5-0 out of 5 stars Great Painting Composition Information
I bought this book after having borrowed it from the library.I felt it is an excellent reference for both beginner and more advanced watercolorists.

5-0 out of 5 stars watercolor fanatic
This artists is a master in color and composition, shadow and light.Highly recommendable for transparant watercoloring. Realistic but at the same time expressionist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make your best watercolors even better.
While there are many wonderful books available about other aspects of watercolor, this book is unique in its emphasis on the way that shape, line, value and color can be combined to create the desired visual flow toa well-positioned center of interest. The many color illustrationsdemonstrate how attention to composition makes the difference between apleasant-enough painting (perhaps with beautifully done elements), versus apainting that really comes together as a cohesive and compellingwhole.

The book is well-organized into lessons which build on each other. Becker writes clear instructions and provides beautiful illustrations todemonstrate every point. For example, on just one page he takes us fromthe original reference photo of a street work crew, through black and whiteversions, to his finished painting, showing (as well as describing) how hechanged the value contrast and colors to improve the overall composition.

Watercolor Composition Made Easy does an excellent job of presenting"rules" for placement of the elements of a painting, and it alsodoes much more.It addresses the familiar watercolor considerations suchas blurred versus hard edges, light and dark values, the color wheel, andperspective, but always in terms of how they contribute to the overallcomposition. This book also provides many miscellaneous tips which Beckerhas developed in his extensive career. For example, I found thedescription of (and sample sketches from) his portable sketching setup tobe particularly intriguing and helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Splash Again
Sometimes Rachel Rubin Wolf"s Splash books all seem to be one and the same. But each one really does have a different flavor to it.

This one is heavy on the still lifes: fruits, flowers, plants.

I am always inspired by Wolf's books. There are some paintings that are so well done that attaining that level seems impossible.Others seem easy and friendly enough to maybe attempt to do something similar and excel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splash 9
High quality reproductions. Excellent book for artists to see the techniques that others are using. Also the quality that would allow you to set it out for others to enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I have the whole series, which is the only reason that it was not 5 stars.
I have an earlier favorite. But this one is great in that you get to read the artists' thoughts on why or how.I've always been interested in what inspires other artists. This one gives me/us that.

2-0 out of 5 stars Splash - Time for a Change
If you like your watercolors with lots of intricate details and reflections in crystal, you'll like this latest Splash. If you're looking for something different, experimental and creative, don't bother. I have the entire series, and I'm thinking of reselling this one. (I won't be purchasing any future editions without checking them closely first.) The Splash series was quite cutting edge in the early years, striving to showcase the new trends. But it hasn't kept up. Now it just feels like a profit center for North Light.

Of 130 pages, only 12 pages (the shortest chapter) is devoted to experimental watermedia. And even then, one painting includes reflections in crystal (just so you don't stray too far...)

Publishers, it's time for a change. We need a new series for the 21st Century (edited by Betsy Dillard Stroud or Nita Leland?) devoted to the exciting trends in watermedia, mixed media, collage, monotypes, and digital hybrid art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost ...but not quite
With this ninth book in the remarkable Splash series I was rather disappointed. To me the strength of the previous eight books has been the remarkable diversity of painting styles.Even though each had a rather loose theme you could turn the pages and not really know what to expect apart from the fact that every picture was a watercolor. So many of the paintings just make you stop and look and look and frequently wonder how an artist achieved that painting.Luckily part of the editorial format in each book allowed artists to reveal their creative thoughts or techniques in words next to the picture.

All of this is true of book nine but I just didn't feel it had the excitement of the other books. Many of the paintings seem rather casual, the range of subject matter and composition perhaps too ordinary, safe and predictable and plenty seem to have sombre dominant colors, like the front cover for instance.Essentially I think that I've seen better versions of so many of these paintings in the previous eight titles.

