This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

Most universities offer certification programs. Certification requirements vary from state-to-state, but one may transfer certification to another state relatively easily once it is obtained. Extractions: A total of 480 cases of mumps (epidemic parotitis) were reported among students attending 16 universities and colleges in three states where active surveillance was undertaken during the 1986-87 academic year. This report summarizes the investigations of these outbreaks. Illinois One hundred and eighty-three cases of clinically diagnosed mumps* were reported from 10 colleges and universities in Illinois during the 1986-87 school year. Detailed investigations, including interviews with patients, were conducted for three of these outbreaks, which totaled 123 cases. Four cases were serologically confirmed at the state laboratory by a fourfold or greater rise in hemagglutination inhibition antibody titer of sera taken during the acute and convalescent stages of illness. Western Illinois University, Macomb: From September 17, 1986, to February 25, 1987, 37 cases of parotitis were identified at Western Illinois University (WIU), which has a full-time undergraduate student enrollment of 8,912 (Figure 1). The attack rate among males (5.9/1,000) was 2.7 times higher than the attack rate among females (2.2/1,000) (95 confidence interval (CI) = 1.3, 5.5). In addition, the attack rate among students living in on-campus residence halls ( 6.5/1,000) was 8 times the attack rate among those in other forms of housing (0.8/1,000) (CI = 3.0, 21.6). Of the 36 patients for whom school class was known, attack rates were inversely related to the class level. These rates were 7.0/1,000 for freshmen, 4.2/1,000 for sophomores, 1.6/1,000 for juniors, and 1.5/1,000 for seniors (chi-square for trend, p less than0.001). A similar trend was observed for the subset of students living in dormitory housing (p less than0.03).

Extractions: PRIMARY SOURCES In an effort to compile as complete a listing possible for students who were enrolled at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Barbara Landis and Genevieve Bell are collaborating in their research work. Bell spent nine months at the National Archives (NARA) developing a database of the student folders in Record Group 75, File 1327. Landis has taken the names found in the weekly/monthly publications, photograph albums, and census records, and refined them for inclusion with Bell's NARA list. The list is organized by nation. Learning finger songs at Carlisle Indian School ca 1900 Landis and Bell recommend the following sources for those interested in learning more about the Carlisle Indian School, the dozens of off-reservation boarding schools modeled after Carlisle, and the assimilationist movement of the late-19th / early 20th Centuries. Comments are the opinions of Landis and/or Bell. CARLISE INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES What follows is a list of the newspapers published by the United States Indian School, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. These primary sources are highly propagandistic. They were written by Indian School students as part of their Printing Training, under the heavy editorial eye of the school administrators, especially the founding father, Richard Henry Pratt, whose tenure at Carlisle covered the period from 1879 until his dismissal in 1904. Each issue of the monthly magazines espoused some philosophical article pertaining to the merits of assimilation and/or allotment. The weeklies typically held news items for events at the school and of students who participated. Also included in these was news of former students chronicling their lives as reported in their letters back to "dear old Carlisle." As you will see below, the names of these papers changed frequently and tracking this is somewhat confusing:

Extractions: ("Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978") The wholesale separation of Indian children from their families is perhaps the most tragic and destructive aspect of American Indian life today. Surveys of States with large Indian populations conducted by the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) in 1969 and again in 1974 indicate that approximately 25-35 percent of all Indian children are separated from their families and placed in foster homes, adoptive homes, or institutions. In some States the problem is getting worse: in Minnesota, one in every eight Indian children un 18 years of age is living in an adoptive home; and, in 1971-72, nearly one in every four Indian children under 1 year of age was adopted. The Federal boarding school and dormitory programs also contribute to the destruction of Indian family and community life. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), in its school census for 1971, indicates that 34,538 children live in its institutional facilities rather than at home. The represents more than 17 percent of the Indian school age population of federally-recognized reservations and 60 percent of the children enrolled in BIA schools. On the Navajo Reservation, about 20,000 children or 90 percent of of the BIA school population in grades K-12, live at boarding schools. A number of Indian children are also institutionalized in mission schools, training schools, etc.

Hi, My name is Joe. I am in fifth grade. I like my school because there are kids like me who are Native Americans. Others kids are the descendents of white settlers, and some are the descendents of slaves. We share the stories of the history of our families so we can understand each other better. I like to go to pow wows with my family. Pow wows are times when I can see other indian friends and share the rituals of our people. I also like to talk with my grandfather. He tells me stories about indians in Michigan a long time ago. The first story I would like to share with you is a legend about food. Remember, at one time there were no grocery stores in Michigan. People had to grow or hunt for everything they ate. Because food is so important, they made up interesting stories about their food.
