The collection of Hebrew, Judaeo-Arabic and Arabic manuscript material that was deposited in the Cairo Genizah as early as a thousand years ago contains some 1,600 manuscript fragments comprising medical and para-medical items as well as correspondence relating to medical activities, all of them from medieval Mediterranean society. These medical items have been located, identified and described in the form of a catalogue to provide access to the originals. Among the fragments are Arabic and Hebrew translations of the works of Galen and Hippocrates in addition to commentaries on them; the medical writings of Avicenna, Rhazes, al-Majusi and Maimonides; specialist treatises on the eye, on fevers, on sexual medicine, on poisons; pharmacopoeias; and also a number of rare and previously unknown works. The English legal manuscripts in Cambridge University Library form one of the most important collections in the world. The principal treasures derive from the renowned library, containing over 230 volumes, collected by John Moore (d.1714), Bishop of Ely, presented to the University by King George I in 1715. It includes some of the old manuscripts collected by Francis Tate (d.1616), and the working manuscript library of Mr Justice Nicholas (d.1667). The collection also contains medieval statute-books, year-books, medieval and early modern readings and moots in the inns of court, and law reports from the Tudor period down to the reign of Charles II, together with examples of every other major type of manuscript law book in use in England prior to the eighteenth century. Aston, Ernest Satow, and Heinrich von Siebold in Japan, mostly in the 1860s and 1870s. Of the 2,500 items, some are manuscripts and some movable-type books from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the bulk, however, are wood-block printed books of the Edo period (1600-1868). This paper proposes a framework for assessing the technical efficiency of 118 university libraries from Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the United States. The flexible non-parametric approach of data envelopment analysis has been chosen to analyse the performance differentials of university libraries. We also investigate whether the institutional settings affect the degree of library efficiency. The findings of the intercountry efficiency comparison revealed that almost one-third of the university libraries are technically efficient. Using environment-specific frontiers to distinguish differences in managerial efficiency from differences in environmental efficiency, we found considerable differences in technical efficiency between European and non-European university libraries. However, as regards the environmental setting, the non-European best-practice frontier outperforms the European best-practice frontier. ... Read more
