Product Description
In this riveting collection, published for the first time, we follow Harry S. Truman and Dean Acheson, two giants of the post–World War II period, as they move from an official relationship to one of candor, humor, and personal expression. Together they were primarily responsible for the Marshall Plan and NATO, among other world-shaping initiatives. And in these letters, spanning the years from when both were newly out of office until Acheson’s death at the age of seventy-eight, we find them sharing the often surprising and always illuminating opinions, ideas, and feelings that the strictures of their offices had previously kept them from revealing.

Adapting easily to their private lives, they nonetheless felt a powerful need to keep in touch as they viewed with dismay what they considered to be the Eisenhower administration’s fumbling of foreign affairs, the impact of Joseph McCarthy, John Foster Dulles’s foreign policy, and the threat of massive nuclear retaliation. Adlai Stevenson’s poor campaign of 1956, Eisenhower’s second-term mishaps, family events, speaking engagements, and Truman’s difficulties writing his memoirs are all fodder for their conversations. In 1960 their skeptical stance toward John F. Kennedy (and his father's influence) turned them toward Lyndon Johnson. After Kennedy won they discussed Acheson’s reluctant involvement in the Cuban missile crisis, his missions to de Gaulle and Prime Minister Macmillan, and the Allied position in Berlin.

Unbuttoned, careless of language, unburdened by political ambition or vanity, Truman and Acheson show their own characters and loyalty to each other on every page. Truman, a Missouri farmer with the unpolished but sharp intellect of the largely self-educated man, clearly understands that in Acheson he has a friend with a rare gift for providing unhesitant and truthful counsel. Acheson, well-educated, urbane, and well-off, understands which traits in Truman’s complex character to love and admire and when to admonish, instruct, and tease him. Both men share a deep and abiding patriotism, a quality that truly stands out in today’s world.

A remarkable book that brings to light the very human side of two of the most important statesmen of the twentieth century.

Product Description

On June 19, 1953, Harry Truman got up early, packed the trunk of his Chrysler New Yorker, and did something no other former president has done before or since: he hit the road. No Secret Service protection. No traveling press. Just Harry and his childhood sweetheart Bess, off to visit old friends, take in a Broadway play, celebrate their wedding anniversary in the Big Apple, and blow a bit of the money he’d just received to write his memoirs. Hopefully incognito.

In this lively history, author Matthew Algeo meticulously details how Truman’s plan to blend in went wonderfully awry. Fellow diners, bellhops, cabbies, squealing teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention, and one very by-the-book Pennsylvania state trooper--all unknowingly conspired to blow his cover. Algeo revisits the Trumans’ route, staying at the same hotels and eating at the same diners, and takes readers on brief detours into topics such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By the end of the 2,500-mile journey, you will have a new and heartfelt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president.

5-0 out of 5 stars WILD ABOUT HARRY !!
If you're a fan of Harry Truman like I am, this is a wonderful and heartwarming story about a great president who was not appreciated till after he left office. He could not fathom just how well-thought of he was until this road trip, taken only 5-6 months after he left office.Mr. Algeo undertook this same route and went above and beyond "research", to get a true sense of the trip. Mr. Algeo made me feel I was in the back seat with Harry and Bess. Also appreciated, was Mr. Algeo's weaving of history, prior to and that of the time the trip took place in 1953, as well as the present day and what became of the places and people the Trumans encountered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn history!
I really enjoyed this one - had trouble putting it down. The author does a great job of mixing in historical odds and ends.Too bad we can't learn more about history in this way - I suspect more people would be interested and retain information!

5-0 out of 5 stars Harry's Adventure Was Excellent
This is a keeper I'll turn to for light reading. It was as much fun as Brinkley's "Washington Goes to War," and a fun addition to Halberstam's "The Fifties." (I bought 4 additional copies for my friends.)

