5-0 out of 5 stars A good book telling a story of a stranger in the woods and how the animals and birds react to him.
This is the third of three board books by Carl Sams and Jean Stoick. It is meant for children ages 2 to 5 and is a condensed version of Stranger in the Woods, by the same authors. The photography catches birds and small animals as they interact with the snow man who is decorated with food for them.Deer and squirrels and other photographs tell the child about leaving food out for them.In this case, the snowman is his own buffet. The authors have a genius for capturing all of the diners who feed there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely baby's board book about winter and nature.
Unlike many babies' book today, this book consists of real photographs of a variety of animals. These happen to be in a snow setting. With few words and beautiful pictures, a baby will get a good introduction to the world of winter nature, where the snowman will share his gifts of seeds and carrots. It is a board book, so it is safe to read and then hand to the baby. The pictures are taken from, without the longer story, the book by these authors, Stranger in the Woods. The birds and squirrels will likely look just like the ones the baby can see in his own backyard, and who doesn't love a beautiful deer?If you live with no snow, you get a good demonstration of what a snowman is. A delightful book all around!

5-0 out of 5 stars Winter Friends Indeed!
My small kids (4 and 2) love this book. They really like looking at the pictures of animals outside in winter. Last Christmas this book inspired me to re-use old or unmatched mittens and hats for a Snow Man kit. I wrapped them up and bought some carrots and bird seed so the kids to could feed the animals just like in the book. They loved looking out the window to see if anyone had come to eat the seeds/carrots we left on our snowman!

5-0 out of 5 stars Winter Friends and a Toddlers Favorite
This is a board book and the shortened dialoge from "Stranger in the Woods" by the same author/photographer. The pictures are real photographs of wildlife and are beautiful. This is a nice change from other snowmen books. I would recommend any books by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable
I got this for my 9 month old daughter, and she loves the photographs.I want to expose her to "real" nature; not just drawings or silly sketches of animals. The book is endearing and we both just love it.I am going to order the other books by the same photographic team as well as the DVD's, and I'm sure we will love those, too. ... Product Description
The sky is a never-ending source of inspiration for artists, poets, and anyone who has found peace in contemplating clouds or a colorful sunset. Whether viewed from below or from above—with the help of satellite images—the pictures in this new addition to White Star's popular CubeBooks series convey the many faces of the sky.Colorful images capture the violent force of tempestuous storms as well as the glorious sunrises, sunsets, and northern lights that are reflections of nature's gentler side.Readers view the sky in horizons that frame both the most beautiful natural parks and landscapes in the world and the skylines of the world's most sophisticated cities.Spectacular views of flocks of migratory birds pose a fascinating contrast to images of people "flying" in extreme sports such as paragliding, sky-diving or through the impressive maneuvers of acrobatic air squads.Throughout the book, insightful captions provide fascinating facts about meteorological phenomena and other heavenly tidbits. With its stunning full-page spreads, the Cubebook format is ideal for showcasing sweeping cloud formations, dramatic weather patterns, and vast expanses of deep, pure blue sky. Accessible and delightfully tactile, The Sky Cubebook will appeal to readers of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the pretty pictures
The photos are what make these little books a joy. Like another reviewer I noticed the text is pretty poor: 'tunnel cloud' was used for 'funnel cloud' etc. A few of the photos were also heavily computer edited. Two of the tornado photos are not real and there was one cirrus photo that was wholly generated on a computer and another that was given a spiral distortion.

I still give the book five stars because there are so many beautiful pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the Cube Books!
I have seven of the Cube Books and love everyone of them.Sometimes I do chuckle at the information in them when it isn't quite real, but the intent is good and the photographs awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking up
This book is a real pleasure. Its photos of the sky at various times, places, angles show us how beautiful our life can be if we only look up. The book aside from the photos which are its heart explains what the 'sky' is and how it relates to our ordinary life perceptions and the insights into the universe given to us by our scientific instruments. When looking at this book I had in mind the traditional Jewish teaching , that aperson should always 'look up' when they walk. That is the Sky is not only the Sky not only the colors and shapes of what we see but rather is suggestive of what is Beyond us, of a realm which helps us dream and hope.
This is a truly enjoyable little album, and one I think many guests would delight in taking from the coffee- table andleafing through. ... Read more

Product Description
A magical, illustrated tour of nature’s wondrous, almost supernatural skyscapes, Kaleidoscope Sky reveals the beauty—and the science—behind Earth’s rarest, most unusual celestial phenomena.

For millennia, the sky has provided a spectacular show with bright, quiet sunrises and fiery red sunsets, the wispy, whimsical patterns of clouds passing overhead, or the violent thrill of lightning flashing at night. In Kaleidoscope Sky, author Tim Herd explains to the armchair voyager the conditions that produce these everyday phenomena, as well as rarer sights including auroras, halos, mirages, arcs, and even moonbows (nighttime rainbows often too faint to capture on film). Although the subject is complex, Herd provides a clear, accessible guided tour of the fleeting, ephemeral works of art that populate the heavens’ own natural museum. Herd’s non-technical treatment reveals his own appreciation for (and wonder at) the awesome and wonderful palette of the sky above us. In addition to shedding light upon the causes of these unusual spectacles, Herd provides tips on the best ways to predict, locate, and observe these phenomena. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much pleasure
This is a beautiful little book, full of fascination information about a extraordinary range of visual effects in the sky. The initial pleasure of the book is to browse through the delightful photographs, but there is much description that needs careful attention. It was a revelation to me to discover how much there is to know about the effects of the atmosphere on sunlight. The author has had to balance the need for simplicity and clarity in explaining sometimes difficult concepts to those of in his audience who are not familiar with the science against the need to give explanations that are comprehensive and accurate. For me, this balance was sometimes uncomfortable, in that I sometimes felt the topic to be hard to grasp and sometimes I needed more detailed and technical explanations. Overall, however, I think the book well deserves a five star rating, and I'm sure it will continue to be consulted from time to time for pleasure and for information.
I should like to thank my astute grand-daughter, Holly, who discovered the book and decided that it would interest me. She was so right!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sky Photo's
I really enjoyed this book as a photographer of nature this one is outstanding.I also like that it incoprorates explanations of how and what conditions are needed to get these kinds of photo's.Great book for those who don't take photo's as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look up!
Look up!That is the theme that runs through Tim Herd's book.If you don't, you'll miss out on some truly wonderful sights. His book treats rainbows, optical solar effects, aurorae, sunsets, and other phenomena with the awe that they deserve. The images in this book are stunning. But it is no mere picture book--Tim Herd is a meteorologist and a naturalist...he really knows his subject, and he explains things in a way that helps us understand the science and nature behind each of the images.A wonderful book for the general public but also for geography and meteorology students!

4-0 out of 5 stars Visually yummy.
This book is delicious. It has nuggets of text that explain in detail certain atmospheric phenomena, but my favorite aspect is the collection of photos that capture the "green flash", "St. Elmo's Fire", "bead lightning", "airglow", Iridium flares, Alpenglow, Zodiacal lights, the Earth's shadow, numerous rainbow varieties, auroras, mirages, and contrails. There are better books on any *single* topic (e.g., auroras), but this is my favorite on *all* visually stunning atmospheric phenomena. ... Read more
