diversity, and good transportation infrastructure places an outstanding variety of splendid natural experiences within easy reach of the adventurous visitor. Ecuador boasts more than forty-five protected natural areas, including national parks and private reserves, almost all of which offer trekking and day-hiking possibilities.

Many longer treks span several natural regions, from the highlands down toward the Amazon jungle or coastal plain. Ecuador receives many visitors (approximately 500,000 a year), but as yet relatively few people come specifically to trek. Unlike well-known trekking venues such as Nepal, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, and Chile's Torres del Paine National Park, trails in Ecuador are never crowded and offer virtually unlimited scope for exploration. Trekking in Ecuador is easily combined with a visit to the country's more traditional destinations: the Galápagos Islands, colorful indigenous markets, Amazon jungle lodges or Pacific coast beaches. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great start for trekking Ecuador
I have been to Ecuador a number of times, but I didn't know what I was missing until I purchased "Trekking in Ecuador". Contained in this book is all of the information you need to plan a great trekking advanture to Ecuador. The treks are easy to follow and offer some of the greatest scenery in the world. Ecuador stole my heart on my very first visit, and with this book I was able to see even deeper into her soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars a necessity to any trekker in ecuador
Robert and Daisy have compiled an incredible book not only in its diversity of trekking options, but in the quality, accessibility and remoteness of each one. I used this book religiously during my time in ecuador and was constantly amazed with the detail each trek description provided from start to finish. This book took uncertainty out of the equation and made independent trekking very accessible and incredible. I will never forget the beauty i saw in ecuador, and i owe my experience in part to Robert and Daisy

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are Trekking in Ecuador: You Need This BOOK!
This book is a must have for those interested in trekking in Ecuador. It provides numerous hikes that are broken down into ranges of difficulty. These treks will get you off the beaten path and into undiscovered Ecuador where you can see the real Ecuador and meet its enchanting people. We are Peace Corps volunteers in Ecuador and learned about this great book from other volunteers. It keeps getting passed down from one group to the next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the boot test with flying colours.
I recently spent a month trekking in Ecuador with this guidebook and I would recommend it to anybody interested in hiking in this beautiful country. There is something for everyone with short dayhikes near travelling hubs, week long treks through remote mountains, hikes that end in hotsprings and hikes that take you in search of the elusive Ecuadorian wild orchid. This guidebook contains all the information you need to set out on your own and the hikes I did were unforgetable. I waited untill Quito to buy a guidebook so I could compare all the books available and I can say now that this is, by far, the best hiking guide for the country. I will be back in Ecuador to walk some more of the beautiful trails described in Trekking in Ecuador.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried and True
On a recent month long trip to Ecuador I boot-tested three hikes in Trekking in Ecuador and was very happy with the guide. The book contains a good range of hikes from dayhikes near major travelling hubs to week long treks in glorious remote National Parks. There is an interesting variety to the hikes, one that ends in natural hotsprings, some that offer views of dramatic peaks and glaciers and a hike for those interested in seeing elusive wild Ecuadorian orchids. Although I have hiked extensively in beautiful mountain ranges all over the world, the trek "High Lakes and Ridges" is possibly one of the best hikes I have done. I was pleased to find hikes of all levels of difficulty and what a treat to hike on lesser known trails and have the mountains all to our selves. I saw Trekking with Ecuador for sale on the web before I left for Ecuador but I wanted to check my options in Quito. I definatly think that this is the best trekking guide for Ecuador and I wished I had bought it before my trip so I could have studied up. Happy trails! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for those without guides
We used this book over a 7 week trek across northern India as a companion to the larger India Lonely Planet volume. It is good for those who want to backpack without a guide in India. We took three of the shorter trips in it in the winter. The maps are not great, but that's India for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars CONTENT & Information ARE GREAT....... the book tore away from binding within the first hour of e reading.
The book quality is really lacking. I'm sure it will have completely fallen apart by the time I return as the book has come apart from the binding with only an hour of use.Lonely Planet, you know how durable these books need to be!!! OR MAYbe it's Amazon???? Anyway it was defective.
CONTENTS HOWEVER ARE MOST HELPFUL AND IT IS WELL WRITTEN.

