Helping teachers teach writing By Barbara McKenna Walk into Suzanne Brady's fourth-grade classroom at Monte Vista School in Monterey and it may take a moment to pick her out of the group. "I used to have the children sit in straight rows, and I was at the front," says Brady, who has been teaching since the late 1950s. "Now it's hard to find me in the classroom. I'm no longer the authority. Now we have 29 teachers, and I just happen to be the tallest." Coauthor of the book Mindful of Others: Teaching Children to Teach, Brady dramatically altered her teaching style in 1977, inspired by her experience at a UCSC summer institute on teaching writing. "I learned so much that summer that I knew there was no way I could go back and teach the way I had before," she says. The institute Brady attended was the first offered by the campus's Central California Writing Project (CCWP), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this summer. Like its sister programs at seven other UC campuses, CCWP exists to improve the teaching of writing in California's schools. The project offers a range of programs, from the five-week invitational instituteoffered in both English and Spanishto a myriad of other workshops and retreats. Funding is provided by UCSC's Humanities Division, UC's Office of the President, and the California and National Writing Projects.

Extractions: Michael Conte, Jr. Government studies over the last few years have indicated to educators that student ability to write has been in a steady decline. Standardized test scores, and tests in which students must demonstrate a mastery of different writing techniques, spotlight these deficiencies and bring them glaringly out to the publics awareness. Writing is a powerful tool which allows us to communicate with one another in a clear, exact and meaningful way. Why then do students not like to write? Have the telephone and television been the instruments of destruction? Possibly? Probably? Most Likely? Definitely? No!!! We, as educators are faced with the responsibilities of teaching students to write and express themselves well, through various forms of written expression. We are faced with the task of exploring new ways to allow students to develop their writing skills. In the middle schools we give the students many writing assignments in which we, red marker in hand, inspect for the fine points of punctuation, observe structure, correct the spelling errors and check for content. This unit on writing is suggested for use in the upper middle school grades (7-8) with advanced students in an English or Writing class. This unit will also engage the students in a further study of narrative, descriptive and expository writing. The approximate duration should be from 6-8 weeks, culminating with an exposition of class work or some sort of school publication.

Search Amazon.com This review by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in Teaching K-8 Magazine Robert and Marlene McCracken's book is far from new, but it has some wonderful techniques for helping readers interact with text. Many books tell you to use the same chant, rhyme or predictable text over and over. The McCracken's book gives concrete suggestions as to what to do with it so that maximum learning and minimum boredom takes place. Many of their activities concern early readers, but here's one for readers of any age. Pointing out that many poor readers don't know how to bring information to a text in order to get information from it, they dust off the old cloze technique and use it creatively. They select a text such as the following and leave blanks where a variety of words would do. Readers supply alternatives and these are written down in lists for each blank.

Extractions: Nearly a year ago, in an attempt to improve the writing skills of MIT students, the Committee on the Writing Requirement proposed to expand the number of departmental writing practica, six-unit satellite classes attached to certain research and design subjects. Today, after two semesters of drastic practica expansion, administrators seem to agree that practica might be effective in improving writing but also acknowledge that practica are only a small part of the larger solution towards improving writing skills at MIT. The writing practica were an extension of the technical writing cooperative and were designed to be more adaptable and focus on communication skills, said Leslie C. Perelman, associate dean of undergraduate affairs and director of the writing practica program. "Classes meet once a week for two hours, and assignments are closely allied with assignments in the engineering class," he said. Like the technical writing cooperative, which offers instruction through lectures in an engineering context, the writing practica can also be used to fulfill phase two of the writing requirement.

P hysicists with a penchant for communicating science to the public received a crash course in the fundamentals of writing for the general interest media during special workshops held at both the March and April meetings of the APS. Originally suggested by a special APS task force on informing the public, the workshops were hosted by Robert Park, APS Director of Public Affairs, whose weekly electronic newsletter "What's New" reports on science policy developments and other science-related public issues. He is the author of numerous articles and editorials for the general media, as well as the recently released book, Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud (see APS News , March 2000) Park drew on his considerable experience and success in this area to offer helpful tips to scientists aspiring to write for their local media, from the generation of an idea to the finished product. Not surprisingly, breaking in is the hardest step in the process. Aspiring writers can either write an Op-Ed and call an editor to discuss and gauge the level of interest, length, etc., or call to "pitch" a potential Op-Ed - something which can be difficult for first-time writers. A guaranteed formula for failure is to send out articles blindly to an editor without making personal contact. The ability to "write to length" - that is, produce a specific number of words to fit available space-is a highly valued quality, and over-writing is a common mistake. "An editor knows how much space he has, and sometimes he will edit down an Op-Ed, but he may also reject it because of the extra work," said Park. Editors also tend not to accept "pleading" articles simply asking for more funding because "science is good." There needs to be a powerful issue under debate to draw their interest. Park has found that the strongest hooks tend to be related to safety or effectiveness of consumer products, such as the power line cancer scare or magnet therapy. While these might not form the substance of the Op-Ed, they are a good "news peg" to draw the interest of the reader and concretely illustrate one's points, he said.
