The School of Music professor and his long-time collaborator, Dr. Peter Driessen of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, have recently received a landmark grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada and the Canadian Council for the Arts to investigate the fusion of art and science. Using the science of gesture recognition and the art of sound mapping, they are out to explore the future of musical instruments. At the heart of the project is the radio drum. Created at Bell Labs in the 1980s, the instrument consists of two conventional-looking drumsticks and a flat foam-covered pad. When connected to a computer, moving the sticks above the pad generates sound. Those electrical signals are then mapped to sounds by a computer. Exactly what sounds depends on the details of how Schloss and Driessen have programmed the instrument.

Extractions: Northwest College Music Department Homepage Mike Masterson Professor Masterson began teaching in the Music Department at Northwest College in 1977, just two weeks after Elvis died. He now serves as Division Chair for the Visual and Performing Arts Division. Courses taught over the years include Written Theory I and II, Introduction to Music, American Popular Music, Music History, "Born to Lose": A Cultural Narrative of Country Music, Trombone, and the Studio Singers Jazz/Pop Choir . He previously taught public school music in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and on the Navajo Reservation at the College of Ganado in Arizona. Dr. Masterson conducts choral clinics and adjudicates in both the vocal and instrumental areas in five regional states. During the summer he directs the Yellowstone Vocal Jazz Camp held in the mountains west of Powell, Wyoming. His rank is full professor at Northwest College. He holds the following degrees: a Bachelor's of Science in Music Education from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, 1972; a Master's of Music from Arizona State University, 1977; and a Doctor of Philosophy in American Studies from The University of New Mexico, 1990. His doctoral study and continued research focus on the study of music and its meanings and values in the American cultural context.

Don't miss it! Easier - Sometimes people talk about the 'West,' the 'Wild West,' or the 'Old West.' They are usually referring to the people and events of the western region of the United States during the second half of the 1800's. Harder - The romantic view of the Old West can be seen in western movies and novels that depict the Wild West as a time of gunfights, gambling, and Indian attacks. In reality, most inhabitants of the West didn't carry a gun or participate in shootouts. A century ago the American West was a rough and wild place. Far from the control of the US government in the East, the Old West was ruled by its own set of laws. In the early 1840s, settlers began moving toward the Pacific Northwest. After gold was found in California in the mid 1800s, people began to flood the west in search of their fortune. Next, cowboys began rounding up wild cattle and organizing herds. The pony express, the stagecoach, and ultimately the Transcontinental Railroad and the telegraph began to join the East and the West. By 1900, the range was fenced in to create ranches, the Native Americans moved to reservations, and many frontier towns became well-established cities.
