Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Tunisia," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Tunisia in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Tunisia when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Tunisia, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Mercenary War (c.240 BC) also called the Libyan War and the Truceless War by Polybius was an uprising of mercenary armies formerly employed by Carthage, backed by Libyan settlements revolting against Carthaginian control. The war began as a dispute over the payment of money owed the mercenaries between the mercenary armies who fought the First Punic War on Carthage's behalf, and a destitute Carthage, which had lost most of its wealth due to the indemnities imposed by Rome as part of the peace treaty. The dispute grew until the mercenaries seized Tunis by force of arms, and directly threatened Carthage, which then capitulated to the mercenaries demands. The conflict would have ended there, had not two of the mercenary commanders, Spendius and Mathos, persuaded the Libyan conscripts in the army to accept their leadership, and then convinced them that Carthage would exact vengeance for their part in the revolt once the foreign mercenaries were paid and sent home. They also persuaded the combined mercenary armies to revolt against Carthage, and various Libyan towns and cities to back the revolt. What had been a hotly contested "labour dispute" exploded into a full-scale revolt. Heavily outmatched in terms of troops, money, and supplies, an unprepared Carthage fared poorly in the initial engagements of the war, especially under the generalship of Hanno the Great. Hamilcar Barca, general from the campaigns in Sicily, was given supreme command, and eventually defeated the rebels in 237 BC. In 241 BC the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage came to an end with Carthaginian defeat. As part of the terms of the treaty, Rome demanded that Carthage give up "all islands lying between Sicily an...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=869748 ... Read more

Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 28. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The franc (French, Arabic: ) was the currency of Tunisia between 1891 and 1958. It was divided into 100 centimes () and was equivalent to the French franc. The franc replaced the rial in 1891 at the rate of 1 rial = 60 centimes. It consisted of both coins and banknotes produced specifically for Tunisia, although early banknotes were Algerian issues overstamped with "Tunisie". The franc was replaced in 1960 by the dinar at a rate of 1000 francs = 1 dinar, the dinar having been established as the unit of account in 1958. The first coins denominated in francs were issued in 1887, before the franc became the currency of Tunisia. These were gold 25 rial coins which were also marked "15 F" to indicate their value in French francs. In 1891, bronze 1, 2, 5 and 10 centimes, silver 50 centimes, 1 and 2 francs, and gold 10 and 20 francs were introduced, all equal in size and composition to the corresponding French coins. The 1 and 2 centimes were only issued that year. In 1918, holed, nickel-bronze 5, 10 and 25 centimes were introduced, followed, in 1921, by aluminium-bronze 50 centimes, 1 and 2 francs and silver 10 and 20 francs in 1930. Again, these coins matched the French coins in size and composition. However, in 1934, silver 5 francs coins were introduced, despite the French 5 francs being made of nickel. As in France, zinc 10 and 20 centimes coins were introduced during the Second World War with silver coins discontinued. Production of coins below 5 francs ceased in 1945, with an aluminium-bronze 5 francs introduced in 1946, followed ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3877717 ... Read more

Product Description
Julia Clancy-Smith's unprecedented study brings us a remarkable view of North African history from the perspective of the North Africans themselves. Focusing on the religious beliefs and political actions of Muslim elites and their followers in Algeria and Tunisia, she provides a richly detailed analysis of resistance and accommodation to colonial rule.
Clancy-Smith demonstrates the continuities between the eras of Turkish and French rule as well as the importance of regional ties among elite families in defining Saharan political cultures. She rejects the position that Algerians and Tunisians were invariably victims of western colonial aggression, arguing instead that Muslim notables understood the outside world and were quite capable of manipulating the massive changes occurring around them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent history of Algeria and Tunisia
Clancy-Smith brings to life North African history in this brilliantly written piece that is not over-burdened with statistics but instead conveys the intricacies of the Arab culture and leaves no surprise in the reader's mind as to why the Algerians did not want to be ruled by the French, men of a completly different culture.

My only regret in giving this book is a 10 is that I wish it would have dealt more with the colonial experience in Algiers, Oran and Constantine and with the life of the pied noirs. However, doing this most likely was not the intent of the author, therefore I cannot downgrade the book too much ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mediterranean Winter
What an insightful and wonderful travel log besides having an understanding of the areas and the politics involved.Read it before traveling to these places.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good read.
This book is, mostly, based on Kaplan's earliest travels through the mediterranean with additional comments and commentary from his subsequent experiences in the area. It is interesting to see how the author evolved into the type of writer he is now and how his travels inspire his interest in learning more about the history, architecture and literature connected to a given area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Jaunt Through Antiquity
This is a delightful piece of travel writing by one of the genre's masters as he wanders through some of the most history-rich real estate in the world.Covering both sides of the Mediterranean --in winter, no less -- Kaplan weaves into his narrative the historical heritage and significance of each place he visits. At each stop he shares his personal impressions, as well. One of the most endearing qualities of this book is the tribute he pays to other travel writers who covered the same ground over the years, ranging from the Homeric era to modern day.For me, the book ended perfectly, as Kaplan concludes his trip at the Greece home of Patrick Leigh Fermor, the legendary travel writer and war hero, whose books chronicling his walk across Europe as the storm clouds of WWII were gathering, remain travel writing classics.Kaplan has paid his dues as a journalist, with his years of visiting mostly third world countries, staying in ratty hotel rooms, surviving on boiled eggs, and spending endless and boring hours on buses to nowhere. This has given him rare insights into our world and its people -- insights he generously shares with us.It's like taking a trip with a master traveler.A masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Pleasure on a Lazy Sunday
One of Kaplan's most recent works is an excellent read, suitable for a lazy Sunday morning when one is noshing on a bagel and daydreaming about traveling the southern 'fringe' of Europe.