4-0 out of 5 stars for himalaya lovers
the book presents a very focussed view for people interested in trekking in the indian region of the himalayas. it gives details of treks along with relevant maps. it is not for those looking for a general tourist guide for the region, but can be used by a variety of trekkers.usually one does not trust the trek details and advice given in such books and this might be very general at times. but it is different in this book. I am myself from one region in the himalayas and some of the facts and details about my region were also interesting and so accurate that this made me like and trust the book.i have also read the previous edition, and the author has built the book across regions. but the information is not very consistent across regions and one can easily make out some gaps for some regions. on the whole a good buy for people interested in specifics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Excuse for a Map
This map represents only a small portion of this region. The details are good and the readability is acceptable, however the region supposedly discussed is far larger than the map.A terrible waste of paper (especially since it is only printed on one side!)I just cannot imagine what was the thinking behind this design - anyone going to this area needs the entire picture. It is virtually useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars South Pagatagonia Icefield Map far better
This map was very disappointing. It only includes the area north and west of Chalten to just west of the major peaks. We're planning on doing a circuit from Paso Marconi to Paso del Viento and this map doesn't show any of the area. Also the trekking route to L Toro is not included on the map. This map is only printed on one side so its kind of a waste of paperFar better is the South Patagonia Icefield Map which contains 6 times as much information in the same amount of space and the same scale. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All I needed
This book was all I needed for my trek around the Annapurna circuit in November 2008.Buy it and you will be more than fine on your journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY INFORMATIVE
I learnt quite a bit from reading this book. It's very informative, but it ain't Lonley Planet

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiking Annapurna? Read this book!
Get this book if you plan to hike the Annapurna trail.Contains detailed information you can't find in the other travel books on the little villages you encounter on the trial along with a handsketched map. The only negative I have is the book is out of date.It was last updated in 2005.Progress is occurring extremely fast on certains parts of the trail.I'm still wondering how they built a road in Jomsom, but doesn't connect all the way to the bottom. Hike now before the place becomes a super highway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good choice for backpacking trip to Annapurna
I purchased this book in preparation for a trip. Going to trip tomorrow so this review is written before the trip. This is a very good book for somebody who is planning to do a trip in Annapurna region in Nepal. The book is good in size so fits well into a day-pack. Very good and relevant information with detailed maps of many treks that you can take, solid advice on medical aid, hotels, things that you allowed to do and things that should not be done. This is not a book about history or details of which tourists attractions to see - there are highlights and short description on these.
Overall, it is a great book for the backpack traveler in Nepal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't trek without it.
This guide was all you need for trekking in the Annapurna Region. The maps were great as were the recommendations on guesthouses, trekking times and food.People with other trekking guides (IE LP) asked to read my guide as they realized how good it was. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very good guidebook, but don't make it your trekking bible..
this book was a great help in introducing me to the world of trekking, in terms of all the equipment i would need and the things i could expect while on a trek in nepal... it made the idea of trekking in nepal very feasibleto me, and gave me confidence... but once i started trekking in nepal, ionly used it as a light reference, mainly to look at the maps and see howfar along i was on the trek, and perhaps to gain some information about theareas i was going through... as the author states, the suggesteditineraries are not absolute, and, according to how much time and money youhave, should only be used as a reference; some suggested days were too longfor my group, and on other days we trekked longer distances thansuggested... it's not every year you get to go to a place like nepal, so isuggest you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your trek, take someextra rest days, and not make your trek a race...i needed more money thanwhat this book suggested i would need; prices change... and also, especially on the annapurna trekking route, many lodges are being builtevery year and it's impossible for guidebooks such as this to keep up; ioften thought it unfair for books like this to name specific lodges, whileother lodges, some of them new, with better food and people, gounmentioned; talking with guides, porters, or other trekkers would be agood way of finding quality lodges... i think this book does a very goodjob of preparing you for a trek in nepal, but once you're there, keep yourmind open for other sources of information, and use this book as areference guide and not your one and only trekking "bible"...you'll get more out of your experience in nepal that way...

