"Parenting is Prevention" Teleconferencing Initiative: 1999 Calendar The Campaign in the Community: The Wisconsin National Guard Rope Climbing? Adventure Activities? Obstacle Courses? Not traditional methods for keeping kids away from drugs. But, the Wisconsin National Guard isn't a traditional drug abuse prevention advocate. In its efforts to fundamentally change both behavior patterns and public opinion on drug use, the campaign is branching out into the field. The ONDCP has been working closely with state and local officials across the country to establish, maintain, and heighten the profile of community programs that advance campaign objectives. The early results from these partnerships have been rewarding and appear promising for the future. The work of the National Guard in relation to drugs traditionally was centered on reducing the availability of illegal drugs. The Guard has been active in providing support to local law enforcement intelligence efforts, and assisting in training law enforcement personnel. However, in keeping pace with national models of drug control and prevention, the Wisconsin National Guard Drug Control Program has been implementing new and innovative ways to assist schools and community organizations to keep youth drug-free.

Extractions: By Herbert H. Peters Creating the County Early Settlers Farms and Mills Industries Develop ... Overview When the white men first came to this land now known as Ozaukee County, they found the native Menomonee, Pottawatomi, Sac and Fox Indian tribes of the Algonquin nation living peacefully in a land of outstanding natural beauty. Dense forests of hardwoods and evergreens covered the rolling hills. In the many valleys were streams of clear, cool, ever flowing water threading their way to the sandy shore of Lake Michigan. Between 1670 and 1680, the first white men to visit this land were the French traders, LaSalle and Joliet. They came down the west shore of Lake Michigan to establish trading and military posts in the name of France, and the Jesuits, Allouez, Hennepin and Marquette, to bring Christianity to the native red men. No definite settlement of the territory was made by France, however, and in 1761 she yielded her rights to the English who claimed possession until after the Revolutionary War. By the Treaty of 1835, the Indian tribes gave up their homeland and were moved to the country west of the Mississippi.

Extractions: The Navy gets the weather and the Air Force gets the helicopters. That's the result of a deal struck between Navy Secretary Gordon England and Air Force Secretary James Roche to transfer the Naval Postgraduate School's aeronautical engineering department to the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. In return, the Air Force Institute will move its meteorological and military acquisition and procurement curricula to the Navy school in Monterey. A memorandum of agreement was signed by England and Roche on Wednesday. The agreement was described as an "alliance" between the two service schools by Lt. Cmdr. Joe Navratil, spokesman for NPS. Under the agreement, the Navy school will offer meteorology and courses in military acquisition, which were once offered at the Air Force Institute, and the institute will take over aeronautical engineering education, he said.
Extractions: The Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute received millions of federal dollars in order to spruce up their Monterey campuses, Rep. Sam Farr announced today. DLI received $1.4 million to improve drainage around its facilities. The Navy school received more than $9 million to begin replacing Spanagel Hall and a fence around campus. The money came from a $393 billion Department of Defense bill, which funds military construction and family housing, wages and other benefits for service members. Also Thursday, Congress granted $75,000 to the Fort Ord Reuse Authority to use toward building houses at Fort Ord. The money came from last year's spending bill for two congressional committees on which Farr sits. FORA will use the money to design housing programs at Fort Ord, said Michael Houlemard, the agency's executive director. email this print this
Extractions: Graduates of conventional high schools who enlist in the military have advantages over high school dropouts who enlist. Until recently, the military treated homeschoolers like dropouts if they did not have a "third party diploma" from a recognized school or program outside the homeschooler's own home. In an attempt to make it possible for homeschool graduates to enlist in the military with the same advantages as graduates of conventional high schools, a five-year pilot program has been started in which graduates of homeschools will be treated the same way as graduates of conventional high schools. (Note: The pilot program also extends the same privileges to graduates of ChalleNGe programs sponsored by the National Guard for high school dropouts.) According to the federal law that established the pilot program, a young person qualifies for the pilot program if "the person is a home school diploma recipient and provides a transcript demonstrating completion of high school to the military department involved under the pilot program." Extractions: Ask Kerri Moser whether the military buildup toward a war with Iraq has affected her life, and the 20-year-old western Wisconsin woman answers a resounding "yes." Moser married National Guard Pfc. Dave Moser just days after he was activated for duty Jan. 22. "We had a wedding planned for May 1, 2004. We were just kind of worried something might happen," the new bride said. Across Wisconsin, hundreds of families must deal with the turmoil of loved ones being called to active duty as President Bush threatens war with Iraq to disarm the country of weapons of mass destruction. Some Wisconsin troops already are poised for battle in the Middle East. "It is hard not to be worried," said Karen Kendziorski, 24, of Milwaukee, whose boyfriend, Marine Reservist Cpl. Steve Kaltenbrun, left in late January for Camp Pendleton, Calif., and has since been shipped to Kuwait, just south of Iraq. "He is a smart guy. He will do what it takes to be safe," she said.