Product Description
The life of Harry S. Truman is one of the greatest of American stories, filled with vivid characters -- Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Wallace Truman, George Marshall, Joe McCarthy, and Dean Acheson -- and dramatic events. In this riveting biography, acclaimed historian David McCullough not only captures the man -- a more complex, informed, and determined man than ever before imagined -- but also the turbulent times in which he rose, boldly, to meet unprecedented challenges. The last president to serve as a living link between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, Truman's story spans the raw world of the Missouri frontier, World War I, the powerful Pendergast machine of Kansas City, the legendary Whistle-Stop Campaign of 1948, and the decisions to drop the atomic bomb, confront Stalin at Potsdam, send troops to Korea, and fire General MacArthur. Drawing on newly discovered archival material and extensive interviews with Truman's own family, friends, and Washington colleagues, McCullough tells the deeply moving story of the seemingly ordinary "man from Missouri" who was perhaps the most courageous president in our history.Amazon.com Review
This warm biography of Harry Truman is both an historical evaluationof his presidency and a paean to the man's rock-solid American values. Trumanwas a compromise candidate for vice president, almost an accidental presidentafter Roosevelt's death 12 weeks into his fourth term. Truman's stunningcome-from-behind victory in the 1948 election showed how his personalqualities of integrity and straightforwardness were appreciated by ordinaryAmericans, perhaps, as McCullough notes, because he was one himself. Hispresidency was dominated by enormously controversial issues: he dropped theatomic bomb on Japan, established anti-Communism as the bedrock of Americanforeign policy, and sent U.S. troops into the Korean War. In this winner ofthe 1993 Pulitzer Prize, McCullough argues that history has validated most ofTruman's war-time and Cold War decisions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Writing, a great read regarding a greater man
This is the largest, yet best book, I have ever read. McCullough's biography reads more like a novel and keeps you hooked from page 1- 992. I recommend this book to anyone interested in early 20th century American history or presidential history. I love this book and feel in love with Truman that when he dies I almost cried.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truman
I received the audiobook in excellent condition and very quickly.( However, I did not realize it was abridged and I was looking for an unabridged cd set.)

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing and Epic Work
I was originally a little intimidated by this book due to its size (about 1,000 pages), but I bought it after seeing so many glowing reviews of it.

I absolutely loved this book. It really is an extensive biography of the 33rd President of the United States. It starts out with Truman's grandparent's move to Missouri, tracks his life through childhood, his service in the Army during World War I, and then his return to Missouri and his involvement in Jackson County politics and the powerful Pendergast political machine. Truman is then elected to the U.S. Senate and explains his career there including the Truman Commission. It covers the election of 1944 and his brief stint as vice president.

The best part of the book, and probably the reason is exists at all, is his presidency. Truman was a man who was vice president when Franklin Roosevelt was in the White House. His death was shocking to the nation, even though his failing health made it inevitable. Truman suddenly found himself with the weight of the world on his shoulders and the burden of the presidency itself. Throughout his presidency, the book looks at major decisions and events during that period. This includes the Potsdam Conference, the use of atomic weapons against Japan that ended World War II, the aid to Greece and Turkey as part of containment, the Marshall Plan, the decision to recognize the State of Israel, when he sent troops to Korea, his decision to nationalize the steel industry amidst an impending strike, among others. It covers the election of 1948 when Truman set off on his famous Whistle Stop tour of the country and his surprise defeat of Dewey. The final part of the book covers his post-presidency when he returned to Missouri to live out the rest of his years.

The book really is almost like an epic novel of a man's life. A true American journey. The size of the book might be daunting to some, but for me it was a real page-turner. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truman
Limited on time? Eye sight or mobility issues? Truman by David McCullough on disc is a super way to take in his work. A must read . . .or hear. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truman Bio a Hit
I bought this Truman biography for my 94-year-od mother-in-law at her request. And she read it immediately after reading another Truman biography that I also bought for her (and thank goodness received before this bio) by his daughter Margaret. As my mother-in-law had already concluded from Margaret's book that Truman was a great man because of his love for his wife and daughter, she was willing to stick out reading this "heavy" (and by that she meant weight not content) book - loving every minute of it. The delivery was timely. And the book arrived in very good shape. All in all, a very successful purchase. ... Read more

Product Description
Autumn 1948–the final tense days of the Presidential campaign between incumbent Harry S Truman and Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey. As Truman prepares for a visit to Chicago, Tribune police reporter Steve “Snap” Malek is warned of a plan by an anti-Semitic group to assassinate the President because of his recognition of the new state of Israel.

