Word Workout is Alright
What I like about this programme is that it actually explain the use of word roots such as the 'pre' prefix and presented a few examples of words using the same word root.Also, it actually spell out the word for you in the programme.So there is no need for you to fiddle with a booklet to refer to the word.Just pop in the tape and listen while you drive or while doing your own work.I would have preferred the programme to be longer.And maybe include a female speaker for more variety! ... Great source of fun words!
As a writer, I found this book to be a great source of new words. While I don't always agree with some of the definitions provided, I do use this book on a regular basis as a thesaurus of sorts. Here are a couple examples I couldn't resist:

Saturnalia: a period of wild, unrestrained feasting and merriment.
Jimjams: The jitters; a fit of nervousness

As a student majoring in Language Teaching, this book not only provides clear definitions about strategies, learning strategies and vocabulary learning strategies,which are necessary for academic studies,but also provides author's research design from qualitative and quatitative perspectives, which focus on the EFL students in China.Although it would be better if author used diagrams to help readers understand the procedures of empirical studies rather than used words only in chapter 5 and 6, in sum the framework of this book is clear and it does have teaching implications. ... Great Resource for Spelling/Vocab
I love this book!We use the 2005 edition as our primary speller in my seventh grade class.The lists are on level and the exercises help the students memorize and conjugate.Words are grouped in themes, which can be hard when it comes to formal assessments, but make understanding easier for the students.

Vocabulary Workshop - Teaching and TESTING vocabulary
This book will help students or teachers when using the "Vocabulary Workshop" program. This very small paperback contains the following:

- A Warm-Up test. This will help students/teachers get used to the format of the tests in this booklet.

- Unit Tests. One 2-page test for each unit of the student textbook. The tests assess students on the skills taught and reviewed inside of the student textbook.

- Cumulative Tests. Tests that cover several units of the textbook. (The Student Text has cumulative reviews to prepare for these tests). Also this test contains a section entitled "Framing Sentences" which requires the test taker to write an original sentence using the vocabulary word.

- Final Cumulative Test. Essentially, A Final Exam. This test assesses all 15 units, and the skills taught throughout the book. This test also contains the "Framing Sentences" activity.

- Word Mastery List. A check-off list containing all of the words from the particular level of "Vocabulary Workshop". The test taker can check-off the word after they have mastered it.

I've used this book before, but at a different grade level. It works very well and is a great supplement for the student book.

Schaum's Outline of French Vocabulary (Schaum's Outline Series)
This book can be very helpful as an aid in learning what to expect and how to respond to various experiences in French speaking countries. This book gives examples of giving and getting directions, what to expect at a bank, train station, or restaurant, etc.

As a beginner trying to self teach myself basic French, this is a fine reference to fall back on.

Best French Vocabulary building book
Schaum's book here is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Although it is targeted at students taking exams, the book's rich content will benefit any serious student of French.A whopping 46 chapters, divided into 10 major units covering Travel, Services, Food, Shopping, Medical Care, Home Life, Entertainment, Sports & Leisure, Education and Work, and Appendices on Numbers, Time Expressions, The Francophonie, Clothing & Shoes Sizes, etc,it provides tons of vocabulary items, to meet most of your everyday needs.It is also illustrated with many pictures (black & white) e.g. interior of a car, an airport, bathroom, etc with items labelled.

Most other vocab. books simplycategorize topics and then throw a long list of itemsat you, with no drill/exercises to help reinforce your learning. For me vocab. acquisition and retention need drill and exercises to complement memorization.The book's drills and exercises do just that. Apart from Schaum, Practice Makes Perfect's French Vocabulary by Eliane Kurbegov, is the other book I know that also offers exercises to complement the categorized topics.However, at 22 Chapters, it is only half the size of Schaum, and nowhere as comprehensive.

I own several vocab books: Schaum's, Practice Makes Perfect, Mastering French Vocabulary by W.Fischer and 10,000 French Words by W. Rowlinson.

Overall, I rate Schaum the best.

Note: I have not checked 6,000+ Essential French Words which comes with a CD that reportedly pronounces several hundred essential words, allows you to build flash cards and I think also has exercises.

Very useful book...
I studied French for many years.I can tell you much of the vocabulary in this book is very, very useful.I would fancy that an American student of French would benefit from this than a Canadian one, since they would be less likely to cover these terms in French courses on the high school in the U.S., and they wouldn't cover these everyday words in Canadian French university courses or American ones.You are dealing with terms related to cars, sports, travelling, hotel reservations etc.. I think that is useful, and you can't feel fluent without knowing these terms.I have a very old version of this book (1985), and I eventually want to get this newer one and compare.

Schaum's Outlines of French Vocabulary
I have given this product a hundred per cent rating because:
1)it is easy to understand and
2)it is comprehensive; it contains some topics, such as "L'enseignment" and "Au travail" that are rarely found in other books of its category.
I recommend this product to anyone who wants to learn French fast and easily.

Perfect for the intermediate learner
The first time I saw the book in a book shop, I didn't buy it because it looked like it was meant to be used by students cramming for exams. Maybe this is indeed the purpose of the book. I am an adult learner trying tolearn French on my own. Since I don't have to pass any exams, I didn'tthink the book would be of any use to me. The second time I saw the book, Ibought it anyway because it wasn't so expensive and I thought maybe I wouldpick up some useful vocabulary anyway. The book is surprisingly good. Infact, this is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Its 46chapters and the appendixes cover the words and phrases needed in a widevariety of situations. Maybe advanced students may find the book easy, butthe level of difficulty is just about right for an intermediate learnerlike me. ... Read more
