Product Description
The Snowflake Man is a biography of Wilson Alwyn Bentley, thefarmer from Jericho, Vermont, who took more than five thousandphotomicrographs of ice, dew, frost, and - especially - snow crystals.Although his photographs were taken between 1885 and 1931, they have neverbeen equaled and are in great demand today.

Bentley's story is one of courage and persistence against tremendous odds.He taught himself how to photograph snow crystals through a microscopewhile still in his teens and then pursued his obsession for years beforehaving the beauty and scientific value of his work recognized by others. The Snowflake Man lays open the life of a simple, self-educated, sensitiveman who pursued natural beauty with microscope and camera for nearly fiftyyears. The book contains 30 black and white photographs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars To Preserve Nature's Designs for all the World to See.
Wilson A. Bentley rarely left Jericho, Vermont, but his contributions to meteorology and his extraordinary photomicrographs of snow crystals reach far and wide. In 1885, at the age of 19, Bentley became the first person to successfully photograph a snowflake. A lifetime of dedication -not to say obsession- to preserving the beauty of ephemeral snow crystals produced over 5,000 impressive snowflake images. Even now, Bentley's images are found on textiles, paper products, jewelry, and every sort of graphic art. Atmospheric scientist and author Duncan Blanchard has pieced together Bentley's story as best as possible with relatively little surviving documentation of his personal life. Of course, to Bentley, photographing snowflakes and studying atmospheric phenomena was his personal life. He was passionately devoted to it.

"The Snowflake Man" begins with a little Bentley family history, then follows Wilson's life and work from his birth in 1865 to his death in 1931 at age 66, shortly after the publication of his wonderful "Snow Crystals", which brought the best of his vast collection of snow crystal photos to book form. Bentley lived his entire life on his family's 4-generational farm and made his photographs in the barn, washing his glass plates in a brook, making copy negative with an oil lantern and contact prints by sunlight. He applied the same methodical perfectionism to recording the weather and studying the formation of raindrops and frost, among other atmospheric water phenomenon. Many of Bentley's contributions to meteorology were recognized at the time, but science took a few decades to catch up with his pioneering work in cloud physics.

Duncan Blanchard has written a sympathetic biography of Wilson Bentley, a man who suffered constant derision for his scientific obsession that was simply unproductive and out of place in a farming community. His spectacular photomicrographs opened the door to professional respect and, eventually, popular fame. This biography is more straightforward than eloquent, and Blanchard jumps to too many conclusions about Bentley's thoughts and his family. But the book is very readable and contains as much information on Wilson Bentley as anyone is going to find. There is an index in the back as well as a list of all of the known articles that Bentley authored in his lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute for one man's life long obsession
It is said that no two snowflakes are alike; the same holds true for the obsessions that drive the human spirit. Some we control, others control us. Wilson A. Bentley, an eccentric Vermont farmer, gave in to his fascination with snowflakes and spent his entire life documenting their myriad forms. His unprecedented and starkly beautiful collection of literally thousands of photographs of snowflakes taught the world just how unique these ice crystals really are, and how one man could stubbornly pursue one microscopic slice of knowledge over the entire course of his life.

Bentley lived and died bewitched by atmospheric process. As a teenager, he built by hand the photographic equipment that would later gain him some measure of fame, often incorporating found materials - such as straws from a broom - into the rigors of his study. Dismissed by most as a harmless crank, his work was groundbreaking, leading to a revolution in understanding.

In The Snowflake Man, author Duncan S. Blanchard uses his professional training as a meteorologist and physicist to commemorate the labor of love that drove Bentley. The writing is, at best, of limited merit but in some odd way that only serves to make the images of Bentley - a confirmed bachelor - hunched over his photographic equipment all the more poignant. What is clear is that Mr. Blanchard knows his subject matter well and was no doubt inspired in his own career by the unwavering dedication, or obsession, of the odd and all but forgotten researcher.

Like Bentley's favorite subject matter, the book itself will quickly melt away - it is a slim effort that can be read in one sitting. The photographs, now almost a century old, are still remarkable though. Most compelling, however, is the insight it offers into obsession which will linger long after the last page. It is a worthy and recommended read if only to honor the fierce, undying commitment of the snow flake man.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Education
This book, as is snowflakes, is very unique.Illustrations are fantastic and tell a story of their own!

