Sun Microsystems (the creator of Java) has two JavaCertification Exams--one for programmers and one for developers. ThisStudy Guide is the ultimate authority for both of the SunCertification Tests! The lead author of Sybex's The Complete Java 2Certification Study Guide actually developed the exams for Sun. Notonly was Roberts the key player in the concept, strategy, andimplementation of the test guidelines, he also developed thequestions. The Study Guide is organized according to the examobjectives defined by Sun. Every single objective is covered, reinforced with sample questions and annotated answers. The book has astamp of approval from the Sun Education Team and includes a CD withan exclusive Java exam test engine.Amazon.com Review
Sun Java certification is no picnic, so a thorough study guideis essential. Look no further than The Complete Java 2Certification Study Guide for formal, structured preparation. Thisbulky title offers comprehensive coverage of the objectives you mustmaster to pass both the Programmer's Exam and the more demandingDeveloper's Exam.

Written by a trio of Sun Java course instructors, this book uses a straightforward bottom-up approach, starting withcore syntax of Java and moving into progressively more graphical andsophisticated aspects of development. The familiar textbook stylemakes the title very suitable for self-paced study, even if you're notshooting for certification.

Each chapter includes a test, and theanswers are explained. The authors use code snippets that are notoverwhelming in length to keep their readers focused on the concept athand. A large portion of the rear of the book is devoted to a Java 2API reference, and the CD-ROM features a test limit to help you getpsyched for the big exam. If you've got the time and dedication tomaster the material, this fine guide is all you need to get Sun'sstamp of approval as a developer. --Stephen W. Plain

1-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes, Mistakes, and more Mistakes
I find it hard to believe that a study guide this error ridden was ever released given the gross errors my study group has found. We feel a lack of confidence in the material presented in this text and in the authors in particular. We have to verify everything presented in this text and believe nothing to be true without doing so. This is not a good way to study for a certification exam. We need a trusted and reliable reference, not a work of fiction.

We are not at all pleased with the material covered. Nor are we pleased with the mock exams which we all agree are too easy.

In all I would suggest that you not purchase this book and wait instead for the next release of Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sample exams on CD are buggy and wrong
The exams on the accompanying CD are crap.
The engine is buggy (sometime you cannot see the whole text) and answers are wrong. E.g.
Q: "Which access modifier will allow access only within the class and package?"
A: "friendly"

Maybe friendly, but definitely wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was all I needed!
I studied this book carefully twice through and passed the exam easily. It may not be perfect, but it was all I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right for the Programmer's Exam...

I used this book as my primary study guide for the Programmer Exam and it definitely helped me passing with high score.

This book is just right for this exam and covers all the objectives very well. I would certainly recommend anybody who is planning to prepare for the exam to read this book. Even experienced Java Developers can gain much of the knowledge of Java Language Fundamentals by reading this book.

However, based on my experience with the exam questions, I believe, this book is somewhat light on topics like Garbage Collection and Collections. If you aim to pass with high scores, you need to put more stress on these two topics and hence need to supplement this book with additional resources/tutorials freely available on the Internet. Otherwise, this is just right for the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors for a 4th Edition
Obviously no one made a CURSORY proof-reading of this edition, or they would have seen dozens of double-quotes in the examples appear as some odd character I have never seen before. Once I figured it out I could decode what was meant, but it was a distracting nuisance. Obviously no one made a DETAILED proof-reading of this edition, or they would have seen us taught the size in bits of a double as 16 instead of 64. Obviously no one made a PROGRAMMING proof-reading of this edition, or they would have seen 65 listed as the byte-code of a lower-case 'a' in one of the exam samples, which made me choose "none of the above". Because of the errors which I DID see, I had little confidence in anything else that seemed questionable.

The chapter on Collections (which was probably added in this edition as it is new in 1.4 I believe) was not detailed enough, and didn't satisfactorily answer the chapter's own review questions.

The sample exams were not anything like the real one, which I failed. I kissed that $150 goodbye. ... Read more

Product Description
Time-series data—data arriving in time order, or a data stream—can be found in fields such as physics, finance, music, networking, and medical instrumentation. Designing fast, scalable algorithms for analyzing single or multiple time series can lead to scientific discoveries, medical diagnoses, and perhaps profits.

