To the east of the Wasatch rise high mountains and irregular plateaus; along its western foothills lie the major cities of Utah, while further west is the Great Basin. In the northeast the snow-capped Uinta Mts. reach the state's highest elevation in Kings Peak (13,528 ft/4,123 m). The dissected Colorado Plateau stretches southward, rugged and largely uninhabitable except in isolated river valleys. Deep, tortuous canyons cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries impede travel but create vistas of remarkable grandeur. Western Utah, part of the Great Basin, was once submerged beneath an extensive Pleistocene lake, Lake Bonneville. For many thousands of years water level in the lake fluctuated, finally subsiding entirely to leave behind a salt-strewn desert, wide expanses of arid but nonalkaline soil, and a series of lakes. Great Salt Lake , the largest of these, has through evaporation reached a concentration of mineral salts several times that of the ocean. Gulls, pelicans, and blue herons are found around the lake and have rookeries on its islands. Much of the lake shore is bordered by mud and salt flats. The haze-covered Oquirrh Mts., rising south of the lake, dip to form pleasant beaches at the water's edge, then emerge as islands within the lake and rise again in the Promontory Mts. on the northern lake shore.

Extractions: The state's centrality is important to the prosperity of the Wasatch Front, Utah's core area, and particularly to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The term "Salt Lake Empire" refers to the large geographical area that comes under considerable economic and/or religious influence from Salt Lake. The empire penetrates significantly into Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada, somewhat in Arizona, and is not of much consequence in either New Mexico or Colorado. Rising to 13,528 feet, Kings Peak is the highest spot in Utah, and Beaver Dam Wash in the southwestern corner of the state is the lowest point at 2,350 feet. Only the Uinta Mountains have peaks that exceed 13,000 feet, and there are twenty-four of them that do. Three other mountains systems have peaks that exceed 12,000 feetthe La Sal, Tushar, and Deep Creek Mountains. The highest peak in the Wasatch Mountains, Mount Nebo, is 11,877 feet.

Extractions: Click on Map to enlarge Bryce Canyon National Park is about 80 miles northeast of Zion National Park but is starkly different in climate, topography, geology and scenery. Bryce sits atop the Paunsagunt Plateau of southwestern Utah between the Markagunt Plateau to the west and Aquarius Plateau to the east. At its widest point, it is about 5 miles east to west and runs 20 miles north to south. Instead of looking up at sandstone formations as at Zion, one is looking down along the Paunsagunt Fault onto much different geological features, primarily hoodoos, formed from the erosional action on shales and sandstone of the Claron formation. At 8,000 feet where the visitor center is located, it is 1,000 feet higher than Zion, with a cooler, moister climate. Much of the area's precipitation comes as afternoon thundershowers during mid to late summer. Spring and fall weather is variable. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. Winter nights are sub-freezing. During some winters, Alaskan cold fronts descend on the Colorado Plateau bringing temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero. The area can have significant snow October through March; annual snowfall averages 100 inches.

Extractions: Canyonlands National Park Setting Canyonlands National Park is a wild and primitive desert region between Capitol Reef and Arches national parks of Utah. It runs about 65 miles north-to-south and about 25 miles east-to-west, encompassing 559 square miles (337,570 acres). It is located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah and is this state's largest national park. The confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers is the centerpiece of of the Canyonlands, cutting through horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, and dividing the park into three topographically distinct regions Island in the Sky, The Needle and The Maze in addition to the unattached Horseshoe Canyon Unit northwest of the main park. Outside the park's boundaries, three jagged mountain ranges abruptly break the pattern of flat-topped canyon landscape. To the east rise the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains, to the south the Abajo Mountain and to the west the Henry Mountains. Canyonlands receives an average of 9.2 inches of precipitation a year. Most of this moisture comes in the form of melting winter snows. The high elevations in the park, 4,000 to 6,000 feet, and the snow create what many ecologists call a cold or high desert. The dryness of the air creates a situation where more moisture could be evaporated from plants and the ground than actually accumulates during the year.
