Dictionary yes - Phrasebook NO
I purchased this book with the idea that it would contain many phrases to use while traveling in Turkey.There are very few.My travel guide contains many more phrases and I'm certain a Collins dictionary would have short phrases next to each term.

While I don't disagree with the quality of the cover and the dictionary as described by other reviewers (though I do expect short phrases next to terms), this is inadequate as a phrasebook.

Outstanding (and Durable)
My wife learned basic Turkish using tapes and books over a 6 month period in preparation for 3 months of traveling in Turkey. Her achieved skills were pretty impressive in day to day usage.

THIS is the dictionary/phrase book that she carried around everywhere, to look up words andrefresh her memory. She still carries it around to review with in quiet moments. No other pocket dictionary we looked at or carries had the portability, utility, and durability of this slim but relatively comprehensive volume.

The quality and accuracy of the book is very good. However the book, binding, cover, etc are absolutely indestructible. For the very low price of this book, this is an incredible value.I have developed a lot of respect for a publisher that would create such a physically durable product at such a price.

Much more than a phrasebook
I am taking Turkish at university. What I really like about this book is that it gives, in addition to useful phrases, an overview of the grammar (VERY important and very unusual in a phrasebook), a Turkish/English and English/Turkish Dictionary (with a lot more words than found in the typical phrasebook), and tables of things like numbers, months, etc.

If you're heading for Turkey (a travel destination I highly recommend) or studying the language, this is a terrific pocket reference (and very inexpensive!).

interesting and useful even if you skip the technical parts
I borrowed this book and probably cannot afford to buy it as I had planned to, but it is a very good book for someone who has already learned Turkish.I learned Turkish in Turkey speaking it and have big gaps in my knowledge, especially of complicated sentence construction.I did not read all of the technical linguistic descriptions in the book but instead read all of the examples, and learned a bunch.It also helped me translate some Ottoman passages into English.
Kornfilt gives constructions in gradients of possibility.Sentences offered are marked as accepted by all/most/some/few/no speakers, and for many unacceptable constructions she offers logical explanations for why they are unacceptable.The back of the book has an extensive food and cooking glossary I enjoyed very much.The family relationship glossary was unfortunately missing some colloquial words, and there were some typos in the second half of the book, but these never affected the meaning of the lesson being taught, and overall I wish I had never returned the book to the library which is (alas) far away in a school from which I recently graduated.

Not what you might think!
Anyone contemplating purchasing this book, especially given the extradordinarily high price, should be well aware of what it is and, most particularly, what it is not:It is essentially a detailed, filled out "questionaire" applied to a series of languages to produce "grammars" for comparative purposes; this volume deals with the Turkish-related responses to the questionaire.It is thus intended to enable professional "linguists" (i.e, not polyglots but rather practitioners of modern theoretical linguistics) to compare and contrast various aspects of languages from widely differing families.

It is emphatically not intended to help a person learn to speak, read, or understand Turkish, and will prove of little help to someone with such goals.In fact, despite its volume, it in fact is rather thin in terms of the information it provides.Although it has an index, looking up grammatical points in it will be difficult for most people, and the information imparted is usually quite limited.Ms. Kornfilt may indeed have a good knowledge of Turkish, but this book is aimed at a very narrow audience with very specialized interests, which in almost all cases deal with issues of comparative linguistic structures rather than the Turkish language per se.This is not a criticism of the book, but merely a warning so that the potential purchaser knows what he/she will get.

Intermediate to advanced students of the Turkish language seeking a detailed reference grammer intended to explain the fine points of the language should give careful consideration to the excellent "Turkish Grammar" of Geoffrey Lewis, also available thorugh Amazon.While also expensive, it costs only a quarter of what this book does, and will be much more useful for the average person.

It is unneccessarily long and very [pricey] for an ordinary reader. It contains lots of repetitions. It could have been much shorter. I don't think it is worth [$]!!

An up-to-date description of Turkish
Jaklin Kornfilt is the most influencial linguist whose work particularlyfocuses on Turkish. The book covers morphology, syntax and the phonology ofthe language. Turkish morphosyntax dominates the bulk of the book, leavingvery little focus on the phonetic and phonological structure of thelanguage, probably due to the fact that Kornfilt is a syntactician. Ingeneral, the topics are, for the most part, covered in light of the recentdevelopments in the linguistic theory. The treatment of the Turkish copularsystem is very interesting but a little confusing at the same time. Good for travelling but not good for every day translation.
This book is good if you're looking for a travel translator but not good if you're looking for an every day dictionary/translator.

I bought it to help with everyday conversation tips and only found it useful for mealtime conversation- otherwise, it's not great.But, it would be the perfect translator for a trip to Turkey as a tourist.Great little phrases, great descriptions and very clearly laid out.