"High Performance Discovery in Time Series" presents rapid-discovery techniques for finding portions of time series with many events (i.e., gamma-ray scatterings) and finding closely related time series (i.e., highly correlated price and return histories, or musical melodies). A typical time-series technique may compute a "consensus" time series—from a collection of time series—to use regression analysis for predicting future time points. By contrast, this book aims at efficient discovery in time series, rather than prediction, and its novelty lies in its algorithmic contributions and its simple, practical algorithms and case studies. It presumes familiarity with only basic calculus and some linear algebra.

Topics and Features:

*Presents efficient algorithms for discovering unusual bursts of activity in large time-series databases

*Describes the mathematics and algorithms for finding correlation relationships between thousands or millions of time series across fixed or moving windows

*Demonstrates strong, relevant applications built on a solid scientific basis

*Outlines how readers can adapt the techniques for their own needs and goals

*Describes algorithms for query by humming, gamma-ray burst detection, pairs trading, and density detection

*Offers self-contained descriptions of wavelets, fast Fourier transforms, and sketches as they apply to time-series analysis

This new monograph provides a technical survey of concepts and techniques for describing and analyzing large-scale time-series data streams. It offers essential coverage of the topic for computer scientists, physicists, medical researchers, financial mathematicians, musicologists, and researchers and professionals who must analyze massive time series. In addition, it can serve as an ideal text/reference for graduate students in many data-rich disciplines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid but overpriced
Table of contents, accessible through "Search inside this book", shows Part I dominated by discussion of data-compression methods, including DFT, DWT, SVD and (barely) random projection, followed by 12-page chapters on indexing and similarity search, with the latter centered on dynamic time warping. Part II presents three applications, with ancillary theoretical results, demonstrating data compression, indexing and similarity search operating in "online" mode on multiple data streams.

Practitioners will go for the applications, but I appreciate the book as an introduction to data compression (and, to minimal extent, similarity search) for non-CS, non-DSP audience. You can "reconstruct", and certainly extend, the material of Part I with other sources, but having an all-in-one-place introduction is a convenience.

Whether that convenience is worth $85 - "overpriced by 200%", says my inner socialist - depends on the reader's budget.

This new and updated textbook is an excellent way to introduce probability and information theory to students new to mathematics, computer science, engineering, statistics, economics, or business studies. Only requiring knowledge of basic calculus, it begins by building a clear and systematic foundation to probability and information. Classic topics covered include discrete and continuous random variables, entropy and mutual information, maximum entropy methods, the central limit theorem and the coding and transmission of information. Newly covered for this edition is modern material on Markov chains and their entropy. Examples and exercises are included to illustrate how to use the theory in a wide range of applications, with detailed solutions to most exercises available online for instructors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The middle way
I bought/read the first edition of this book several years ago. And I quite enjoyed it!I was glad to see that it had been followed by a second edition, but surprised to see that it had only rated "two stars".

After reading the earlier review, I thought "It wasn't that bad, was it?".So I went back and looked at my copy, and sure enough I had pencil-corrected several errors (one couldn't call them typos, because they recurred). I already had a sufficient background in probability theory, so the errors were immediately recognizable. But I have to admit that a naive reader would have been seriously confused by the definition/notation of conditional probability and Bayes' Theorem, if only going by the slipshod presentation in section 4.3.

[The problem starts on p.43 (of the 1st edition): "...In light of our knowledge of B, the probability of A now changes to P_B(A), which we call the conditional probability of B given A. ... Note: Most textbooks write P_B(A) as P(A/B). We shall not use this latter notation as it misleadingly suggests that conditional probability is the probability of some set A/B constructed from A and B."A noble intention that goes completely awry in the following several pages. In fact, it looks like somebody (maybe an editor, rather than the author) decided to "fix" the notation, but only converted half of the instances, leaving a confused mess. In this section, there are also two places where they wrote "continuous probability" rather than the intended "conditional probability". Somebody was having a bad day!]

Be that as it may, I still have a high opinion of the author's intentions and, for the most part, execution of the final product. At the time when I found this book, it was the best "middle way" for getting an introduction to Information Theory--more depth than found in Pierce, but not the full baptism of Cover & Thomas. I see that the 2nd edition of this book has added a tenth chapter, introducing stochastic processes and Markov chains. Judging from the 1st edition, I would expect this to be a valuable "middle way" through those topics, as well.