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice only for the armchair traveller.
I've used this book for 2 treks in Nepal and it was a disappoinment (the book, not the treks). As mentioned above, the book provides a plethora of trekking essentials (preparation, etc.) and background info. To use it as aguide on the actual trail is altogether another matter.

The maps are toogeneral and is NOT suitable for actual guidance. The suggested itineraryvaries too greatly for the average trekker. Some suggested trekking daysthat are way too difficult to complete or way too short. Things arechanging quickly in Nepal...and the book does not keep up with thisadequately.

I've meet many people on the trail that were alsodissapointed in the misinformation regarding festival dates. The Nepaleseuse a lunar calendar so it is easy to see why the dates can be off fromyear to year. It is unfortunate if someone plans their vacation by this. There are too many misleading information here...and for aforeigner/tourist/traveller/trekker, this can prove disappointing andcostly.

Take it from someone who's been there, use this book to entertainyourself, not to trek with.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest trekking guide to Nepal
I bought it when I was planning to travel to Nepal. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but the informations on the book helped me a lot to get in contact with nepali culture and details about trekking in this interestingcountry.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the Nepal trekker needs to know: it's all here.
This latest edition of Stan Armington's guide to trekking in the Nepal Himalaya (note the lack of an "s", as in "Sierra") provides a panoply of information for both the trekker and the armchairtraveler. First traveling to Nepal in the mid-sixties, Mr. Armington haslived there since 1971. He has been in the business of organizing trekslonger than almost anyone. He knows the country and the people and writesfrom a wealth of first-hand knowledge.

Whether one treks solo (notrecommended, really, but certainly possible) or with a trekking company, this informative book provides ALL the information one needs to have asuccessful, delightful, and authentic trekking experience in this ancientand remote kingdom. (Nepal is a Hindu kingdom, with a Hindu king.)

As Mr.Armington acknowledges, trekking is neither a walk in the country nor aclimbing experience. Hence, he goes into great detail to prepare theadventurer for what will for most people be one of the major vacationingevents of their lives.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in theworld. A visitor must know how to take care of oneself and also how to havea minimal impact on the environment and social structure. Mr. Armingtoncovers all these matters excellently.

The trekking routes are there, too, almost all of them walked--and measured (with a GPS)--by the author toensure complete accuracy.

Armchair travelers will enjoy the colorpictures and the descriptions of the land and its people. Travelers andtrekkers will want to devour the information, basicallycover-to-cover.

