Some 400 families are treated, each family sketchcommencing with the known ancestors of the first settler and proceeding in the direct line ofdescent to representatives of the family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The genealogiesare presented in a series of independent sketches and incorporate the important facts regardingthe ancestry, personal careers, and matrimonial alliances of those who held leading positions insocial, professional, and business life. This work was originally published in 1912 in threevolumes consisting of a series of historical sketches and a multitude of full-page photographicportraits; however, for reasons of economy, these have been omitted, enabling us to reprint anabridged edition in two volumes. The original pagination, here commencing with page 363 of theoriginal, is maintained because it corresponds to the page references in the index.

History of Jefferson County, WV
If one is interested in how this region has fit into the scheme of things over the past 250 or so years, this book is for you. It doesn't seem to play favorites, is well cited with loads of references and even though written in 1941, everything up to that point in time is well covered, especially the war-torn, strife-ridden years surrounding the Civil War. It is well-worth the price of admission for what it does tell and if one desires to dig even further, the references are there and hopefully still exist today, 65+ years after original publication. 5-stars all the way. ...
