The Agency will foster the safe use of the state's waters through a program of law enforcement, education, and access. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has come a long way since it was established in 1949 and called the Game and Fish Commission. Completely reorganized in 1974, it now consists of more than 600 professionals dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and enhancement of Tennessee's fish and wildlife for the enjoyment of all Tennesseans and our visitors. Directed by a 13-member commission of private citizens appointed by the governor, the TWRA is unique among state agencies. Unlike most departments, which are supported by tax revenues, the TWRA is funded largely through the monies generated by licenses and permits purchased by hunters, anglers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Yet the Agency plays a major, though often unseen, role in the life of every Tennessean.

Extractions: About Virginia's Wildlife Regulations In order to manage wildlife populations effectively, not only must adjustments be made which respond to changed biological and environmental conditions, but the timeliness of the adjustments is very important as well. For this reason, the General Assembly exempts wildlife regulations from many of the requirements which apply to most other Virginia regulations. Many regulations require a year and a half, or more, of administrative steps before a change can be made and put into effect. Amendments to wildlife regulations, and the adjustments which they set in motion, can be made within a few months a capability which greatly benefits the management of highly dynamic wildlife populations. Extensive citizen participation is vital to the making of regulations which best serve the Virginia public, the wildlife resource, and which fulfill DGIF's wildlife management mission. In Mfuwe village itself, basic groceries only are available, if you are self catering we would advise shopping in Chipata for the duration of your stay in the valley. FUEL If you are driving up, carry as much fuel as possible. There is a BP fuel station here in Mfuwe, they do usually have petrol and diesel, but in case of lack of supply, it is always wise to carry a couple of full jerry cans with your own vehicle. Fuel is obviously more expensive out here as well. IMMIGRATION If you require assistance from customs or immigration officials during your stay in this part of Zambia, offices are available locally at Mfuwe airport or in Chipata town.

Extractions: Winona District Staff USFWS Photo The Winona District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge consists of Mississippi River bottomland from River Mile 763.5 at the mouth of the Chippewa River above Nelson, Wisconsin to Lock and Dam 6 at River Mile 714.3 near Trempealeau, Wisconsin. This area covers part of Pool 4 and all of Pools 5, 5a and 6 and includes lands and waters in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. About half of the District's 32,000 acres is owned by the Service in fee title; the remainder is Corps of Engineers property and is managed as a part of the Refuge under a cooperative agreement. Habitat includes wooded river bottomland of mostly silver maple, ash, elm, cottonwood and willow, backwater marshes of cattail, bulrush and other emergent and submergent plants, deep open water areas above each dam and numerous sloughs and channels. Significant biological areas include the Chippewa River Delta (Nelson-Trevino Bottoms) - a natural area of bottomland forest; Weaver Bottoms and Rieck's Lake Closed Area - important staging areas for tundra swans; and the Indian Slough/Big Lake backwater - a significant waterfowl migration and hunting area. Communities adjoining the District include Wabasha, Minnieska and Winona in Minnesota and Nelson, Alma, Fountain City and Trempealeau in Wisconsin.
