Extractions: Oct. 18-25, 2002 Volume 6, Number 7 German educators focus on "quality" in scrutiny of Wisconsin schools Wisconsin high schools, middle schools, and vocational schools were under close scrutiny the past two weeks as two groups of German educators filed through corridors, attended school board meetings, and taught German language and international marketing classes. As part of Wisconsin's partnership with Hessen, its sister state in Germany, the educators were here to widen their international knowledge of education. The theme of one group, 12 educators hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, was "Quality and Equality: Standards and Standardization in Wisconsin Schools." The second group, 25 vocational educators hosted by the Wisconsin Technical College System, looked at a wide range of issues affecting vocational education. A PISA (Program for International Student Assessment: Knowledge and Skills for Life) study, released earlier this year, compared scores of 265,000 students in 32 industrialized countries. Both the U.S. and Germany scored below the 50th percentile, with students compared in science, mathematics, and reading literacy. Both countries' educators are engaged in wide-ranging debate and school-improvement proposals with parents, legislators, and business leaders.

Extractions: Home Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College 2000-2001 Fact Book HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE The Wisconsin Indianhead Vocational, Technical and Adult Education District was created on July 1, 1972. WITC is the largest of 16 districts encompassing 20% (10,900 square miles) of the state in northwest Wisconsin. Campuses are located in Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake and Superior. The district's administrative offices are located in Shell Lake. Campuses in existence before the district was formed were established as a result of the statutes enacted in 1911 by the Wisconsin Legislature, which required vocational schools to be established in cities with populations of 6,000 or more. Consequently, the city of Superior (1912) was the first location in northwest Wisconsin, and the second in the state, in which a technical school was founded. Schools were also established in Ashland (1921) and Rice Lake (1941). In 1965 the Wisconsin Legislature enacted the Wisconsin Area District Law. This Law (Chapter 292, Laws of 1965) required a "master plan" to be developed by the Wisconsin Board of Vocational, Technical and Adult Education (VTAE) creating districts in the state by July 1, 1970. On July 1, 1967, District 18, consisting of Burnett, Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties, was approved for operation. The District had a population of 87,000; a total area of 3,450 square miles; and 22 school districts operating within its boundaries. Because no central facilities were available, a limited number of vocational courses were offered in area high schools, the emphasis being on agricultural programs.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND THE WORLD OF WORK A crucial factor in the formation of vocational identity is self-esteem. McDonald and Jessell (1992) found that those seventh and eighth graders who believed a variety of careers were possible for themselves had high self-esteem, could assess complex career information, and were primarily female, of middle to high socioeconomic status, and from two-parent families. Although boys thought most jobs were appropriate for either sex, 75% were unwilling to make nontraditional choices for themselves (ibid.). Although females appear more open to nontraditional careers at this age, middle school girls begin to feel the effects of gender bias on their aspirations (Silverman and Pritchard 1994). These findings suggest that middle school students need to learn to think about the future; recognize their responsibility for educational planning; broaden their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level; develop and maintain self-esteem; develop cognitive complexity (essential for the knowledge work of the future); have parental support for career choices; understand how school relates to future life roles; and recognize the broad scope of work in the 21st century.