Any 2nd edition owners care to comment?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
I've only read half this book, and I don't think I'll finish it. I'm a philosophy grad student and I wanted to get more in-depth in my understanding of probability theory and information theory. But I'm finding this book unhelpful.

First, some of the topics are insufficiently covered. Despite the fact that Chapter 2 is devoted entirely to combinatorics, there's all of 1 page that introduces and explains 'nPr' and 'nCr', and the explanations are (a) merely examples or (b) difficult to understand mathematicianese. By 'mathematicianese' I mean saying things like 'clearly there are n ways to pick the first object' when everyone knows there's exactly one way to pick *the* F, which is to pick it, although there are many objects one could pick first (similarly, 'In how many different ways can a group of three ball bearings be selected from a bag containing eight' is a funny way of asking 'How many distinct groups of ball bearings can one select from a bag of eight?') I understood the equations in the book, but not the concepts, and had to find an online tutorial before I could proceed.

Second, if you're working independently, doing the problems isn't very helpful. This is because instead of solutions being formulae (as when the problem is 'if 2 balls are drawn from a container of n red and m blue balls, what's the probability that they're both red?') they're often rather numbers (as when the problem is 'if 2 balls are drawn from a container of 5 red and 3 blue balls, what's the probability that they're both red?'). This makes it difficult to see from the answers in the back of the book (a) what one did wrong, when one gets a problem wrong and (b) how to get the problem right.

Third, I just found a lot of the book's cutesyness annoying and absurd. For instance, the author takes sets to be lists of symbols. This is fine at first, but then he says things like 'the number 5 is in set S' as though numbers were symbols, and 'the set R is larger than the set N' as though there could be more than countably many symbols, and then uses the set comprehension notation in inconsistent ways, e.g. '{x: x in S}' as though 'x' ranged over symbols and '{x: x + 2}' as though 'x' ranged over numbers. Also on p47 the author gets Bayes's Theorem wrong (!!!) and he then "proves" his incorrect formulation. [For the record, the author's formulation is P(B/A) = P(A/B)P(A)/P(B). Exercise for the reader: prove a contradiction from this statement (Hint: first prove P(A) = P(B) for all A, B)]

I see that there's a second edition coming out, so I imagine it will correct the p47 error. But I think it just tells of general sloppiness in argumentation where the author makes leaps and the reader, who is trying to learn, can't really follow. ... Read more