This hate group pressures Malek to give them publicity in the Tribune. He demurs, and the menacing organization, calling itself The New Reich, begins killing Chicagoans, one a day, including a policeman and a fireman. They threaten to kill more unless Malek writes about them, although their spokesman, contacting the reporter by phone, refuses his request for an in-person interview.

Malek begins his dogged hunt for the people behind The New Reich, along the way meeting maverick automaker Preston Tucker and getting a chance to drive his revolutionary new car. Finally, one week before the election, Truman arrives in Chicago for a parade, and Malek comes face-to-face with the would-be assassin, laying his own life on the line in a desperate attempt to stifle the deadly plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating compilation with historic insight
As World War II slowly fades into history, old veterans are now giving their tales a final telling. Memoirs, books and final recollections fill the bookstores looking back on that great event that so marked and divided the world.

In the midst of such a plethora of material on World War II, there is little talk on its aftermath. Indeed it might be argued that what happened immediately after the surrender of the Axis powers shaped world history almost as much as the dramatic event itself.

Covering this fascinating time, Prof. Gregory W. Sand provides insight and historic perspective. As part of the Contributions to the Study of World History series, the book thrusts the reader into an end-of-the-war scenario in much the same way as President Truman was driven upon Roosevelt's death.

It becomes clear that the conflict's aftermath was not just the end of a war but the beginning of another one. With extensive headnotes, Prof. Sand traces the major concerns of the two victorious powers as they headed toward a series of crises that eventually gave rise to the Cold War.

Poland, Italy's Venezia Guilia, and the Austrian occupation were all matters that immediately threatened world peace. In the power vacuum that followed the Allied victory, the letters document the perfidious actions of Stalin who shamelessly exploited postwar chaos to build an "Iron Curtain" right down the middle of Europe.
Prof. Sand weaves together the threads of the two leaders' lives as he follows their postwar careers. Their friendship was especially cemented by their meeting at Fulton, Missouri, where Churchill would deliver his famed "Iron Curtain" speech introduced by President Truman. With Churchill's second premiership, their official correspondence resumed and with it all the problems raised by the Cold War.
While the book is excellent historical resource, the personal aspect cannot be divorced from the letters. More than just a political alliance, the book records an evolving friendship. What began as official dispatches with few personal references soon became formal correspondence addressed to "Mr. President" and "Mr. Prime Minister." This would later become the more intimate "My dear Sir Winston," and "My dear Harry." In a similar way, both men in the later years would send their best regards to the other's spouse and children and extend thoughtful courtesies.

Prof. Sand, Adjunct Professor of History at the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy, has provided this first full scholarly edition of the Churchill-Truman correspondence which will be an excellent chronicle of the aftermath of the war and will aid students in understanding this important period of world history. In documenting Stalin's brash post-war politics, it is a lesson in perfidy. By describing the eventual Anglo-American response, it is a confirmation that weakness has its terrible consequence and real peace can only bought through strength.

Product Description
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman are two men whose backgrounds were very dissimilar but whose achievements proved to be roughly comparable--both became President of the United States. It is, for example, ironic that the wealthy Roosevelt is best known for his social programs and that Truman, who came from modest circumstances in the Middle West, achieved his greatest success in foreign affairs. This study demonstrates, with some flair, the variety and the breadth of the American experience and provides, in part, a credible basis for the existence of "an American Dream." ... Read more

Parry-Giles challenges the scholarly assumption that the rhetorical presidency refers to presidential messages delivered from the bully pulpit only.