5-0 out of 5 stars Warmest possible treatment of a delightfully chilly subject
Author Blanchard brings humor, life, and compelling energy to an eccentric and an era previously hidden under a thick layer of (snow)dust.Bentley, generally considered an eccentric -- when considered at all -- was actuallya dedicated scientist with an artist's eye and heart. What could have beendull scientific treatise actually reads with the smooth pull of a goodnovel. ... Product Description
In January 1998, five days of freezing rain, up to 100 millimetres, fell in some parts of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. About 2 million homes – more than 5 million people – were plunged into darkness for up to a month in the dead of winter. It was, indisputably, the storm of the century.

This book is the definitive story of the ice storm, captured in pictures by Canada’s best news photographers. The following newspapers have combined their resources to make this book: La Presse (Montreal), The Gazette (Montreal), The Ottawa Citizen, LeNouvelliste (Trois Rivières), Le Droit (Ottawa), The Whig-Standard (Kingston), The Standard Freeholder (Cornwall), The Recorder and Times (Brockville) and La Voix de l’Est (Granby). 5-0 out of 5 stars Do We Have Any Sidewalk Salt?
That was the question I asked my wife when I opened the front door to check for a newspaper on Monday, January 5, 1998. The steady drizzle was obviously turning icy and, having gone through this before on many occasions, I knew any trip down the front steps was going to be an adventure in keeping one's footing. Little did I realize what was to come.

This "Historic Record In Photographs Of January 1998" with text by Mark Abley tells the whole story of that fateful storm which was simultaneously beautiful ... and deadly. Not to mention hugely expensive.

The collected colour photographs in this large-size volume [30cm wide x 23.5cm] are absolutely amazing, from ice-covered, downed trees, snapped hydro poles, collapsed hydro towers, frozen, stalled vehicles, to dead cattle, each tells a story.

And if and when I find myself complaining about the oppressive humid heat of an Ottawa summer day, I just haul this out to quickly remind myself how much worse the winters can be.

Anyone who lived through it should have a copy. For those of you who live in tropical climes - it's a wonderful incentive to stay put.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vision of Disaster
This book illustrates to anyone who didn't experience the Ice Storm first hand exactly what it looked and felt like. The photographs show the vast distruction of trees and hydro lines; farm animals and wildlife. The texttells in detail some of the personal stories of the ordeal.Thephotographs will keep the memory of the events alive for many years tocome. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Want To Learn About Tornadoes, Look No Further!!
I have been an active Storm Chaser for over 10 years and have read just about every book on storms and tornadoes that I can get my hands on, including text books, and this book was easily one the best and most pleasant to read. A lot of these types of books can feel detached. In other words they may give you great information but it just seems devoid of any real enthusiasm or emotion. That is simply not the case with this book. The authors, Jerrine & Arjen Verkaik, have a real passion for this subject matter and this passion and excitement gets transferred to the written page making the reading far more enjoyable and imo that much easier to remember.

On top of how well its written, it also has a lot of fantastic pictures, illustrations and diagrams which really add to the depth of the writing. The personal experience and expertise that the Verkaik's bring to the table is impressive by any standards and again it just adds a quality and depth to the writing that simply isn't present with a lot of other books. The fact that they are not meteorologists just makes the entire book that much more impressive.

The bottom line - If your interested in storms and tornadoes then this book should be at the top of your to read list. Once finished you will never look at a tornado or storm the same way again. If your an active storm chaser or thinking about getting into storm chasing then this book should be a mandatory addition to your library. Even if you dislike technical books you should give this book a go. The manner in which its written really lifts this book above its competition and ultimately makes it accessible to practically everyone, including those who have a hard time with technical books.

An absolutely brilliant read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written about tornadoes
Interesting, enlightening and useful are only a few of the adjectives that describe this book. It has everything from exciting stories to amazing facts. While the book includes many incredible photographs, they are intended to educate rather than just inspire awe. Whether you are interested in storm chasing or just want to recognize and protect your family from dangerous weather formations, this is the book for you. It truly has truly something for just about everyone from the light browser to the seasoned chaser. This is a book that everyone in tornado-prone areas should have as a reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner storm chasers or Midwest residents.
Well, it's not quite everything, but if you live in the Midwest you should really consider getting this book, whether it be used or new.It offers many different images as far as storm structures, tornado structures and clouds.

Diagrams are offered for 1) viewing the inside of a "worst-first" thunderstorm, 2) viewing the inside of a "worst-last" thunderstorm, 3) inside a tornado, 4) two pages of drawings of different "breeds" of tornadoes, 5) damage paths with debris location, etc.

There are small side notes on almost every page including "weird" information, myths, quick reference, highlights and checklists.

