Editorial Review Book Description McKeachie's Teaching Tips is a handbook designed to provide helpful strategies for dealing with both the everyday problems of teaching at the university level, and those that pop up in trying to maximize learning for every student. The suggested strategies are supported by research and are grounded in enough theory to enable teachers to adapt them to their own situations. The author does not suggest a "set of recipes" to be followed mechanically, but gives teachers the tools they need to deal with the ever changing dynamics of teaching and learning. Editorial Review Book Description I would like to offer you a warm welcome, and I hope that you enjoy this attempt to sum up the school that has made my college experience so very rewarding. Statistics are a very poor indicator of a person's compatibility with a school. What's more important are the things that a friend would tell you, like where to go for a great cheese steak. I can not predict if Penn is right for you, but hopefully this book will bring you one step closer to making that decision for yourself. Penn may be the Ivy League school that most people either forget or mix up with Penn State, but to the students who call our little niche in West Philadelphia home, Penn is a place rich with history, vibrance, and opportunity. One thing that makes Penn such an exciting place is the fact that it offers the best of so many different worlds. As a student here, you can be on campus and forget that you are in a city, or you can walk a couple of blocks and be immersed in the culture and excitement that is Philadelphia. You can study humanities, engineering, or business and receive an unparalleled education, no matter which one you choose. You can join an inner-tube water polo team or start a club to support any cause. You will meet people you never thought you would interact with before. Some people come to Penn for specific reasons. Many are motivated by the prestige of Wharton's program. Others come to follow in their parents' footsteps, and a few come because they were rejected from Harvard. Not to mention the opportunity for a top-notch liberal arts education. However, my advice to you would be to follow your instincts. Don't let the big city or the large student-body scare you. Penn truly is a community, and if you allow yourself to become part of this community, you will soon count yourself among the ranks of those who call proudly call themselves Quakers. Of course, deciding where you are going to spend the next four years of your life is an important decision that you need to make for yourself. Hopefully, this book will serve as a tool to help you make this decision and provide you with a unique perspective on the University of Pennsylvania. Jennifer Klein, Author Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Amazon.com The bulk of this book, as its title promises, comprises 100 examples of successful college-application essays. There are those who believe that reading essays will make you a better essay writer and those who don't. But reading these essays--and the experts' comments on them--will help you figure out what you want to write and how best to write it. From the essays included here, one surmises that the narrower your focus, the more effective the essay, as long as your narrowness doesn't cross over into insignificance. What matters most is not what you write about (these essays take on late-night TV game shows, self-induced baldness, the picture on a bag of Goldfish crackers, a family drive on the New Jersey Turnpike, and even a seven-inch plastic Godzilla), but what you do with your subject matter.--Jane Steinberg Customer Reviews (9)

Editorial Review Product Description During the writing of College ProwlerÂs guidebooks, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. We think itÂs important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any campusÂthatÂs why if any aspect of a particular school is terrible, we (unlike a campus brochure) intend to publish it. While we do keep an eye out for the occasional extremistÂthe cheerleader or the cynicÂwe take pride in letting the students tell it like it is. We strive to create a book thatÂs as representative as possible of each particular campus. Our books cover both the good and the bad, and whether the survey responses point to recurring trends or a variation in opinion, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides. College Prowler guidebooks are in the hands of students throughout the entire process of their creation. Because you canÂt make student-written guides without the students, we have students at each campus who help write, randomly survey their peers, edit, layout, and perform accuracy checks on every book that we publish. From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion and help to represent contentment, prominence, or satisfaction for each of our 20 specific categories. Just as in grade school, the higher the mark the more content, more prominent, or more satisfied the students are with the particular category. Once a book is written, additional students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. Our bounce-back teamÂa group of randomly selected students who have no involvement with the projectÂare asked to read over the material in order to help ensure that the book accurately expresses every aspect of the university and its students. This same process is applied to the 200-plus schools College Prowler currently covers. Each book is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation to every school that we cover. ItÂs no easy accomplishment, but itÂs the reason that our guides are such a great resource. When reading our books and looking at our grades, keep in mind that every college is different and that the students who make up each school are not uniformÂas a result, it is important to assess schools on a case-by-case basis. Because itÂs impossible to summarize an entire school with a single number or description, each book provides a dialogue, not a decision, thatÂs made up of 20 different topics and hundreds of student quotes. In the end, we hope that this guide will serve as a valuable tool in your college selection process. Enjoy! |
