Product Description
This new edition successfully blends primarily intermediate algebra topics, college algebra topics, and the essentials of trigonometry, and is aimed at students who need an algebra course to bridge the gap between elementary algebra and the more advanced courses in precalculus mathematics. Students learn to apply newly-learned skills with Kaufmann's unique approach: "learn a skill, use the skill to solve equations and inequalities, then use the equations and the inequalities to solve problems." This book should be of interest to first year undergraduate courses in algebra and trigonometry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning on your own!
This book is good for brushing up on skills or teaching yourself some things before a test, I liked it alot and brought more books in the "smart" series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away From This Book!!!!!!
This book is HORRIBLE!Almost 70% of the answers provided in the back of each chapter for checking your work are wrong.I have even checked the book's wrong answers through an independent tutor who confirmed that the book's answers were wrong in almost all instances.Unfortunately, the chapters with the most errors are the ones covering the more difficult subjects!This book will have you doubting your ability to do math in a matter of chapters.Stay away!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Review book, but don't buy it to learn new information
I bought this book a few years ago, and I was like, wow! now I get to learn all about trigonometry and inequalities and polynomials! gee whiz! but reading it, I found that the explanations weren't deep enough to actually TEACH me the concepts, that there weren't enough excercizes for people new to the algebra, and it wasn't until I finished my Algebra 1 class last year that I could fully understand the topics covered in this book, because I had learned all of them during the year(i.e. polynomails, quadratic equation). Looking back at this book, I think, however, that it is a good review book, in part because its coverage of topics is so superficial. So, if you've seen the stuff in this book before (algebraic expressions, equations, exponents, roots, logarithms, polynomails, inequalities, permutations, combinations, binomial therom, plane,solid and analytic geometry, parabolas, conics, trigonometry of degrees, radians) then you'll understand them, but if you haven't, go buy another book with better (and more) excercizes, more accurate answers to them, and better explanations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning Supplememtary
I began this book in the fouth grade. I wanted to excel in mathematics and geometry. Answers were somewhat accuarate; when they were not I was utterly perplexed.

The Algebra section was clear; I often needed to re-read sections to understand information expressed.Geometry was almost clear,again I needed to re-read and was sometimes confused. Analytic geometry wasvery puzzling- I needed adult assistace. Trig was very clear, and I nowhave a good grip on trig. Readers for this book should consider buyinganother ^workbook^ as to achieve stronger levels of understanding frompractice. Being determined to understand, this was essential.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of the wrong answers in the book
I am willing to give this book three stars because it provides a good review of high school math.I bought it as a warm up for future studies on Calculus and for preparation for the GRE.

However, there are severalwrong anwers that I have seen in the book.I am grateful to the PrincetonReview for confirming these mistakes by e-mail for me.

For those of youwho decide to get the book, here they are:

1) page 26, #7, x= -10/3 (not10/3)

2) page 28, #5, should be -3x squared -2x +1 over 2x squared-2x

3) page 120, exercise 8.4, #1, should be 64 (not 32)

Part of theproblem here may be the fact that the author, Marcia Lerner, only has aBachelor's degree.The publisher, Princeton Review, should consider hiringpeople with at least Master's degrees in the future."Math SmartII" is marginally acceptable as a learning tool.

I did find that itwas more helpful in studying for the GRE math section than the PrincetonReview's "Cracking the GRE CAT."That's because with that book(and some other GRE books), the idea is to teach you the best strategy foranswering the questions rather than making sure you understand all theconcepts behind the answers.So in that aspect, "Math Smart II"can be of help for GRE test takers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good...
I really like the prerequisites sections because it reviews important intermediate algebra that you'll use in pre-calc. It's nice to flip to each section to get a quick reminder of the rules. I'm at the end of chapter 3 now and so far I really like this book but the advanced language could be a little difficult at times so there are some things that just go in one ear and out the other. In addition to this book I also have the solutions manual and the dvd from the publishers website. I really like the dvd since the things I sort of understand after reading the book is clarified after watching the section on the dvd. I wish every math book had a dvd to compliment the material. As for the solutions manual, sometimes it skips algebra assuming you already know how it's solved which is fine but sometimes it's a tricky problem so it would be useful to see the mid-steps as well.

All in all it's a great book. I'd recommend buying the book early to review the prerequisite sections before your school semester starts. ... Read more

Product Description
The Dugopolski Precalculus series for 1999 is technology optional. With this approach, teachers will be able to choose to offer either a strong technology-oriented course, or a course that does not make use of technology. For departments requiring both options, this text provides the advantage of flexibility. College Algebra and Trigonometry is designed for students who are pursuing further study in mathematics, but is equally appropriate for those who are not. For those students who will study additional mathematics, this text will provide the skills, understanding, and insights necessary for success in future courses. For those students who will not pursue further mathematics, the extensive emphasis on applications and modeling will demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of mathematics in the world today. Additionally, the focus on problem solving that is a hallmark of this text provides numerous opportunities for students to reason and think their way through problem situations. The mathematics presented here is interesting, useful, and worth studying. One of the author's principal goals in writing this text was to get students to feel the same way. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I have used this book for College Classes.
This book is OK. The graphics are great but the concepts are not layed out in the best possible format. Several times I got confused at what the book was saying and had to take it to my teacher. If you have a good teacher though, this is a great book.

