CityBeat: Sports: When The Going Gets Tough... (2001-02-08) St. Joseph's is rated 29th by the writers, 39th by the coaches and 40th bythe RPI. It's not that turning pro early is bad for basketball players. http://www.citybeat.com/2001-02-08/sports.shtml
Extractions: The tough turn pro, and college basketball is suffering because of it By Bill Peterson While one great player makes a huge difference in the NBA, the effect goes at least double in college basketball, where the distance is much greater between the top players and the mediocre. So, where are today's great college basketball players? If you're trying to pick the Player of the Year, you have choices like Duke's Shane Battier, Stanford's Casey Jacobsen, North Carolina's Joseph Forte and Notre Dame's Troy Murphy. They're all good players, but it's a long way from choosing between Bird and Magic or Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon. Meanwhile, some of the fellows you can't pick for Player of the Year are Tracy McGrady, Lamar Odom, Elton Brand and Chris Mihm. They're among 31 players in today's NBA who would still be college eligible if they had done the four-year plan. That's nearly 10 percent of the NBA population, almost three full rosters. And it doesn't include about two dozen others who put themselves up for early draft and couldn't make the grade. Players have been declaring hardship and going pro early for more than three decades. But it used to be about 10 players every year, and they weren't all picked. Last spring, 29 players from American colleges and high schools put themselves up for early draft and 18 were selected in a two-round exercise.

Extractions: A ntiwar sentiment is on the rise, but is the antiwar movement? A steadily increasing number of Americans oppose invading Iraq, and a full two-thirds want to see a " smoking gun " before we set a course for empire. Around the world, opposition is overwhelming, not only in the Middle East (except Israel), but throughout Europe. The United Kingdom is especially boiling over with rage at Blair, not only from the Labor left but also from the "Britain first" right . The image of Tony Blair frantically wagging his tail and begging for a bone from Washington is universally unappealing. A number of demonstrations are planned over the next two months, and, here in America, where the majority oppose a unilateral attack , it seems as if a day hardly goes by without the announcement of a new coalition of antiwar groups, one more "mainstream" than the last.

Guild Of Food Writers with the Guild of Food writers' prometric version use them, because converting recipesmeans turning the clock The New Guidelines for Food writers tables, by http://users.aol.com/footrule/foodwrit.htm
Extractions: For twenty years, most recipes published in the UK have included metric units beside the Imperial ones, and for twenty years, most people have chosen to ignore them. Then, at their 1995 AGM, the Guild of Food Writers voted to do away with Imperial measures altogether, and to publish only in metric from that day forward. It is not known how many (or how few) writers were present at the AGM, but the vote, according to the Guild, was unanimous. After the vote there were a handful of high-profile conversions to the metric-only cause ( The Sunday Times The Evening Standard, The Observer ); but despite these, and despite the apparently 'unanimous' support for metrication, most newspapers and books, and many broadcasters, continue to use Imperial. Why should this be? Partly this can be put down to market forces: the public remain as hostile to having metric-only recipes forced on them as they always have been; and publishers are unwilling to sacrifice profit for political correctness. But there is a second explanation: could it be that food writers themselves are not as unanimously pro-metric as the Guild claims them to be? Could it be that the metric-only policy (and the attendance at the 1995 AGM) was primarily the work of a small group of active busybodies? New Guidelines for Food Writers Here's what we found: (1) Most of Britain's food writers don't prefer to work in metric.

Breaking Into The Erotica Market - By Magdalene Meretrix Write some fan mail to let your favorite writers know what you liked about Her firstbook, turning pro A Guide to Sexwork for the Ambitious and the Intrigued http://www.katyterrega.com/breakingin.html
Extractions: Most sex-writers realize pretty early in the game that out-and-out porn pays better than "literary erotica." But that doesn't mean that you should hang up your aspirations if you truly prefer writing for the erotica market. There are a number of erotica writers who are making a living writing erotica. What is their secret? Here are a few pointers to help you break into the market. 1 - Don't be afraid to write outside your chosen genre. For example, I write erotica, "essayrotica" (a term coined by Hanne Blank to describe Erotic Literary Non-Fiction essays), and non-fiction/how-to on topics of a sexual nature. Writing in each of these genres has boosted my sales in the others. Anything you write will get your name out there. As an aspiring erotica writer, you want name recognition. 2 - Don't be afraid to give your work away. There was a point when I felt bitter about giving so much work away. That was before I realized that most professional erotica writers list the publications where they've been published and, in most cases, half or more of those publications were non-paying. You want to be able to cite a long list of publications and you want your writing to spread far and wide - name recognition gets your foot in the door. Many of the non-paying markets have high-quality editors. I submitted a piece to a non-paying market and was told that I should make drastic changes. I balked, figuring a non-paying market couldn't possibly understand the high-quality I had produced. I took the piece to a well-known, professional, paying market. The first thing the editor told me? To make the exact same changes!