Practical Small Book
I am currently learning Turkish, and I have bought various reading material. This book is very practical as it is essentially a travel dictionary with a helpful set of phrases and sentences suitable for people who travel to Turkey or other regions that speak Turkish.
I was going to give this 5 stars because it's a very compacted book with lots of good information. I eventually gave it just 4 stars because it's not exactly a complete dictionary, and I feel that it shouldn't have titled itself that way because it can be somewhat misleading; at least that's how I felt. It is more of a travel dictionary.
Bottom line:
This is a reference book, and might I add a very helpful one for those who want all the basics summed up nicely in addition with every day words and conversation phrases yet doesn't want that much learning per say. However, it is not a real dictionary so if you are looking for a solid Turkish-English, English-Turkish dictionary, might I suggest the Redhouse dictionary series (made in Turkey), which I also bought. If you intend to really teach yourself, this book will not suffice.

Excellent Little Book
This is an excellent little book with a succinct and interesting summary of Turkish grammar (no exercises, just a complete review of the basics).It has an extremely useful bi-lingual dictionary of common everyday words and terms (some of which I found more easily here as opposed to in a larger Turkish dictionary).The last half of the book consists of a Turkish Phrasebook divided into topics of interest for quick reference, such as Professions, Family Matters, Directions, Sightseeing, Weather, etc. ... decent pocket dictionary
As with all Langenscheidt dictionaries, this one is good. It's easy to use, durable, and reflects accurate modern usage (as far as I can tell). This one in particular, however, is on the lean side. Compared to the pocket German-English dictionary this seems to have far fewer entries and isn't even suitable for a first-year student of Turkish.

Great for vacation, not as great for the classroom. So go ahead and get this to carry around, but look for a larger desk reference to back it up.

New Standard Dictionary Turkish-Langenscheidt
I was trying to translate small text from a Turk--found it impossible with this dictionary, the phrases and words were not in this dictionary.

A reference
Plastic covers are quite stiff and make initial use of pages near them difficult.

Blue headwords are a nice touch.

It is a handy reference for its size.The choice of what words NOT to include is puzzling at times, as a review of countries will show.

All in all a good value for the money and size.

Turkce
This has more info than the small version. I think it's a little bit large for packing around Istanbul but it's great for having on hand. I carry the small one in my fast pack and have this one back in the hotel. I have tried a few other dictionaries and prefer this brand.

Deserves to be the standard reference in English for anyone interested in this language family
This book is like a big piece of candy for anyone interested in the Turkic languages. Routledge's Language Family Descriptions series offers single-chapter summaries of the grammars and lexicons of the major members of a family, and their Turkic volume published in 1998 continues the tradition with strong contributions from the leading Turkologists of our time.

There are six chapters on the family as a whole: The Speakers of Turkic Languages (Hendrik Boeschoten), The Turkic Peoples: A Historical Sketch (Peter B. Golden), The Structure of Turkic (Lars Johanson), The Reconstruction of Proto-Turkic and the Genetic Question (Andras Rona-Tas), The History of Turkic (Lars Johanson) and Turkic Writing SYstems (Andras Rona-Tas). The contributions of Johanson and Andras-Rona Tas are extremely helpful for understanding the isoglosses which divide the Turkic family into its various subfamilies, and they give a good overview of the controversies on the reconstruction of proto-languages.

Then there are single chapters on each language or, in a few cases, collections of unstandardized dialects. These are Old Turkic (Marcel Erdal), Middle Kipchak (Arpad Berta), Chaghatay (Hendrik Boeschoten and Marc Vandamme), Ottoman Turkish (Celia Kerslake), Turkish (Eva A. Csato and Lars Johanson), Turkish dialects (Bernt Brendemoen), Azerbaijanian (Claus Schonig), Turkmen (Schonig), Turkic languages of Iran (Gerhard Doerfer), Tatar and Bashkir (Berta), West Kipchak languages (Berta), Kazakh and Karakalpak (Mark Kirchner), Nogay (Eva A. There's also a chapter on the Turkish language reform written by Bernt Brendemoen, though I feel that Geoffrey Lewis' The Turkish Language Reform: A Catastrophic Success is the best popular introduction to the affair. I should also note that Marcel Erdal's presentation of Old Turkic is vastly expanded in his later monograph A Grammar of Old Turkic (Amsterdam: Brill, 2004).

My only complaint about this delightful reference is that a number of typos are present, especially in Arpad Berta's contribution on Tatar and Bashkir. These pose little problem for those with some previous experience with the Turkic languages, but may confuse many readers. Shame on Routledge for not correcting these even in the paperback reprint of 2006. It might be just me, but . . .
Teach Yourself Turkish Conversation (3CDs + Guide) (TY: Conversation)[I didn't like this course very much and gave it away after doing part of the first CD. I bought it on the strength of it being a TY course, and these are normally very good. I thought the English speaker sounded as though they were speaking to children (even though I'd never speak to children like that!) It really got on my nerves! There was also far too much music in between sections, padding out the course. I'm not an absolute beginner in Turkish but also not that advanced either and I thought listening to conversation would help me become more fluent.

