PRINT THIS STORY Last Updated: July 18, 2001 at 7:16:22 a.m. Almost two-thirds of white students in Wisconsin do not attend school with a black student, following a national trend toward resegregation, a Harvard University study said. The study, released Tuesday, measured school populations based on race between 1980 and 1998 in 28 states. Wisconsin and Rhode Island showed the greatest increases in segregation, the study said. In Wisconsin, an average of 30.5 percent of white students attended schools with black students during the 1998-99 school year, down from an average of 44.5 percent in 1980, the study said. In Rhode Island, the average percentage declined to 43.4 percent from 65.8 percent. Wisconsin was ranked 11th most segregated in the study, which looked at the percentage of blacks in mostly white schools, the percentage of blacks in schools where the student body was at least 90 percent minority and the average percentage of whites in schools attended by blacks.

They are joining almost 900 schools nationwide that will participate in the grass roots effort this year. LOCAL OBSERVANCES Marc Korobkin, a senior with the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Nicolet High School in Glendale, says that 300 students at his school plan to participate in the Day of Silence. Wisconsin IN Step Korobkin said he hopes the event will help to promote dialogue about the difficulties faced by LGBT students. He thinks that organizing for the Day of Silence has already facilitated greater discussion by administrators at his school. The Day of Silence Project encourages students, especially in high schools, to approach administrators to share their ideas and seek approval and cooperation in planning the day. Korobkin and fellow students submitted a detailed proposal, along with the signatures of 80 teachers and letters of support from parents to gain official support for their action. Rachel Federlin, a senior at Riverside High School in Milwaukee, says the administration there has been very supportive and that between 85 and 100 students will join the Day of Silence at her school.

Extractions: The Scopes for Schools program is a low-cost, field-tested model for professional astronomers to conduct outreach, curriculum development, and teacher professional development in astronomy. The program is aimed at minority and other underserved students (but all students may participate), with an emphasis on curriculum development and on professional development for teachers. Teacher participants benefit from: Student participants benefit from astronomy activities that are inquiry- and standards-based, and from a hands-on experience building and using telescopes and digital cameras. Motivation: A significant factor in the under-representation of minorities in science is the lack of adequate exposure during the K-12 years to meaningful (i.e. "real") experiences in science. In astronomy, this results from a combination of little-to-no teacher training in basic astronomy, and from lack of curricular and other resources. The Panthers tallied 37 McCafferty points, one point behind league-champion UIC. Butler tied UWM with 37 points. UWM captured league championships in men's swimming and diving, volleyball (regular season) and baseball (regular season) during the 1999-2000 campaign. UWM's two indoor track and field titles and one outdoor track and field title did not count in the standings, as only four league schools sponsor the sport. The UWM men accounted for 18 points and finished the year in a three-way tie for first place with UIC and Butler. The UWM women scored 19 points, just two points behind first-place Wright State's 21 points.
