Extractions: Home Illinois Indiana Minnesota ... References The information in this section is based on responses from 99 Wisconsin teachers who began their teaching careers during the 1994-95 school year and who were still teaching in 1999-2000. This sample was chosen to be representative of the entire 1994-95 population of newly hired Wisconsin teachers (1,882 teachers). All 99 teachers were asked to indicate the availability of, and their satisfaction with, 21 characteristics associated with teaching. The teachers then were asked to rate the importance of each characteristic for their decision to continue teaching. Table 1 shows the eight characteristics that the novice Wisconsin teachers judged to be important to their decision to continue their teaching career, the percentage of teachers indicating the perceived importance of each job characteristic, and the percentage indicating satisfaction with each job characteristic. It shows some of the disincentives for beginning teachers to continue teaching in Wisconsin. Table 1. Andrew Kuemmel, a computer resources teacher at Edgerton High School, was one of 924 teachers in 37 states to achieve the honor this month. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certifies teachers who have passed a rigorous, year-long performance-based assessment. Kuemmel is currently a computer resources teacher, but has decided to return to the classroom as a high school math teacher. Kuemmel said the rigorous NBPTS process was worth the time and effort. WEAC President Terry Craney said Kuemmel is an inspiration to other teachers in Wisconsin.
Extractions: International Employment for Teachers Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