As for beginning chasers or settled chasers with bad luck (such as I), this is a great book to get started with.Aside from Arjen and Jerrine talking about one specific storm that spawned two tornadoes, you'll also learn about "The Storm Environment" (p.68).The Storm Environment explains the different types of clouds that are present with storms and what to expect with them. This section lasts two pages. The "Weather Words" section will get you up to date on your vocabulary used throughout the book.Although there are no scientific words that you'll never understand written throughout the book at all, it does contain words like aloft, updraft, downdraft, inflow, outflow and core.If you're unfamiliar with these words (or you simply think you know what they mean) this could come in handy.A small section is given to weather offices, such as SKYWARN and CANWARN.

This book will also describe to you the difference between a tornado, twister, funnel, funnel cloud, wall cloud, etc. Some of them have no differences at all, even though they are thought to have different meanings.

So far, I have only gotten through the two chapters focusing on Severe Storms and Tornadoes.I'll be back to update the review after I've gotten through the entire book.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly written, diverse & well-illustrated tornado tome

Although the authors are Canadian, and aim the book at an audience north of the U.S., American weather enthusiasts and anyone wondering about tornadoes will soak this up."Under the Whirlwind" is a solid work overall; and for a self-published book, it is amazingly informative and accurate.Readers may be as surprised at the Verkaiks' insight into severe storms issues, since they are not meteorologists. However, their devotion to learning scientific concepts, combined with their extensive storm observing experience and conversational writing style, allows them to succeed with this book. Although the reading is light in a purely technical sense, I found only a few typos and insignificant errors.More important are the clear messages of practicality, realism, education and compassion in the book -- which includes numerous suvivors' tales as well as segments on insurance coverage and helping children to deal with storm-related tragedy. The authors convey a wise message of safety and responsibility as well, for example:"After damaging tornadoes strike there are usually calls for better alert systems -- more bells and whistles....But the best warning you can have comes from keeping your eye on the sky."

The illustrations are numerous and excellent, without peer in popular severe weather literature.Their deep artistic and educational appreciation for the wonders of a stormy sky pours forth in the form of dozens of full-color photos -- many consisting of spectacular storm structure scenes taken on their forays to the American Great Plains. These aren't presented just to show off the Verkaiks' mastery of storm photography, but to aid in interpreting cloud features. There are also several interesting, high-quality, contributed photos of Canadian tornadoes which never have been published before. The Verkaiks richly endow the volume with drawings, tables and color graphs as well, including numerous inset trivia boxes scattered throughout the book related to debunked tornado myths and tornado oddities.

Because this hasn't been a widely advertised book or peddled by a major publishing house since its 1997 debut, it may go under the radar, so to speak. But it is well worth the cost for students and general audiences curious about the mysteries of tornadoes.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was the best book I have ever read on the subject.
Under The Whirlwind is, one of the best books about tornadoes available. By reading the book, you will gain an amazing amount of knowledge, and be able to look at the sky with amazement and knowledge about what you seehappening. It explains everything you ever wanted or need to know aboutsevere weather and tornadoes, and it is written in understandable terms.Buy this book, and impress your friends with your knowledge of the stormysky! ... Great photographs of delicate and ethereal snowflakes. The text is informative and well thought out. I recommend this book to any one who is intrigued by the many wonders of nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Snowflake
Highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone! It is just too cool for words!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome photos and interesting info.
Exellent book on snowflakes. Great photos and educational info on the formation , etc. This book makes a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Beautiful Book
I have read this book quite many years ago, or just two, and I can honestly say it's beautiful in the most breath-taking way. The photographs are seriously impressive and I don't think you've ever seen snowflakes quite like that. The text is great as well and you get to learn a lot of things about snowflakes.

Don't think this book would "steal" the mystery of snowflakes, as with everything in life, the more questions are answered, the more questions. So with this book.

I recommend it to anyone interested in snow and snowflakes in particular. It would make a wonderful gift, also. I can't recommend this book enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another reason to love snow
Well written, with unparalleled photos of snow crystals. The book contains accurate physics, nice insights into snow crystal morphology and growth and is at a level that will engage almost everyone. Enough information here for a physicist to enjoy the book, but presented in a way that will not intimidate the layman. Just gazing at the pictures of the snowflakes will inspire wonder at the beauty of these little ephemeral creations, and is an antidote for frazzled nerves any time of the day, in any season. I've bought several to give away and one for myself, and it probably won't be the last one.