The prose is captivating and lyrical, particularly in Tunisia and Dalmatia. It is also a fascinating look at the development of the man as he makes his leap from 'travel writer' to 'current events' writer and journo.

One point in the book stands out in my mind. This is Kaplan's encounter with a West-hating North African, who nonetheless comes to develop a wary friendship with the author.Over time, Kaplan's aquiaintance grows out of his radicalism and acquires a middle-class lifestyle, with a job and a mortgage.(Which development followed the other is left up to the reader to decide.)

I only caution that those who approach Kaplan's work from his hard-hitting current events books might be slightly let down with this effort. One can certainly see the beginnings of the memes and keen insights that Kaplan sprinkles liberally throughout his other work. However, this is a book about history and the 'deeper' pleasure of travel, not a meditation on the state of things to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful travel writing based on extensive historical research!
As in "Balkan Ghosts," Kaplan writes with great clarity and intelligence, weaving a fine travel narrative founded on extensive historical research. He writes with a unique and creative eye, and tends to focus on important yet little-known locales. He philosophizes quite a bit, but it is an intriguing, pleasurable philosophy. The following quote from his section on Greece crystallizes for me the special appeal of this type of writing, "...travel writing, rather than a low-rent occupation for the Sunday supplements, could also be a means to explore art, history, literature, and statecraft..." Precisely! Bravo, Kaplan!

Excerpt: Tunisia has had a Jewish minority since Roman times. In 1948 the Jewish population was an estimated 105,000, but by 1967 most Tunisian Jews had left the country for France and Israel, and the population had shrunk to 20,000. As of 2004 an estimated 1,500 still remain, particularly on the island of Djerba (noted for its synagogues), comprising the country's largest indigenous religious minority. Tunisian Jews are part of the Maghrebim A tradition among the descendants of the first Jewish settlers were that their ancestors settled in that part of North Africa long before the destruction of the First Temple in the 6th century BCE. Though this is unfounded, the presence of Jews there at the appearance of Christianity is attested by the ruins of an ancient Jewish synagogue (dating back to the 3rd-5th century CE) found by the French captain Ernest De Prudhomme in his Hammam-Lif residence in 1883. After the dissolution of the Jewish state a great number of Jews were sent by Titus to Mauretania, and many of them settled in Tunis. These settlers were engaged in agriculture, cattle-raising, and trade. They were divided into clans, or tribes, governed by their respective heads, and had to pay the Romans a capitation tax of 2 shekels. Under the dominion of the Romans and (after 429) of the fairly tolerant Vandals, the Jewish inhabitants of Tunis increased and prospered to such a degree that African Church councils deemed it necessary to enact restrictive laws against them. After the overthrow of the Vandals by Belisarius in 534, Justinian I issued his edict of persecution, in which the Jews were classed with the Arians and heathens. In the seventh century the Jewish population was largely augmented by Spanish immigrants, who, fleeing from the persecutio... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1935154 ... Read more

Product Description
Containing an updated chronology, additional entries, and an enlarged bibliography, this second edition of the "Historical Dictionary of Tunisia" offers interested historians the information they need for continued research into this unique African nation. As a link between Arab and African worlds and the European community, this small country has managed to maintain a stable position in the ever-shifting North African political climate under the sure leadership of Habib Bourguiba and Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. The "Dictionary" focuses primarily on the period from the introduction of Islam in the seventh century A.D. to the present, but the inclusion of materials from the Carthagian and Roman eras acknowledges the area's rich pre-Islamic heritage. Each entry of the original edition has been reviewed to ensure accuracy and, where appropriate, revised to take the most recent scholarship and statistical data into account. These updates are supplemented by many new entries, so that the dictionary contains the most up-to-date information available on such aspects of contemporary Tunisia as its education system, economy, relations with other countries, social structure, and tourist industry. An extensive bibliography, arranged chronologically and topically, lists European-language books and periodicals on Tunisia. Contains a chronology, maps, and list of rulers from 800-1996. This edition is a timely, comprehensive and definitive reference work on a country that has, for centuries, stood at the crossroads of European and Islamic worlds. Reviews of the previous edition: "A valuable addition to the comparatively small collection of reference works about Tunisia..This is a useful, valuable and needed addition..." --CHOICE "...highly recommended for university and research collections." --AFRICAN STUDIES REVIEW "This ... volume is a gold mine for the general and historically oriented reader or researcher on Tunisia." --MESA BULLETIN ...