As for content, a lot of the information seemed dated and missing. As an example, is IPX and appletalk in the exam? How about voip bandwidth calculations, SONA, PPDIOO?I have other studying material and none of these examples were in the book. Was 640-861 mixed up? 1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Just SUCKS!!!
HELLO SPELL CHECK.THIS HAS GOT TO HAVE THE MOST MISTAKES IN IT REGARDING SIMPLE SPELLING TO FORMULAS AND CONSTANT REPETITIVE CONFIGURATIONS I HAVE EVER SEEN. I THINK THAT IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE WRITER DID NOT TAKE THE EXAM HIMSELF, THE BOOK WAS BLACK AND THE EXAM WAS WHITE.IF YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE THE EXAM DO NOT, DOOOOO NOOOOT BUY THIS BOOK. HEY BUDDY YOU MISSED A TONE OF STUFF THAT JUST HAPPENED TO BE IN THE EXAM AND NOT EVEN MENTIONED IN YOUR BOOK.I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE AN ENTERPRISE AND SERVICE PROVIDER INSTRUCTOR OF CISCO TECHNOLOGIES. NO WONDER YOU WORK FOR YOUR SELF NOBODY WOULD HIRE YOU. I AM ANGRY THAT I SPENT ALL THAT MONEY ON YOUR BOOK AND GOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OUT OF IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient to pass exam - does not cover all exam topics
I picked up this study guide to prepare for the MPLS exam for Ciscos CCIP. I read through it in 2 weeks and signed up for the exam only to find out that I picked a study guide completely insufficient for the exam: The study guide misses out on a few important topics, such as loop prevention when using BGP as a CE-PE protocol, and treats many topics, such as MPLS over ATM networks, BGP and MP BGP to implement VPNs, and convergence issues in frame and cell mode, just to name a few, to lightly. The only good thing I can say about this book is that it gave me a broad overview of MPLS/VPNs, with a lot of holes to be filled though, something I had to do by reading other books on the subject.
I eventually passed the MPLS exam using the CCIP MPLS study guide from Cisco press - even if this book takes longer to read, anyone who wants to pass this exam is better off just taking this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a recommended book for MPLS
Way too many repeating configuration examples from which only 10% is MPLS related. Not enough information to pass the test or just get some understanding about MPLS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to FAIL the exam if you use this....
This isn't much of a review, but my ccnp friend has taken the Cisco MPLS exam OVER 6 times so far and failed every time. (I keep telling him to get some other books.Duh!)
...maybe Cisco booby-trapped their exam so readers of THIS book will never get to 85% to pass ;-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Does anyone prrof read at Sybex any longer?
Before you even go to the errata page at Sybex just check that the book is all there. Mine wasn't and was missing 30 plus pages. With the extensive errata in hand then take your sissors and paste to transpose various diagrams onto the pages they are supposed to be on. What on earth was Sybex up to releasing this garbage. The technical content of the book is completely trashed by the incomprehensible and multiple mistakes. The author of this book has been terribly let down by the publishing house and should be howling for the blood of the proof readers. To expect the reader to go on a "do-it-yourself" re-publishing exercise with errata, pen, paper and glue in hand is the height of cheek. If this publishing house intends to prove it could not give a damn about its output then this is the book to do it. However they could prove that they care about their customers and authors by withdrawing all copies and republishing the book. As it stands it is not fit for the purpose that it was either intended for or purchased. I did like Sybex, I will be very careful in the future though.Edited on 27/11/2002 Although I have complained now three times to Sybex UK and have been assured by the hapless UK staff that this has been passed on, complete silence from Sybex US.I think the deafness says it all just stay with Cisco's offerings as I will have to.KCH 27/11/2002. ... Product Description
Information systems in tourism, such as computer reservation systems, yield management systems, and tourism-marketing systems, have been among the pioneers of leading-edge technology applications and have driven the dynamics of development in tourism services. Tourism is regarded as one of the most successful applications of electronic commerce. The book is synthesizing and analyzing the current situation, trying to set the stage and to show ways of future research. A common methodological approach and framework enables the analysis of the ongoing processes and the underlying trends. From both a technological and a management point of view, the work is focusing on interorganizational processes and information systems, it takes a network-oriented approach, corresponding with the fact that travel and tourism is an interorganizational business. In order to provide a coherent picture, the work is located within a triangle of tourism research, information technology and computer science, and management science. With respect to these scientific fields, different perspectives are pursued and integrated: a market and industry perspective, looking at trends in the tourism industry, an analysis of the value chain and its redesign induced by modern information and communications technologies, a discussion of organizational impacts and the implications on management strategies, focusing on a business (network) redesign. Several case studies illustrate the strategies of different players in industry, highlight structural changes, and indicate future trends. Extensive references provide a comprehensive coverage of the literature in tourism information systems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Information technology (IT) fits the tourism industry like those three-fingered white gloves fit Mickey Mouse - but you have to really understand what you are doing if you want to hang out with the big thinkers. Just ask authors and researchers Hannes Werthner and Stefan Klein, specialists on IT applications for the tourism trade. They teach a complex class, here, about getting destination and attraction information to travelers and about getting tourism data back to service providers. This IT theme park is a place where insiders give the professional scoop to other insiders. The language is highly technical, theoretical and complex (perhaps, now and then, even more complex than the ideas at hand warrant). Casual visitors will like the extensive source documentation, charts, graphs and arrow-filled diagrams, but the text is written for folks who live in this industry day in and day out. If you already know info technology and tourism, we from getAbstract invite you to enjoy this expert rundown on how all the internal mysteries relate. There's nothing Mickey Mouse about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor
This is an excellent book providing a comprehensive look at information technology in the tourism industry. The perspective of the authors is clearly IT.I would strongly recommend this book as a reader for senior level undergraduate and graduate level classes in this area. The authors should be commended for providing the first comprehensive look at the tourism industry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
This book is rubbish! It is nothing more than a very long and pedantic list of topics. There is no explanation of anything.

The english is also near comical.

The only saving grace is the extensive list of references for which it earns 1 star. ... Read more