The reviewer below who thought the author doesn't give enough credit to God for the amazing design of the snowflake, may be a little too demanding. Perhaps the author thought the little crystals speak for themselves, and lets the reader draw his own conclusions. I can't look at these beautiful pictures without marveling at a God who is so creative He doesn't "know when to quit"! ... Read more

Before a snowflake melts on your tongue, it makes an epic journey.  This is the story of that journey, step by step, from a single snowflake’s creation in the clouds, through its fall to earth, to its brief and sparkling appearance on a child’s mitten.  Told by a scientist who knows snowflakes better than almost anyone, the story features his brilliant photographs of real snowflakes, snowflakes forming (in the author’s lab), water evaporating, clouds developing, ice crystals, rain, dew, and frost--all the elements of the world and weather that add up, flake by flake, to the white landscape of winter.  Aimed at readers from 6 to 12, the book gets to the heart of one of nature’s most magical phenomena while making the wonder of the snowflake all the more real.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret Life of a Snowflake
This book is beautifully set out and simple to understand. Dr. Kenneth Libbrecht has presented us with something truly beautiful and fascinating. I purchased this book as a gift for my eight-year old grandson and he (and his sisters) will love learning from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A glossary of incredible snowflake shapes and facts
"The Secret Life of a Snowflake: An Up-Close Look at the Art & Science of Snowflakes" is a stunning collection of microscopic images of beautiful, perfect snowflakes. Filled with visual enchantment, "The Secret Life of a Snowflake" traces the life cycle of a snowflake, and gives many visual examples of comparable objects (such as a penny, or a needle) along with a snowflake to show its actual size. Surprisingly, there are many ways to make a snowflake, as well as different ways a snowflake can grow. Dr. Libbrecht confirms from his fascinating observations that indeed, no two six-sided snowflakes are alike, and indeed, all snowflakes are hexagonal. "The Secret Life of a Snowflake" is a glossary of incredible snowflake shapes and facts that will delight and educate juvenile readers ages 9-10 everywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A crystal clear view of the art and science of snow!
Professor Kenneth Libbrecht's beautiful pictures of snow are the perfect backdrop for this insightful book on snow. The pictures will delight children, and the author also describes the process of taking photographs as well as the science of why snow has 6 sides (I won't give it away), how snow forms, and different forms snow can take.

I used this with pre-schoolers, but there are a number of words per page, so it may work even better with elementary school aged children.

The book deals less with the "art" side of the snowflake (the art is basically the pictures themselves), but the science is strong and makes up for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photographs
The photographs are amazing! The information is just the right length and at a level where grade school children can understand it. It explains how a snowflake is formed. There are lots of pictures and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
This book is much more personal then the other wonderful book written about Bentley.I do wonder where the references come from, if the author had letters or access to family in some way?Beautiful illustrations and a joy to read. The book on the Bentley photos of snow flakes is a must with any of the books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story ~ and All True!
Wilson A. Bentley, the "Snowflake Man," (1865-1931) was born and raised in Vermont, or snow country...and he "lived his environment" to the hilt!
Every chance he got, he was out there in Nature, taking pictures of insects, water droplets, dew-covered spider webs and that for which he is best known ~ snowflakes and snow crystals.
He led a very interesting and, for the most part, misunderstood life, but he was not one to quit. No matter what the obstacle, he was determined to overlook and overcome it. And his brother, most admiringly, tells this story in a way that only a family member and first-hand observer can.
Even tho' the reminiscing is not his actual words, Charlie Bentley, Wilson's older brother, looks back with affection and admiration...and his words are made to warm the heart of the reader.
The illustrations are wonderful to behold ~ and if I were a young reader (I am in my late 50's now) I would have loved to have owned this book, even then. I am proud to have it in my library now, having a young Grandson who will learn about Nature at my own knee...I intend to encourage him to never be afraid of learning, of the wonders of creation, and of following his own star.
Wilson A. Bentley will be a perfect example of what one person can do to teach and inspire others to do what comes naturally to them, no matter what anyone else says, and in the end, that is always the only way to be, isn't it? ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story on HUMAN Endeavor
The more well known children's book, Snowflake Bentley (Caldecott Medal Book), may have won the Caldecott award, but I must confess to enjoying this book much more."My Brother Loved Snowflakes," told from the brother's perspective, shows the human side of people who may be different than others, and makes the quest for knowledge about people, about us and our quest to learn about the world we are blessed with.Rather than playing up Willie Bentley as an eccentric, it shows him as unique, and shows children that for all his differences he gave much to our wealth of knowledge and above all the people in the story -- even the people who attend a lecture he walks out on without a word because of the snow, as very accepting that Bentley is who Bentley is and that there is nothing wrong with that.Since our children will meet so many other children who are vastly different than them, some of them seemingly eccentric, this is a subtle reminder that we all have value and that the difference is part of what makes the world interesting. We need that diversity.

