Extractions: To introduce the concept of multiplication, we begin by brainstorming things that come in twos. Ideas are listed on a chart. Then, using the students as models, we create problems, such as: "If one student has two eyes, how many eyes will there be when two students stand here?" We continue in this way until the class understands that we are not only counting by twos, but also multiplying. We record equations on the board for each newly posed problem, using both repeated addition and a multiplication equation. Then the teams each are given a piece of chart paper to record things that come in groups other than two (from 3 to 12). Using these charts, students are then ready to write and illustrate their own multiplication stories. The stories will be typed and then illustrated by hand to put into a class book. By the end of grade three, students deepen their understanding of place value and their understanding of and skill with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. Students estimate, measure, and describe objects in space. They use patterns to help solve problems. They represent number relationships and conduct simple probability experiments.