Still there is plenty to enjoy though.Three from Laurin McCracken caught my eye, she likes to make things difficult by creating still life compositions with crystal glass and silverware.Equally interesting is how she works: with a digital camera and pc to improve the composition even before lifting a brush.Paul Sullivan creates some almost photo-realist paintings of everyday scenes from Milan, Rome and Sienna. His exterior detail of a church in Milan is amazing.Diane Maxey does wonders with flowers, so much so that her Poppy Parade looks just like an oil painting.

I've just looked through Splash 1/America's Best Contemporary Watercolors, which came out in 1991 and what an amazing start to the series and it does rather overpower this latest book.I'm hoping book ten will continue the magic so evident in the previous eight books.

2-0 out of 5 stars For those who can't DRAW
Take a load of old t shirts, dip them in paint and throw them at a canvas. Roll your car over the canvas several times.

Tear up some cardboard boxes, spill paint onto the torn pieces and press into a canvas. Use random colors as well. Blindfold yourself.

Stand on a ladder and drip paint onto paper or canvas lying on the floor. Throw feathers and macaroni into the drips.

Using a squirt gun filled with paint, stand back and "create" your painting by squirting it on. Rub your naked body into the wet paint. Dance in it.

THIS IS A BOOK FOR THOSE AFRAID TO DRAW OR PAINT. AFTER ALL, WALKING ON A CANVAS WITH PAINTED SHOES CAN BE "FUN" THEY SAY. WHO KNOWS, MAYBE LEARNING TO DRAW FROM NATURE IS JUST OLD-FASHIONED AND NOT WORTH THE EFFORT? I DOUBT THAT TO BE TRUE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for those doing abstract in watercolor
This is not your average watercolor book. It was recommended to me by an artist of some repute, who uses the principles to paint non-abstract, but very expressionistic watercolors.

Somewhere in the examples of various artists' works, you might find something to stimulate your own sense of the abstract. There are exercises to free up the imagination and use different ways of looking at composition or watercolor media to express new ideas. Not for those looking to do ultra-realism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antidote for cliches
I find this book a superb counter to the myriad watercolor books on the market. There is nothing wrong with the realistic painting those books encourage and teach, but the medium offers much more and this book opens up those other vistas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for starting a watercolor painting.
If your looking for different compositions to try out in watercolor, this books fits the bill.

I liked the great descriptions of compositional techniques which is followed by large color painting examples.

Some ofthe painting examples scream for you to do them better. What a challenge! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Judy Morris's "Watercolor Basic: Light" is Great!
This book is a gem. It is packed with great information and the exercises are easy to understand and do. There is good information on understanding what your watercolors do and how they work together. The info on working and understanding light is concise and easy to understand. All in all its a great resource to have in any artist library!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful how to book for watercolor
A Wonderful book - well written - Judy Morris gets right to the point in teaching about painting in watercolor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Learning Use of Light in Watercolor
Unfortunately this wonderful book is OP. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a workshop/demonstration by the author and what a talent and excellent teacher and this title is equally excellent.Well thought out and explained with useful demonstrations.Judy Morris shows you how to see light and shadow. I have purchased other books on the same topic and Judy's tomb tops them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes me en'light'en.
As a new watercolorist, I have a very serious problem about seeing light and shadow. No matter how my instructor tried to point them out. I hardly see and paint. After reading this book, my eyes are just opened and bring me to a new way of seeing light and shadow. I now understand what to look for and how to improve my rather 'flat' painting.