This series is the culmination of many years of teaching experience with the graphing calculator. The books were written from the beginning for use with the graphing calculator. Throughout the text, the authors emphasize the power of technology but provide numerous warnings of its limitations: they stress that only through understanding the mathematical concepts can students fully appreciate the power of graphing calculators and use technology appropriately.Additionally, the authors consistently use the same four-step process when introducing the different classes of functions. This allows students to easily make connections between graphs of functions and their associated equations and inequalities. ... Read more

Product Description
The text presents a circular function approach to trigonometry by demonstrating connections between the familiar algebra and the new language of trigonometry. This method–along with foreshadowing–is used throughout the text to provide students with a comfortable base for learning something new from something old or familiar. With just a few connections to algebra, students have the tools to understand the circular functions, their domains and ranges, and the relationship between the circular functions and the functional values. The approach immediately launches the student into the concept of periodic functions, their applications, graphs, and use in modeling many periodic phenomena. Beginning with this approach provides the student with a common thread that can be used to discover, connect and understand the remaining concepts of trigonometry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good math book
I bought this for my college trigonometry class. I think this book is actually really great. It explains things very nicely and bases everything off of the unit circle. Once you know the unit circle, you are able to do everything else in the book. It was very easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still could use more assistance with this.
I'm not good in math, and still needed assistance when using this book.I feel the author could have explained set values a little better.For instance, in the beginning chapter, she gives set values for the circle but failed to explain that they were set, leaving the student confused initally as to how she came up with the values.Eventually, I dropped the class as I was not doing well.

Update;
I retook the class a few years later and they were still using the book as the author teaches at my school and I think they are helping her make money this way.Going over it a second time, I understand it a little better and it is a pretty good book.Though she focuses more on circles than triangles in this Trig. I think there is only one chap. out of 6 on triangles. What I found most helpful of all was vid. on you tube.I was able to pass the class with those vid. and looking at her book.The teacher's notes were not that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from an instructor's point of view
My name is Dave Nosanchuk and I am a mathematics instructor at Oakland Community College.This was my first time teaching Trigonometry and I found Mrs. Aratari's Trigonometry - A Circular Function Approach to be a very well written math book.It provides students with very good step-by-step examples, well written exercise sets with clear and straight forward instructions, valuable chapter summaries, and chapter tests.The Student's Study Guide and Solutions Manual contain worksheets for each chapter that the instructor and students complete during class.These worksheets make teaching the class a lot easier because they indicate the important concepts to discuss and the order in which to discuss them.I was so impressed with the use of these worksheets that I have begun to adopt them into my teaching practices.Although the worksheets take a substantial amount of time to create, I feel that the benefit to my teaching and the students far outweighs the time spent.It was a pleasure to have these worksheets prepared in advance, especially now that I know how much time and efforts is spent on this preparation.

As an instructor, I found that by using the worksheets, my preparation time was reduced as much of the work has been done for you.In addition, the Instructor's Testing Manual contains multiple versions of section quizzes, chapter tests and final exams.These tests are formatted such that they are ready to be used, unlike other test banks that require the tests to be re-written before using.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book ever

It reviewed the chapters in a chapter summary, gave chapter tests, reviewed previous algebra knowlege along with clear and straight forward instrunctions, easy to understand. This book is just great. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual and effective pedagogical tactics
Traditionally located after functions and before calculus, trigonometry combines elementary proofs with everyday applications. Smith follows this mold, but breaks step in a very positive manner. The conventional wisdom has been to consider the trigonometric functions to be the ratios of the sides of a right triangle first, and then generalize. In this case the general functions are followed by the special cases, and it works.
The functions are defined as coordinates on the unit circle and then it is on to the consequences of the definitions. Several obvious identities are immediately presented with proofs, reinforcing the functional approach to trigonometry, as well as introducing the concept of proof. After graphing and additional proofs of identities, the inverse functions are defined. Only then does right angle trigonometry make an appearance. The book closes with complex numbers, polar curves, and conic sections, with much of it being labeled as optional.
As is the case with books of this type, the majority of the problems are standard issue. However, some of them show a great deal of creativity. For example, if you wish to understand the path of Luke Skywalker's fighter as it attacks the Death Star, turn to page 207. And if you need to know how far Mr. T. must throw his grappling hook to catch the top of the building so that he can climb up and stomp the bad guys, turn to page 208. Such problems add spice to the text that will delight all readers with a touch of youth in their hearts.
All chapters end with a list of chapter objectives, key terms, summary problems, and an application for further study. There is an occasional historical note about certain topics and solutions to all odd problems appear at the back of the book. A calculator is required to do the majority of computational style problems.
There are some areas that are poorly done. The inverse trigonometric functions are poorly presented as the restricted graphs of the functions appear after the definitions. It would have been much clearer if the presentation had been more simultaneous. In the preface a technique called framing is introduced, being described as innovative and unique. Actually, it is nothing that the typical teacher of this material will fail to recognize. The taking of one cycle of the function and repeating it after suitable alterations is a standard way of presenting the periodic nature of trigonometry .
However, these weaknesses are in no way fatal, and this book is an excellent option for anyone looking for a textbook of trigonometry with the right mix of functions, proofs, and applications to everyday situations.
There is additional material for this book:

. An answer book for all problems;
. EXPTEST Question bank for IBM compatible computers;
. Instructor's manual;
. Solutions and study guide;
. Trigpak, a computerized tutorial for IBM compatible computers.
