Its actually located on a quiet road on the outskirts of Portsmouth, just waiting to be discovered by anyone who values New Hampshires woodlands and natural resources. The Urban Forestry Center was established in 1976, and was given to the people of New Hampshire through a generous bequest by John Elwyn Stone, a direct descendant of John Langdon , the first governor of the state. Mr. Stones gift consists of 170 acres of field, forest, and saltmarsh, several buildings, and the annual interest income from a trust fund. The property is managed by the Division of Forests and Lands of the Department of Resources and Economic Development. The Center is used as a Tree Farm to demonstrate proper forest management, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, a garden and landscape demonstration site, and as a learning center offering information and programming in community forestry planning, forest management, ecology, tree and plant identification, and wildlife stewardship.

The urban forest consists of all the treed areas in Boston including street and yard trees, woodland areas, and parks. Trees contribute to the well-being of our communities environmentally, socially and economically. For example, urban forests can moderate local climate, filter air pollutants, store storm water and reduce run-off, increase biodiversity and provide wildlife habitat. Trees accent our buildings, define our public and private spaces, and improve our psychological well-being. The Boston Parks and Recreation Department plants public shade trees throughout Boston's 22 neighborhoods. Each street tree signifies the Mayors commitment to a greener Boston. The department plants in the fall and in the spring. Weather rarely makes an 'exact' date, but we use the following planting dates as a general guide: fall (October to December) and spring (March to May). Planting locations are chosen based on resident requests as well as special projects, such as parks, and residential and commercial projects. All street trees are maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department. Our maintenance program includes pruning, disease control, removals, and storm damage repairs.
