Excerpt: Czech: Slovak: Romanian: Hungarian: Yasinia (Ukrainian: , Hungarian: ) is an urban-type settlement in the Rakhiv Raion of the Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine. It was the site of the Hutsul Republic after World War I, and the birthplace of several prominent Ukrainians declaring independence from Kingdom of Hungary. This republic was ended by Romanian troops in June 11, 1919. Yasinia was shortly reoccupied by Hungary in July 1919 and passed to Czechoslovakia according to Treaty of Trianon. Hungary again occupied it like whole Zakarpattia between 1939-1944. It was given to USSR in 1945. The wooden church in Yasinia appears on several stamps of the area, including the first stamp of Carpatho-Ukraine. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23371380 ... Read more

Product Description
As the debate about the environmental cost of nuclear power and the issue of nuclear safety continues, a comprehensive assessment of the Chernobyl accident, its long-term environmental consequences and solutions to the problems found, is timely. Although many books have been published which discuss the accident itself and the immediate emergency response in great detail, none have dealt primarily with the environmental issues involved. The authors provide a detailed review of the long-term environmental consequences, in a wide range of ecosystems, many of which are only now becoming apparent. They also highlight responses and counter-measures to combat the environmental consequences and discuss health, social, psychological and economic impacts on the human population as well as the long-term effects on biota.  ... Product Description

How do urban communities accommodate this century's massive transnational migrations? This volume seeks clues about how a city's capacity for urban social sustainability, termed "diversity capital," may expand under such conditions.

The author, Blair A. Ruble, examines three cities, now receiving large numbers of new immigrants, that have long histories of division into just two communities of language and race: Montreal, Washington, and Kyiv. "The growing presence of individuals who do not fit into long-standing group boundaries fundamentally alters the social, cultural, and political contours of traditionally bifurcated metropolitan regions," writes Ruble. "How does that presence change perceptions and institutions?"

Creating Diversity Capital approaches this topic in terms of how the new immigrants live, work, and go to school and describes how the politics in each of these cities has changed, or failed to change, in the face of the new demographics. A special feature is the use of important new information on Kyiv from a set of surveys conducted by the Kennan Institute in 2001-2

Product Description

Seventy-six full-colour maps with text present the geological characteristics of Ukraine in this translation of an atlas first prepared by scholars at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences' Institue of Geology in 2001. Widely acclaimed in its country of origin, An Atlas of the Geology and Mineral Deposits of Ukraine includes up-to-date geological concepts, as well as ecological, historical, and prehistoric items of interest.

The seventy-six maps are grouped into seven categories: general data, geophysical, structural, geological 'slice,' lithological, ecological, hydrological, and mineralogical. Ukraine has for some time been known as a country rich in mineral resources; as a result, maps depicting its vast mineral deposits as well as its oil, gas, and coal deposits may be of particular interest to foreign readers.

Product Description
This book describes how, on 26 April 1986, a huge explosion tore apart the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine. As well as giving a dramatic moment-by-moment account of the explosion, it also explains the lead up to how it could take place by looking at Soviet Russia's history. It then goes on to explain the impact this explosion had on the nuclear industry, the environment and how it contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Moment-in-time boxes, describing eye-witness accounts, give a sense of drama and immediacy to the book. ... Read more

Product Description
On April 26, 1986, Unit Four of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded in then Soviet Ukraine. More than 3.5 million people in Ukraine alone, not to mention many citizens of surrounding countries, are still suffering the effects. Life Exposed is the first book to comprehensively examine the vexed political, scientific, and social circumstances that followed the disaster. Tracing the story from an initial lack of disclosure to post-Soviet democratizing attempts to compensate sufferers, Adriana Petryna uses anthropological tools to take us into a world whose social realities are far more immediate and stark than those described by policymakers and scientists. She asks: What happens to politics when state officials fail to inform their fellow citizens of real threats to life? What are the moral and political consequences of remedies available in the wake of technological disasters?

Through extensive research in state institutions, clinics, laboratories, and with affected families and workers of the so-called Zone, Petryna illustrates how the event and its aftermath have not only shaped the course of an independent nation but have made health a negotiated realm of entitlement. She tracks the emergence of a "biological citizenship" in which assaults on health become the coinage through which sufferers stake claims for biomedical resources, social equity, and human rights. Life Exposed provides an anthropological framework for understanding the politics of emergent democracies, the nature of citizenship claims, and everyday forms of survival as they are interwoven with the profound changes that accompanied the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Product Description
The 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant disaster offered a timely opportunity for an expert assessmentof the current situation and suggestions for approaches to managingthe information associated with the site and surrounding contaminatedterritories. The great quantity of data coming from the contaminated region was andis very difficult to use without he aid of modern informationtechnologies, especially Geographic Information Systems (GIS) andRemote Sensing (RS). Application of these technologies, and relatedexpertise, became crucial to the region's economic recovery andsustainability planning. Given the real possibility of a similaraccident at nuclear facilities elsewhere around the world, thedevelopment of recovery strategies based on experience gained atChernobyl, using modern scientific methods and technologies, will beinvaluable in the future. The presentations and discussion reported inthe book have led to some key conclusions. Image maps derived fromsatellite imagery are the most economical, up to date and readilyavailable basis for Chernobyl-related applications, as well as forother future applications. The study of soil-plant transfer ofradionuclides afforded comparatively much more reliable data. GIS inassociation with adequate knowledge is a valuable tool in decisionmaking and modelling of contaminated areas and objects. ... Read more