For someone planning a trek to the Nepal Himalaya, thisbook is an absolute essential. It should be used through all stages ofplanning and carried in the rucksack on the trek. It's that good, and thatnecessary, and that complete--a distillation of a adult lifetime ofexperience in the region by a world-reknown travel professional--in a word,a real bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ask not what Nepal can do for you . . .
I lived for a year in Nepal, and this book was absolutely indispensible to me (the medical advice alone probably saved my life). Moreover, it was as relevant to me after a year as it was the day I stepped off the plane. Bezrushka is keenly aware of both the damage and the benefits that tourism brings to a country like Nepal, and his highest priority in this book is to make travelers sensitive to their own cultural, economic, and social impact. He does this, however, without sanctimonius finger-wagging. The book is consistently eloquent, perceptive, deeply informative, and highly practical at every level, and it stands in stark opposition the exploitative spirit that pervades all too many contemporary travel guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, dry and preachy
While the completeness of Bezruchka's guide cannot be faulted the tone and style certainly don't compare to Jamie McGuinness's book on the same topic. In comparison this book was quite a chore to read especially since it is peppered with sermons on globalization. An extremely capable guide but there are good alternatives you may find more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about trekking in Nepal!
Fifteen years ago I started my trekking company's operation in Nepal with information from this book! The trek descriptions and the information on organizing a trek offer all the nuts and bolts. The background information is fascinating as are Dr. Bezruchka's views on poverty and culture shock.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best trekking guide to all Nepal
This is the book that first opened my eyes to Nepal and its culture. It's much more than a guidebook: it has a sensitivity and compassion for its subject that is almost unique in the field of travel writing. It doesn't coddle you with if-it's-day-three-this-must-be-Namche route descriptions, but lets you find your own adventure and gain profound insights along the way. It also has an extensive medical section.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exhaustive, entertaining and educational guide
Stephen Bezruchka has prepared a valuable and complete guide to trekking in the Nepal / Everest region. The book offerspractical advise from years of personal experience for anyone thinking about a trip to the area.Bezruchka also creates a much needed ecological awareness and offers substantial insight into the culture of Nepal. The book is much more than a travel guide and just plain interesting.I don't often give books five stars, but this work was beyond my highest expectations - a labor of love.Highly recommended! ... Product Description
The spectacular natural landscape of giant mountains, wild deserts and deep gorges, combined with a thriving Tibetan-Buddhist culture makes Ladakh ("Little Tibet") one of the most fascinating destinations in the Himalaya.

Trekking in Ladakh is the fully revised third edition of Charlie Loram's practical guide to low impact trekking in this high altitude region of northwest India. For this new edition, researcher Jim Manthorpe has rewalked all the routes.

The book includes comprehensive trail descriptions and 75 maps covering both classic and lesser-known routes throughout:
*Central Ladakh
*Nubra
*Rupshu
*Zanskar
*Western Ladakh
*Also includes Stok Kangri trekking peak (20,188ft)

As with all Trailblazer hiking guides, the route maps in Trekking in Ladakh include features not usually found on standard maps: walking times, directions, tricky junctions, places to stay and eat, and points of interest. These are not general-purpose maps but fully edited maps drawn by walkers for walkers.

This book is much more than a hiking-route guide--all the practical information hikers need is included, from planning their trip and getting to Ladakh from North America to arranging a trek (whatever their style of trekking, from a short backpacking trip to a fully-guided expedition). There are town guides to Leh (capital of Ladakh), Manali, and Delhi, including street plans, what to see, hotels, and restaurants for all budgets. There's also background information on history, culture, and language; plus comprehensive sections on health and mountain safety.

The guide is particularly strong on environmental preservation: minimum impact for maximum insight. The author includes tips on how to travel with sensitivity and awareness through a fragile region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Armchair traveler
This is in fact the only detailed account, well illustrated, for a traveler to Ladakh (do you know where is it?), a small Buddhist-Islam country which still preserves many of the traditions already spoiled in Nepal & Sikkim.

Product Description
Hike longer and deeper into a wilderness of rich history and striking beauty.

*25 treks (multi-day outings averaging 30-50 miles long) in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia*Three itineraries with camp options for each trek-you choose the miles-per-day distance you travel*All in color: photography, 3-D "real image" topographic maps, trek summary charts, and elevation profiles for each route

Whether it's a 70-mile hike that traverses the crest of the Great Smokies from end to end or a trail in Pisgah National Forest dedicated to a local hiking pioneer, each trek in this guide was chosen for its unique natural features or cultural or historical legacy. Moderate treks stitch together established trails in new ways. More challenging journeys require some cross-country travel and route finding to link one trail with another.

