The deep forests of the Olympic Peninsula are among the rainiest places in the world but the flat semi-desert land that lies east of the Cascade Mountains stretches for long distances without a single tree. Snow-covered peaks tower above the foothills and lowlands around them. Mount Rainier, the highest mountain, in the state, appears to "float" on the horizon, southeast of Seattle and Tacoma. In 1853, the Washington Territory was formed from part of the Oregon Territory. Its coastal location and Puget Sound harbors give it a leading role in trade with Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific Rim. The state has two major mountain rangesthe 7,000-foot Olympic Mountains surrounded by temperate rain forest on the peninsula west of Puget Sound, and the more majestic Cascade Range, which boasts the 14,410-foot Mount Rainier and the volcanic Mount St. Helens, which erupted twice in the 1980s.

Washington's boldest physiographic feature is the lofty Cascade Range , rising to 14,410 ft (4,392 m) at Mt. Rainier. The Cascades block the eastward movement of warm ocean air from the Alaska Current, causing abundant rainfall to the west and semiarid conditions to the east. The valleys of the Wenatchee, Yakima, and other rivers flowing eastward from the mountains are important irrigated farming areas, while the Cascades themselves are the site of North Cascades and Mount Rainier national parks, several national forests, and noted ski resorts. Their scenery is a major tourist attraction. Mount St. Helens, on the west slope near the Oregon boundary, is the most recent (1980) Cascade peak to erupt.

And here is a link to a list of the 246 Place Names in Washigton Co., PA Background Washington County is found in the extreme southwest corner of Pennsylvania. Of the four major geographic regions in the state, Washington Co. is on the Allegheny Plateau. The Allegheny Plateau covers roughly half the state, that half bounded in the east by the ridges of Allegheny mountains. Rolling hills delineated by creeks or "runs" and punctuated by springs comprise the area which was originally hardwood forest. The primeval forest supported black bear, elk, moose, deer, panthers, wildcats, wolves, wild ducks and geese, ruffed grouse, quail, pheasants, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, and woodchucks. This part of the state drains into the Ohio river system. The Monongahela River, which flows northward to join the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh and form the Ohio River, forms Washington County's eastern boundary.
