Extractions: Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002 Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. West Virginia has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (kinship caregivers) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in West Virginia and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in West Virginia The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.

Extractions: The Lincoln County Cooperative Extension Service is a program of West Virginia University (WVU) and the United States Department of Agriculture . It also is funded locally by the Lincoln County Commission, the Lincoln County Board of Education and is supported by other local private and public funding agencies and individuals. The purpose of the Cooperative Extension Service is to bring education from the college halls to the practical world where we live. Although the 4-H and other youth programs are the most visible of the Extension Service's programs, they are not the only services provided. The Lincoln County Extension Service is. . . helping you put knowledge to work! Although the Extension Service is grounded in a rural society of days gone by, it has not lingered in an agricultural based society and watched as the world passed by. The Extension Service has changed with the times in order to make the many programs that it offers attractive to all types of populations, whether inter-city, urban, suburban, rural or in between. In Lincoln County, since it is a more rural area than some others, the focus still is on serving the rural needs of the region. As Lincoln County grows, the Extension Service is already prepared to grow with it by leaning on the storehouse of services that it already provides to urban areas. Lincoln County is a changing society, and the Extension Service is an agent of change.