The explanation, samples, and instruction in this book are very useful, easy to follow, and practical. I would definitely, highly recommend this book to whom has problem of seeing or understanding nature of LIGHT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light in the Watercolor World
I read the book from start to end as soon as I got it in the mail and then again a couple of days later. It was so informative and has some excellent examples of what the author is describing verbally. The exercises are easy to follow and you learn so much from doing the exercises.I am enjoying the book very much and am looking for more from this author.Easy to read and understand but each time that I read it, I discovered more tidbits of knowledge.I probably would not recommend this book to advanced watercolorists but it was just PERFECT for my needs since I only just started the conversion from oil to watercolor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Start here if you are a beginning watercolor flower painter
It was sheer luck that I picked up this book. I had finished stenciling all my walls, all the wood in my house and was looking for a way to continue when I picked up this wonderful book. It's perfect for a beginner. I loved it and every painting lesson in it.She's clear, she goes at the reader's pace. This isn't for advanced artists or even hobbyists in watercolor of long standing, but it got me into the wonderful world of watercolor painting, a medium I had never tried.Jackson should write more books and give more advanced lessons.Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can paint flowers with Louise
When using this book I found it easy to understand the preliminary sketches and follow them quite easily. The explanations about colors, how to mix them in order to get shades and contrast are superbly explained. The materials used an how to handle them areclear, and "secrets" about which amount of water to use, the techniques of wet over wet and wet on dry are perfectly understandable and easy to follow. once you tested you learned al the "how tos" you can try your own design. Yet, I'd have liked to see more step to step indications if this publication was directed to beginners. This publication is a must for amateur and self-trained watercolorists but not for fresh beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's Generosity to Fledglings
Besides her obvious talent and teaching ability, Louise Jackson brings a generosity to her book that only someone who is completely secure in her life can do:she has given permission, in the introduction, for her book'students' to copy the work, sell it, enter it in competitions, as theirown. The only thing she asks is that she is mentioned somewhere, as in"after Louise Jackson" under the new artists name. She saysjudges and purchasers deserve to know that the DESIGN is not originalalthough your rendition is.How is that for sharing? The other thing Inoticed is the absence of the word, "I", without which most otherartists cannot begin a sentence.I have checked this out of the publiclibrary so often they have cut me off.Today I am buying the book fromAmazon. Thanks, Louise, for sharing all.

The instructions are very easy to follow, and the illustrations are beautiful, as will beyour painting if you follow the instructions. I looked at at least 6 otherbooks on painting watercolor flowers, but chose this one because of theease of the instructions. I highly recommend this book. Please note: as abeginner, I am choosy because many art instruction books are simply over myhead at this stage. This one is not, but will make you feel like aprofessional artist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I found this book while searching for a book on acrylic painting, and was struck by the beautiful images of Nita's paintings. Although her work is representational of particular places, it reflects a deep spirituality and feeling for those places. Nita's technique and use of color are amazing. The book is extremely well-written, inspirational, and contains much technical advice on watercolor painting that can also be applied to acrylic painting. Even if one has no interest in painting for themselves, it is definitely worth having just as a picture-book. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
Painting or drawing classes teach certain necessary skills in the time available, but there is a need to have a useful reference when working between classes. After all, the way to learn to paint or draw is to paint or draw pictures. There is no shortage of books on both media, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. In the case of watercolour, artists have widely differing styles. It is helpful to read their advice, but potentially confusing as well.A book by an artist whose style is markedly divergent from that being taught in class is really of little help, and can be a hindrance to acquiring the necessary understanding and psychomotor skill before developing one's own style.Occasionally one discovers a book that seems to strike it just right: "Mastering the Art of Watercolor" is just such a book.Pages 6-95 cover the whole gamut of basic knowledge of media and techniques in just the right amount of detail.Pages 96-249 present a series of projects covering the major genre or areas of particular difficulty. The book is beautifully produced.Importantly, the book is illustrated with an adequate number of step-by-step illustrations (lack of which is often a deficiency in such books) showing a high standard of colour rendition. If one were to buy only one book of this type, this one should be head of the list.

