Editorial Review

Product Description
Julia Clancy-Smith's unprecedented study brings us a remarkable view of North African history from the perspective of the North Africans themselves. Focusing on the religious beliefs and political actions of Muslim elites and their followers in Algeria and Tunisia, she provides a richly detailed analysis of resistance and accommodation to colonial rule.
Clancy-Smith demonstrates the continuities between the eras of Turkish and French rule as well as the importance of regional ties among elite families in defining Saharan political cultures. She rejects the position that Algerians and Tunisians were invariably victims of western colonial aggression, arguing instead that Muslim notables understood the outside world and were quite capable of manipulating the massive changes occurring around them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent history of Algeria and Tunisia
Clancy-Smith brings to life North African history in this brilliantly written piece that is not over-burdened with statistics but instead conveys the intricacies of the Arab culture and leaves no surprise in the reader's mind as to why the Algerians did not want to be ruled by the French, men of a completly different culture.

My only regret in giving this book is a 10 is that I wish it would have dealt more with the colonial experience in Algiers, Oran and Constantine and with the life of the pied noirs. However, doing this most likely was not the intent of the author, therefore I cannot downgrade the book too much ... Tunisia's climate is temperate in the north, with mild rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The south of the country is desert. The terrain in the north is mountainous, which, moving south, gives way to a hot, dry central plain. The south is semiarid, and merges into the Sahara. A series of salt lakes, known as chotts or shatts, lie in an east-west line at the northern edge of the Sahara, extending from the Gulf of Gabes into Algeria. The lowest point is Shatt al Gharsah, at -17 m (55.8 ft), and the highest is Jebel ech Chambi, at 1,544 metres (5,066 ft). source: Institut National de la Statistique - Tunisie Tunisia possesses petroleum, phosphates, iron ore, lead, zinc, salt and arable land. 3,850 km² of land is irrigated in Tunisia. Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Tunisia," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Tunisia in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Tunisia when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Tunisia, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sedjenane is a town in northern Tunisia, on the railway line to Mateur and the port of Bizerta. The town became of strategic importance during the Allied Invasion of North Africa in World War Two. Following the initial landings of Operation Torch, the Allied rush for Tunis was halted by German paratroops (operating in the ground role) in the hills east of the town in November 1942. Troops of the 8th Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were ambushed as they advanced on the road through the hills on November 29 1942 and their wrecked Universal Carriers in No man's land became a grim symbol of the ensuing stalemate to Allied troops over the following several months of the Tunisian Campaign. These dominant hills, known to the Allies, as 'Green Hill', 'Baldy' and 'Sugarloaf' were a barrier to further Allied advances in the north through to February 1943. ... Read more
