One of the most common of the literary competitions is the essay contest. In an essay contest, a central idea or theme is given to the writers and they are given a specified amount of time in which to produce their best work. The winner is usually determined by criteria such as persuasiveness, style, and technical writing ability. Awards in literature are usually given to the best work in a particular genre. Works receiving awards usually represent groundbreaking ideas in literature or an exemplary ability to communicate the author's thoughts to the readership. The links included herein relate specifically to literary contests and competitions.

The impulse to create, to realize form and order out of mere matter, is universal and perpetual. Such artwork can include visual art, literature, music, dance, and other forms. Children's arts are the arts of everyone. Most contemporary readers understand that both our lives and our literature are shaped by the shifting dynamics of many factors especially race, ethnicity, class, gender, nationality and cultural differences. Extractions: Links There are hundreds of literary contests, online and off. Most are real; some are even prestigious. But many are fake. And of the legitimate ones, few are important enough to provide a meaningful addition to your writing resume. Contest Fakes Fake contests come in many different guises, but they all have a common goalto take your money. Some are outright scams. For instance, one fee-charging literary agency advertises a contest where the prize is agency representation. Representation is indeed offered (to everyone who enters), but the catch is that it comes with a hefty editing fee attached. Another agency uses a false name to run its contestentrants are told that even though they didn't win their work is "exceptional", and referred to the agency, which charges an up-front fee. Other contests are run by questionable publishers. Often the prize is a book contract, and the winners don't find out until afterward that they must pay a fee for publication, or agree to pre-purchase large numbers of books, or pay the publisher for a publicity campaign (a good reason never to enter a contest that doesn't allow you to refuse a contract if it's offered). Or the publisher may give the list of entrants to a vanity publishing service or a fee-charging literary agency, which then sends out solicitations and pays the first publisher a kickback if any of the entrants bite.

Extractions: Another experience which helps students in the college admission process is showing that they are "risk-takers." This can be seen by their participating in summer enrichment programs, and also by entering student contests and competitions. This might include competitions in the performing or visual arts, writing, math, science - and there are opportunities in all of these and many other areas of competition. Our school participates in several academic team competitions. One is ongoing throughout the school year - Academic Challenge - and is coached by Mr. and Mrs. McCrae. The team practices weekly for its competitions with teams from other schools. We also participate in the national Knowledge Master competition on the junior and senior high level. The ninth grade gifted students compose the junior team, which competes twice yearly. There are many other opportunities for students to enter academics contests - especially writing in all sorts of forms - poetry, short stories, plays, essays, etc. Many involve cash prizes, but all help the students gain self confidence as they become willing to put their own talents in competition with those talents of other students. Colleges look for risk takers and academic contests and competitions allow students to show that they take risks and are confident in their abilities to succeed. This year we have had a number of students compete in a variety of contests.

Extractions: I never want to judge a contest like this again the entries were all too good this time there was simply no way to represent and honor all the talented entries. If you made the HMs, you are doing a lot of things right if you made the semi-finals, you are doing everything right if you are a winner, I don't know why your song (or you as an artist) isn't in a deal of somekind you are honestly that great. Contest prize DiskOnKey! The entries submitted to this contest were exceptional! Judging was never so hard. The SEMI FINAL winners posted to the right are the songs and interpretations that were outstanding among entries that were also outstanding. I have no idea how we will choose from among these entries for awards. Every entry, finalist or not, was spectacular, in some way. If you are NOT among the semifinalists (and eventually Final Winners), do not think it neccessarily reflected your TALENT or ABILITY.