4-0 out of 5 stars a gift
This book was purchased as a gift for someone who was very pleased with it, so it was worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The One an Only
I have owned this book since 1998 (now 2008)and it is the only book I would never give up. I have and use many watercolor books however this is a must for realism. Rocco has transformed my watercolors into looking like photos. I only wish I could see more of his works and that he would do another book. If your looking for realistic technics go no farther.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most realistic nature and architectural watercolors...
The first time I saw this book by Michael P. Rocco in my local public library, I've been convinced that realistic watercolors can be as good as just about any other paintings in airbrushing, oil, pastel, etc. And I wasalso convinced that it was a must-have in my watercolor book collection. And now it is. This book looks rather difficult, but it puts me up to speedin becoming an intermediate watercolorist. After all, watercolor is adeep-seated commitment.

Author Michael P. Rocco layed out the contents inan easy-to-follow from-simple-to-complex order. Starting from basic naturalobjects, woods, metals, bricks to water, snow, reflections, glass, clothes, ropes, almost every common texture is included and demonstrated. Mr. Roccoalso mentioned his palette and composition. Last but not least, the 11complete painting demonstrations at the end are a plus. The author is verygood at not only landscapes, but also still life and portrails.

At themoment, I can't find any books that compare to Painting RealisticWatercolor Textures. It's a one-man work. Though you can find some veryrealistic watercolor snapshots in Splash 1-5 Best of Watercolor, it's justthat. The series displays the best works. If you're looking for a goodtutorial book in realistic watercolors, look no further. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A display of fine museum pieces, and surely the next best thing to visiting the Hood Museum of Art in person
Marks Of Distinction: Two Hundred Years Of American Drawings And Watercolors From The Hood Museum Of Art is the accompaniment of the centerpiece exhibition of a year-long celebration commemorating the Hood Museum of Art's twentieth anniversary as well is its permanent collection. An introductory essay leads into this elaborate visual tour of classic pastel, ink, and watercolor artworks by notable American artists ranging from John Singleton Copley to John James Audubon to James McNeill Whistler and many more. Each piece of art is featured on a two-page spread; to the right is an exquisite photograph of the work itself in full color, to the left is a detailed one-page essay concerning the history, composition, and other pertinent details concerning the work. Marks Of Distinction is as much a celebration of American artistic consciousness and legacy as it is a display of fine museum pieces, and surely the next best thing to visiting the Hood Museum of Art in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors
A must for the watercolorist library, especially for those leaning towards realism. This book is well illustrated and its organization lends itself to finding easy guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars AnAmazing Watercolor Book!
I have an extremely large collection of watercolor instruction books since I love to try new approaches. This book is one of my favoriteS.Many(most) watercolor books are just self praise books with not much useful instruction.I find Mr. Hendershot's book to be extremely informative and well written.I find myself referring to this book often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just Technique, but a nice monograph
Hendershot's book is, as stated, not for the beginner, but what he has here is something that I think the beginner could use and would find greatly inspiring.
His own style is quite beautiful, and if you are looking for it, a more than passing hint at A. Wyeth can be found in his work. Artists interested in His technique will / may find something similar in Hendershot(though Hendershot definitely has his own amazing view, also Andy ain't going to talk soon, so this may be as close to it as one gets).

It is not merely a technique book either, it is practically a monograph for Hendershot. Reproductions are quite amazing.

Having communicated with the publisher, there are "no plans" to republish this book. If you find one here, grab it!! The one at the local library here can now have a rest, as My copy has arrived

5-0 out of 5 stars Help to define your realistic style
While not a beginner's book, Hendershot's book offers straightforward advice on creating realistic textures.I was surprised how easy it was to add realism to my work.I enjoyed the subdued palette.Raw umber and paynes gray figure prominently in my palette now.As other reviewers have wrote, Hendershot's book has helped me create my best work to date.A treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb texture techniques
This is by far the best watercolor book I have seen. This book is not for beginners as the author points out at the beginning itself. Maybe that is why it is so much more interesting for advanced beginners and beyond as he quickly and methodically takes us through a progression of splendid techniques for painting trees, grass, barns, buildings, still life etc. As a lover of landscape paintings, I find Ray Hendershot's paintings simply a joy to study. I am really happy I got this book. ... Read more
