While the color of the faces may be different, the styles, of clothing, hair, slang, will largely be the same. Ninety percent of Native American students attend non-Indian schools, public or private, where culturally-aware teaching is lacking. Many believe the loss of traditional native knowledge and language is intimately related to the problems of high dropout rates and poor academic achievement - the achievement gap. "It's all tied up with identity and cultural dissonance," said Rosemary Christenson, professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Wisconsin and an Ojibwa Indian. "The effects of that cultural dissonance are widespread and continue to grow." The Oneida Nation's Youth Education Services division Friday held its third annual conference on maintaining partnerships between the tribe and area schools.

In all cases, the articles no longer exist at that address and/or have been transferred to the archives section of that publication. Thank you for your understanding. Like branches weighed down by a winter's heavy snowfall only to once again stand strong in spring, the twelve Indian nations of Wisconsin have been burdened with the weight of almost two hundred winters of traumatic events. But today, like branches coming to life in spring, Wisconsin Indian nations are once again standing strong. Culturally, politically and economically, the quality of life for many people of Wisconsin's Native nations is improving. Author Patty Loew, Ph.D., an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe has written a powerful and important new book, "Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal." In her book, Loew weaves together ancient songs, origin stories, art, symbolism, and wisdom with information based on the historical perspectives of Wisconsin's Native Peoples history of the last two hundred years. Also vitally important, is her inclusion of today's issuesóthe positive improvements along with the ongoing struggles over treaty rights, and environmental and sovereignty issues.

With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. A second division of the Western province became necessary, and on 19 March, 1895, the Southern province was formed, with its motherhouse in St. Louis. Training of Members SR. MARY JOSEPHINE

Extractions: A short article highlighting developments in Indian education and overviews past enrollments in schools serving Indians. The author believes, as tribal economic opportunities increase, the need for boarding schools will be lessened and the public schools will experience an increase in enrollment. The author also concludes that in the future we will see more tribal contract schools coming into existence and more tribal participation in public school systems. SUMMER CAMPING WITH AMERICAN INDIAN YOUTH: REPORT FROM CAMP NANA-MAH The article outlines (1) the opportunities at Camp NaNa-Mah, located near the Uintah-Ouray Indian reservation, for children to be campers, youth to be staff and (2) the opportunities provided by the Camp to enhance the educational, emotional, and social and cultural functioning of the children and youth. The authors cite the need for year-round consistency in funding. The authors also believe a closer liaison between tribal and local school officials would help reduce gaps in service and provide greater alternatives to traditional educational techniques. Eleven elements of the camp program are outlined.

Extractions: University of Wisconsin women's rowing coach Mary Browning watches the action as her team practices in the tank at the boathouse in Madison. But if the University of Wisconsin women's open-weight rowing coach ever did go that route, the ad might read like this: "Wanted: Tall, strong, athletic women to participate in varsity water sport. Benefits include travel, companionship and potential scholarship. Apply at Wisconsin boathouse on Lake Mendota daily after class. No experience necessary. Will train." If Browning is creative she might add another line to her ad. "Opportunity, opportunity, opportunity." Rowing is billed as the oldest sport at the University of Wisconsin with records of competitions dating to 1874, but it is being rediscovered in Madison and around the country for a very good reason. Title IX has created a need for women's team scholarship sports to balance the scales of gender equity. Programs are popping up everywhere. Even at Arizona State, in the middle of the desert, there are plans to flood a dry gulch and have both oars in the water by 2002.
