It has been argued that the partnering of public and private sectors improve the delivery of municipal social services. In this study, I analyze the roles and relationships between the public and private actors, the constraints hampering success and suggest mechanisms of bettering the partnership. Qualitative techniques including In depth interviews and Focus Group discussions were used to collect the data. The study reveals that the participation of the private sector has generally improved solid waste management in Makindye Division in medium to high income areas. However, the Public Local Authority is not committed to subsidizing waste collection in non profitable low income areas. Despite not being legally recognized, material scavengers help in the recovery and reuse of materials at the Kiteezi Landfill. However, the absence of effluent gas monitoring and tapping equipment at the landfill is posing a potential environmental hazard. The study analyzes adoption of improved maize varieties and its effects on farm yields and rural poverty using cross sectional data collected from 151 households in central (in Nakasongola district) and Eastern (in Soroti district) regions in Uganda. A binary probit model was fitted to examine the determinants of level of adoption. OLS method was used to estimate the determinants of intensity of adoption, and the effect of adoption on yield. The sample statistics show very high levels of adoption (about 80%) and a low level of adoption intensity. The mean yields from improved maize varieties (2941.5kg/ha per season) is significantly higher than the yields from local varieties (1694. kg/ha per season). Regression results show that extension advisory services are strongly associated with adoption of improved varieties. Intensity of adoption of improved maize varieties increases farm yields. However, maize yields respond inelastically to adoption. We conclude that adoption of improved seed leads to increased yield. Thus more technical assistance in the form of training and extension is justified in the country on efficiency and welfare grounds. ... Read more

This book presents how land use practices of local people who inhabit the Rwenzori massif impact on the mountain ecology. Evidence shows that local people have cleared steeper slopes mainly for agriculture and construction of buildings. Their actions have caused erosion, mass wasting, land fragmentation and introduction of alien plants. Although they are an important consideration in family decisions to move, children also engage in autonomous, independent migration. Further, researchers now argue for the need to situate migration within political, economic and social conditions to obtain a full understanding of why people migrate. Through the use of children-centred research methods, and in-depth interviews with key informants, this paper considers children's journeys to the street in Uganda. By integrating an analysis of Ugandan street children's spatial origins with the familial and societal contexts of their migration decisions, this research highlights the complexity of their migration. Excerpt: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park -In 1932, two blocks of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest were gazetted as Crown Forest Reserves. The northern block was called the Kayonza Crown Forest Reserve, and the Kasatora Crown Forest Reserve was the southern section. These reserves had a combined area of 207 square kilometres. In 1942, the two Crown Forest Reserves were combined and enlarged, and renamed the Impenetrable Central Crown Forest. This new protected area covered an area of 298 square kilometres and was under the joint control of the Ugandan government's game and forest departments. In 1964, the reserve was gazetted as an animal sanctuary in order to provide extra protection to its mountain gorillas and renamed the Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve. In 1966, two other forest reserves became part of the main reserve, increasing its area to almost 321 square kilometres. The park continued to be managed as both a game sanctuary and forest reserve. In 1991, Impenetrable Central Forest Reservealong with Mgahinga Gorilla Reserve and Rwenzori Mountains Reservewas gazetted as a national park and renamed Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It covered an area of 330.8 square kilometres. The national park was declared in part to protect a range of species within it, most notably the mountain gorilla. This is a good Oxfam publication.It was fairly concise and informative.I was, however, let down by its short length.Another 100 pages would have been nice.
