Extractions: The Monongahela and Ohio Rivers in southwestern Pennsylvania, north central West Virginia, and eastern Ohio define the Monongahela Basin. This basin contains approximately 30 coal seams of varying quality, depth, and composition. The most commercially viable seam is the Pittsburgh. The map identifies the structure contours of the Pittsburgh coal seam with the darker colors indicating greater elevation above sea level of the base of the coal seam. The estimated total mined area of the Pittsburgh coal seam is approximately 1,600 square miles. Underground Pittsburgh coal mines appear as outlines on the map. The principal task of the GIS portion of the Mine Pool project is to gather detailed maps from state, federal, and corporate map repositories; convert them to digital georeferenced images; and digitize the mine workings. This GIS data helps to establish the location of internal and external impermeable mine barriers for predicting water flow and avoiding floods. As mining companies have folded or changed hands, barriers have been breached for man ways, haulage ways, or air and utility flow.