This book will have an added interest to homeschoolers because Bentley and his brother are taught by their mother, a woman who encourages her son's love of learning -- and the father, though he doesn't "get" all this snowflake stuff, still strives to respect his son's desires and loves and encourage him and do what he can regardless.

We made this into something a snowflake learning fest.Bentley's photos of snowflakes are available in an inexpensive format, Snowflakes in Photographs.More modern and beautiful are the books by Kenneth G. Libbrecht. We chose The Snowflake. This had enlarged photographs and my first grader used pattern blocks to recreate some of them, as well as making paper snowflakes for the window. We also took black paper (left out in the car so it would be cold) to catch snowflakes and look at them with a magnifying glass. We will be revisiting "snowflake studis" later on when he is older to get more into the science of them, as is covered in the Libbrecht book.

Overall, this book was great for supporting our curriculum, which presents science and math in hands on ways and includes a lot of biography with explanations of how scientists go about "doing science" -- but which is to also remind us that science without the human element is purposeless, and sometimes even dangerous. ... CRITIQUE= This entire book-entity is a work of art, as the layouts vary to add variety to the mostly white images and black text and the pictures so perfectly express the picture they are pared with. This sense of unity can be attributed to the fact that unlike most picture books, the Stemple's photographs came before the text. The poems were only produced after he had given the photographs to his mother, Jane Yolen, who was then directly inspired by them. The short poems would most likely hold a child's attention with their humour and amusing rhymes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars See Nature's Miniature Masterpieces Every Month of the Year.
This "Snowflakes" 2007 calendar features 63 photographs of snow crystals by Caltech physics professor Kenneth Libbrecht, who has become known, even among laypeople, as an expert in the science of snow and the photography of snow crystals, having published 3 stunning snowflake books in the past few years. This is a full-sized, 12x12-inch wall calendar for 12 months, January through December 2007. There are 3-9 snowflake images per month, with a literary quote about snow or nature below the photos. You'll recognize the quotes from Libbrecht's "Little Book of Snowflakes". The photos are taken from his books as well. Many of the photographs are beautiful 6-sided snowflakes, but there are some columns and irregular snow crystals among them.

The calendar pages are plain with attractive black font on a white background. Months and days are in English only. Each day has plenty of space to write in, but there are no vertical lines separating the days, only horizontal lines separating the weeks. This may be difficult to picture. The result is that the "box" for each day has a top and a bottom but no lines on the sides. Some people may find the lack of clear borders between the days disconcerting. Knowing exactly where to write or, rather, where not to write, is guesswork. US, UK, Australian, and New Zealand national holidays are indicated, as are major Christian and Jewish holidays. No Continental European or Muslim holidays are marked.

Instead of having one hole on each page to hang it by, the "Snowflakes" calendar has 2 holes. I don't know if the publisher intends us to hang the calendar on 2 nails or to put a string through the holes and hang it from a peg. A string would be impractical, since we must flip the page every month. Two nails are also impractical when one will do. If you want a single, centered hole, you will have to punch it yourself. This is a nice calendar, but the lack of vertical lines, a center hole, and too few holidays are drawbacks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect summer hostess present
I will never look at stripes the same way.Same for the sun dress, the swimsuit, and all the other resort staples. This book is a fresh look at fashion in fun places, combined with true glamour and reader-friendly research on the evolution of this particular niche.I am NOT a fashionista, yet i love the wonderful photos. There are countless looks i have never seen before, or imagined one might wear. Now i see wear so many of the mainstream trends started. As the title suggests, it's an escape, and puts you in a get-away mood.I plan to make it a house or hostess present everywhere i go this summer!

Product Description
„Unfold“ exhibits the work of twenty-five artists who have participated in the Cape Farewell expeditions in 2007 and 2008 to the High Arctic and in 2009 to the Andes. Each artist witnessed firsthand the dramatic and fragile environmental tipping points of climate change. Their innovative, independent and collective responses explore the physical, emotional and political dimensions of our complex and changing world stressed by profligate human activity. This body of work addresses a new process of thinking where artists play an informed and significant role through creating a cultural shift, a challenge to evolve and inspire a symbiotic contract with our spiritual and physical world. ... Product Description

Europe At Night Gloss Lamination is a 24x36 inches (61x91cm) black & white satellite map. In contrast to daytime images, where only natural features are easily visible, the activities of Europeans at night are readily traced in this mosaic of images taken over the period 1985-89 by U.S. Air Force weather satellites. This unique image reveals the extent of light energy use, especially in the densely-populated Northern parts of Europe. Even in the south, Spain and Italy are framed by the thread of coastal habitation.

One-sided paper print, two-sided gloss lamination.
