I hope to sort out, as much as possible, fact from fiction. The thesis is tentatively titled "William Jenkins, the Private Sector and the Mexican State, 1910-1946," which covers Jenkins' key years as a businessman, but that periodization may change. At the Oaxaca Summer Insitute, I gained advice about archives and also the shaping of my thesis from the following participants: Alan Knight (Oxford), Gil Joseph (Yale), John Hart (Houston), Paul Vanderwood (San Diego State), Josefina Vázquez (Colegio de México), Wm. Beezley (Arizona). I cannot emphasize enough how useful and stimulating the seminar was, and I am surprised that no graduate students from Berkeley have previously attended. Anyone with an interest in Mexican history would find the experience beneficial, not least for the ample contact it affords with two dozen academics and a peer group of 15 students.

    Extractions: Administrative History Preface The following study, which examines one of the most significant decades in the development of the National Park Service, is one of the first in what will be a series of administrative histories of the National Park Service. Initiated by NPS Chief Historian Edwin C. Bearss, the administrative history program will result in studies that will not only be of importance to managers in the Service, but will be of interest to the general student as well. Any study is the result of the combined efforts of a number of people, and this one is no exception. Edwin C. Bearss initiated the program, gave us the project, and was a source of encouragement throughout preparation of the project. Barry Mackintosh, NPS Bureau Historian, provided general administrative oversight of the project. Harry Butowsky, Historian, WASO, supplied us with his study on nomenclature and the supporting documentation for it. Ben Levy, senior historian in the Washington office, helped us to find material on the NPS Advisory Board and shared his insights into the Historic Sites Act of 1935. Gerald Patten, Assistant Manager, and Nan V. Rickey, Chief, Branch of Cultural Resources, Mid-Atlantic/North Atlantic Team, Denver Service Center, provided encouragement for the project and released us from team-related work so that we could work on it.

Theodore Draper, the closest approximation we have to a founding father of scholarly studies in U.S. Communism, and more recently the mainstream arbiter of kosher products in the field, declared recently in the New York Review that Robert Cohen's When the Old Left Was Young responsibly advances the history of the Left. This judgment is made in dramatic contrast to another volume, New Studies in the Politics and Culture of U.S. Communism, edited by Michael E. Brown, Randy Martin, Frank Rosengarten, and George Snedeker-which Draper denounces as a "politically sick" fraud. Its eleven essays, he argues, express the outlook of a lost generation of graying 1960s New Leftists seeking to hustle academic careers while still feigning radical commitment. Their stratagem is to "reconstruct the old Communist Party in their own image."(1) Since I am a contributor to New Studies , yet one who was inspired in the late 1960s to conduct research on U.S. Communism after reading Draper's own two-volume history of Communism in the 1920s,(2) I turned to Cohen's work to explore the critical methodological issues in this increasingly nasty debate over how to interpret the history of the U.S. Left.
