The typical undergraduate degree (B.A. Hons.) takes three years to complete in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four years in Scotland. Traditional universities tend to emphasize academic preparation in the arts and sciences, while newer institutions may emphasize more practical studies such as business and the technological professions. The 1980s and 90s brought major changes to higher education in the United Kingdom. Traditionally an elitist system available to very few, the emphasis now is on broadening access and greatly increasing the numbers of students attending higher education. Access to higher education still is largely determined by the "A" Level examinationsspecialized exams in up to four subjects taken at age 18. However, university admissions has opened up in recent years allowing entry to students lacking traditional "A" level entry qualifications as well as to non-traditional students. While in the past, students were not expected to pay tuition or fees and often received full grants for room and board, there has been an increasing emphasis on students sharing a greater share of their university expenses. More emphasis is placed on independent, self-directed study in the United Kingdom than in the United States. Students write more and take fewer exams. Modules often consist of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Degrees are awarded as 1st Class, Upper 2nd Class, Lower 2nd Class, and 3rd Class. Individual modules are usually graded on a percentile basis, with 40-45 a minimal pass (D), and 70 and higher considered very good (A). The academic year runs from September or October to June on the quarter system, although some universities are shifting to a semester system.

Euro Reports Summary 2 markets for around 60%, with an exception of united kingdom, where sales by will beless on the competitive team sports and more on leisure and individual http://www.thesportslife.com/eurorepsum2.htm
Extractions: Germany is the largest EU producer of sporting goods followed by Italy, France and the United Kingdom. The overall supply of sports goods in the EU is still dominated by Nike, adidas and Reebok and here US suppliers are gaining importance. The main suppliers of specialised and high quality sports clothing are Italy, Spain and Portugal. Production of the wide range of specialised sports equipment is controlled by a large number of small manufacturers throughout the EU. Germany and the United Kingdom use a large share of their production for supplying the domestic market, whereas France and Italy are more sizeable exporters. Manufacturers in most EU countries now contract much of their production to lower cost factories in the Far East or Eastern Europe. With the ageing population and consequent increase in leisure time and travel, the emphasis in sports participation will be less on the competitive team sports and more on leisure and individual sports. This development will stimulate the market for outdoor activities (footwear, clothing, rucksacks), golf equipment, fitness goods (in-home trainers, fitness clothing), water sports and snow sports equipment. On the other hand, young people will favour adventurous, alternative, beach, fun and extreme sports

European Media Ownership: Threats On The Landscape united kingdom. s RTL have a 65% stake in Channel 5 (united Business Media IP Ignite(men's lifestyle) and IPC Country and leisure (sports, leisure and hobbies http://www.ifj.org/publications/download/mediaownership/unitedkingdom.html
Extractions: A Survey of who owns what in Europe The key media policy issue in the UK is the content of the draft Communications Bill, published in May 2002, which will drastically liberalise media ownership and regulation in the UK, and make the UK the most liberal country, in terms of media ownership rules, in Europe. One controversial proposal is that restrictions on non-EEA ownership of commercial television will be lifted, so that US-based global media groups could acquire commercial TV channels. The other is the lifting of cross-media ownership restrictions, so that potentially, Rupert Murdoch's UK-based News International could acquire the terrestrial commercial television Channel 5. mid-October 2002 Carlton and Granada announced that they intended to merge. Many commentators thought the decision to offer Rupert Murdoch a stake in terrestrial television was an attempt by the Labour government, and in particular the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to keep Murdoch's substantial press interests supportive of the government. The other controversial proposal in the Bill is to create a monster regulator, OFTEL, which will absorb the functions of five previously separate regulators like the Independent Television Commission (ITC) and the Radio Authority.
