I mention organization and service because MIT does not have a Women's Center or LBGT Center so the Program helps connect students to the necessary resources where possible. I also supervise students ( link ) as the Coordinator for the Women's Studies Program. Since we are an intimate program, quite probably the smallest undergraduate academic unit in the Institute, I get to know many of the students who concentrate in Women's Studies, and definitely all of the students who minor and major in our program. Additionally, I get to know the UROP women, since all of the Women's Studies paperwork and payroll is handled by me. I keep in touch with former students and delight in their news. Many have been double majors combining everything from Physics to Brain and Cognitive Science to Chemical Engineering with Women's Studies.

Extractions: The notion of 'respectability' reigned supreme in the late Victorian age and women especially were expected to uphold and live by it. Their place was supposed to be in the home - the 'domestic angel' - and yet the 1901 census reported that 31.6% of females over the age of 10 were in paid employment. Who were these women and what work did they do? The 1901 census found that less than one-third of women were in paid employment. However, this statistic is almost certainly underestimated because work done in the home often went unrecorded. Most women who undertook paid employment in 1901 did so because they had to. Widowhood, for members of the working classes, almost always meant penury; some women felt the need to boost the family income because their husbands were unemployed or poorly paid; others worked because they had no other family members to support them. There were, of course, some women who worked to maintain their independence, but they were in a minority. The paid work undertaken by women was varied. The 1901 census recorded women employed as lawyers' clerks, physicians, dentists or dental assistants, teachers, authors, journalists and shorthand writers. However, the vast majority - nearly 80% - were in domestic and other services or in manufacture (usually connected to textiles).

To apply it requires examining their respective roles, the changing nature of the family, the differential impact of economic and financial policy, the use of legislation, and the empirical bases for assessing progress. Assessing equal opportunities in the European Union Janneke PLANTENGA and Johan HANSEN To usefully evaluate the extent of equal opportunity demands innovative methodology. The authors select indicators of the relative opportunities of men and women (the "gender gap"), including differences in employment, wages, and the sharing of unpaid work; and also indicators of women's absolute situation in the labour market. These indicators are then estimated empirically for 15 Member States, with highly revealing results. To close the circle, the main determinants of equal opportunity are posited including the rate of economic growth, tax systems, working-time regimes, childcare facilities and parental leave arrangements. Seeing country performance in that light produces compelling lessons for policy.