Where treks incorporate classic trails as part of the whole, it's often with a twist. For example, the Iron Mountain Trail and a section of the Appalachian Trail are combined to form the unique Shady Valley Loop, eliminating the need for car shuttling between start and finish. For other treks, optional starts, alternate finishes, and recommended side trips add a wealth of possibility. Always, you choose your pace, with itineraries provided for different mileage-per-day goals. You'll find all the information you need at a glance, too:This guide is chock-full of features including a "Trail Summary and Mileage Estimates" chart listing directions and mileage for each landmark and junction and a "Suggested Camps Based on Different Trekking Itineraries" chart for each trek. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Southern Treks
Great ideas for 3+ day treks. These are great trails OFF the AT in the southeast. Most are NOT loops and they range from 17 to 70 or so miles. Good book with good info and not alot of useless information. Haven't tried any of the hikes but I have been on parts of one or two of the trails. Happy hiking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hiking the Southern Appalachians
If you are interested in the premier long trails of the SE US, then I recommend this book. This book is a great planning aid.The trail descriptions have just enough detail for planning but not specific "every turn" descriptions.I have hiked several of the featured hikes in this book.I have found that the maps and overviews are accurate.
There are some good photos in the book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the SERIOUS backpacker
For backpackers wanting to do tough trails with 12-18 mile days. Clear information, excellent photos, nice little maps too.

This is so much better than your typical Falcoln 3 mile loop hike book with scattered, inaccurate information. I used this book for the Art Loeb Trail and it was extremely helpful. I hope to do more of the trips in the book too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of information, but lacks some of the nice features found in other LP trakking guides
I endorse other reviewer's opinion that the book is useful in particular as a pre-trip planning. In this sense, in my opinion the book is well written, and contains a wealth of information on the subject. However, by comparing it for example with the similar LP guide *Trekking in the Indian Himalaya", it lacks some useful information, like description of side-trips, e.g. easy climbings along the trek. In addition, the index contains only geographical locations, which limits its usefullness.

3-0 out of 5 stars Use as ballast only
I second Isiah's opinion that the book is not very useful and is best read as a pre-trip planning material only. I have actually undertaken a few of the treks and in my opinion the book misrepresents the nature of several treks and contains errors in the route descriptions. For example, Isla del Sol trek in Bolivia is better done as a day hike instead of a multiple day trek described in the book. Also, campsites on Ausangate trek mentioned in the book are not situated in the most optimal locations and most trekkers supported by local guides camp in better spots. Finally, the book fails to convey the idea that even for experienced hikers most treks, esp. in Peru and Bolivia, really need to be contracted with local guides and/or pack animals for safety and more enjoyment... I would not recommend using this book as a trail guide without making inquiries locally, but it is still a good source of ideas, if you plan to trek in Central Andes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited usefulness once in country
I tried to use this book as my only travel guide (apart from the LP Peru or Bolivia). It has very limited info on bus routes, city maps, and other practical info common in LP country guides, so it is not meant to be used alone. And where it is strong in giving trek descriptions, it admits it should not be used as a trail map-guide.Most treks are affordably run out of local agencies with guides, so I didn't even bring the book with me on the trail. It is best used for pre-trip planning back home, deciding which treks you want to plan your itinerary around once in country. The LP country guide is really all you'll need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but Very Good.......
I can only speak to how helpful this book was to me on my trek (the Alpamayo circuit) and for the most part, it was a valuable friend to have along the way. The route description was well detailed and for the most part everything was as the book said it would be.Admittedly, it would have been nice if the book had mentioned the surfeit ofhorseflies which attack you in the Huiscash campsite, as apparently this is a well known campsite for the bothersome biting flies which dive-bomb you 5 at a time. I would have brought some bug repellent if I had known. But other than minor things like this, the book served it purpose very well, and I hope to use it again for when I go back to this beautiful part of the world. One suggestion I would make is to add a few more pages of Spanish words at the back of the book....that could only prove helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was very informative. It described quickly the geology and other "natural" facts about the area as well as supply excellent descriptions of the trails. It is small enough to carry with you. ... Read more