I would also recommend the Pimsleur Turkish courses but beware, Amazon are very misleading with these and keep recommending you buy two together when, in fact, the longer courses incorporate the shorter ones, something which the publishers make clear.

Teach Yourself Turkish (book & CD) is good too. It gives more information, but less listening practice than Pimsleur.

Immediate Results
I needed a quick introduction into Turkish after we hired a native Turkish speaker with very limited English language skills. As a manager, I needed to be able to start communicating right away. Within 24 hours of buying this 3-cd set, I was able to start talking with my new employee and training her in her job.

This product, combined with a decent dictionary, is a perfect quick intro to the langugae. It is not for the aspiring "Turkish scholar" however, as vocab and grammar are limited. I concur with the previous review. The typos are really baffling, and that's what keeps me from giving this product five stars.

A good supplement
The other reviewer is right in that the accompanying booklet contains baffling superscripts that are clearly misprints. Even the author's name on the cover is afflicted with this error, so hopefully TY will remedy this quickly on the next batch.

Still, once I got past the frustration of the book, I found this set to be a very useful supplement to your Turkish studies. I would not use this alone, but in conjunction with a text (such as the very good TY Beg. Turkish) these 10 conversations made up of multiple parts will be very helpful in reinforcing basic concepts and core vocabulary. All for around $20, it's a pretty good deal and a lot of audio for the money.

With a little bit of effort or exposure to another text, you can easily see what the mistake in the text is meant to be, and just correct it with a pencil. That's what I did and the typo problem doesn't really bother me any longer. Still, it is a serious error on the part of the publisher, but one that shouldn't discourage you from using the very useful audio on these 3 CDs. ... Read more

Useless CD
Any "Learn X language in a day" product has a pretty low bar. After all, languages take time to learn. This is why I gave this CD two stars rather than one. But it's certainly possible to pick up some phrases in a short time period.

That being said, if you want to learn a little Turkish before you travel, this is NOT the product for you. The CD is a staged conversation between a British man who already knows a few words in Turkish and a Turkish woman who is teaching him 50 words on their flight to Istanbul. The CD starts out on the wrong foot by breezing through the very first basic words you want to learn- like hello, how are you, etc. because the British man already knows them. To get 50 words in, there's very little repetition or sometimes none at all (nothing like you'd find on a Pimsleur or other course). It's very fast paced. The teacher does return to some of the prior material from time to time, but the repetition is messed up by the British man's mistakes. This is one of my biggest gripes.

For me, it's easier to understand the British man's pronunciation of the words. But the course moves quickly, and when the Brit messes up the words, it gets confusing. The course would be so much better if they dropped the cheesy airplane setting and just tried to teach you the language. Then there'd be no need for the British guy to insert mistakes, and there'd be more time to drill you on the key words and phrases so you can remember them.

After two (painful) listens to the CD, I have very little recollection of the phrases on it. I can't bring myself to listen to it again. It also comes with a short pamphlet that gives the words and phrases used on the CD. But if you want a phrasebook, I'd recommend that you buy the Rough Guide to Turkish phrasebook.

not for beginners
Maybe the problem is simply that the book is mislabelled -- it says it is for beginners or intermediate.

All I can say is, it is way too hard for beginners. Maybe it is good for intermediate, but I'm not in a position to know.

If you are looking for a good start for a beginner, 'Getting by in Turkish' is a really easy way to pick up a few words and phrases that you can use right away.

Not a good beginner's book.
I purchased this book hoping to gain a better understanding of spoken, conversational Turkish, but was thwarted at every turn. The lessons are poorly structured; each starts with a box of phrases that are not defined or translated, and it is up to you to figure out what they mean. The lessons are arranged according to conversational topic (such as "Greetings" or "Inquiring about someone's age"), and gramatical concepts are interspersed throughout, which makes it difficult to look up how adjectives are treated, for example. The lessons should include a list of all new words/phrases and their definitions. Explanations of gramatical concepts aren't labeled as such and sometimes are confusing.

Vay allah! What a great book!
Turkish people have laughed in astonishment at the phrases and words that I've used after learning them from this book. There are some mistakes in the text but these are easy to notice (mostly typos). What I like most isthe the way the book concentrates on every day conversation. I love all theexpressions of astonishment and especially the space-fillers used by Turkswhen they're thinking about what they're going to say next. I've not seenthose described anywhere else! I thought the speakers on the tape weretalking too quickly too soon but now I've seen some Turkish tv andunderstood a fair amount of what they were saying I've changed my mind.
