A must have for wildlife photographers
This Guy Edwards is just so good, his composition is quite beautiful, I liked the layout and the way this is designed, he has some sound advice in an excellent publication. Inspiring.

Nature Photography
I was especially pleased on the approach that this author used to help define what is required for great nature and outdoor photography. It is clearly written and offers the newbie and the old timers the requirements needed to achieve great outdoor pictures. Granted some things will cost you $$, but the other suggestions, such as commom sense are good reminders of the basic things needed to achieve that special chance to capture that certain picture. Some of it requires luck, some requires patience, but the techniques described and the approaches offered are great reading.

"100 Ways to Take Better" series is simply.. amazing!
I have all books (I could find in the U.S.) from the "100 Ways" series - landscape, wildlife, portraits, b&w, general for one reason, and one reason only: while other books on the given subject could be funnier, use the same equipment that I use (for some reason every author in this series uses Canon equipment - could you imagine how much better the results could've been if they would've used Nikon?! Just kidding!!), easier to put in a pocket, etc. etc. - "100 Ways" is the series I learned from the most. Period.

Just imagine - for $18 you get 100 ultra-high quality photographs on a single subject with detailed settings used information, how-tos, whys and story behind the photo, tips and tricks, and, simply, new ideas for your own new creations.

A Realistic Approach To Animal Photograhpy
The reality of life is that few of us can spenda carear in the field in pursuit of the cover shot for National Geo., but we can go to the localzoo etc. and create presentable images that wecan be proud of, andperhaps sell.This book provides some of the guidelines.Nobody can giveyou the skills, this will only come after you apply yourself and expose afew miles of film.

Mr. Havelin's writing flows well, it is written withenough down to earth wit to keep a senseof reality.This I find rare inphotography related publishing, and I credit him and thepublisher forthis.

The author offers useful advice, and demonstrates with his ownwork, and he is not afraid to showsome of his shots that didnt come outperfect, to illustrate his point.

Shooting Animals With A Camera: From Awful to Awesome
I wished I had read "Practical Manual of Captive Animal Photography" several decades ago before filling albums with numerous truly awful photos showing animals or parts of them in zoos, aquariums, gardens, and on farms.By reading Havelin's newest photography book, I discovered why many of myanimal photos leave a lot to be desired and what I can try to improve.Among the many pluses of the book are understandable advice, awesome andawful photos illustrating how to photograph and how not to, a colloquialwriting style, print one can read without a magnifying glass, and, this wasdefinitely not expected, ideas for locations to visit. I especially foundit valuable to learn about photographing through glass and fences. Forexample, on page 54 in the book are several photos of a red panda in ZooAtlanta. The first photo could have been mine. One can see a lot of metalfencing and ask: "Where is the animal?" In the last photo is only the redpanda - no cage, no fence, and no wall. I am looking forward to followHavelin's directions: "Look for right angle to minimize glare, and thecorrect depth of field to remove disturbing fence elements in front of andbehind the subject creature." ... Sit, Stay, READ this ONE!
Ever try to capture your favorite animal companion with your camera? Know how to use your camera but weak on how to shoot a great animal photo? This is a great resource, full of guidance through examples.

Not worth the Money
If you've little or no experience photographing anything this book might be helpful.Other than that I'd recommend you look elsewhere.

Much of this information is easily found on the internet in 5 minutes of searching.If you'd like to learn more about dog behavior to help photograph dogs I'd recommend a dedicated book on dogs.

My copy was published in 2003.It has 4 pages, total, of information on digital imaging.Admittedly digital camera technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in the 5 years since; to put it bluntly this book is sorely outdated.

The photography and poses are bland.A tip about creating an uncluttered background is ironic as the author provides scores of pictures with distracting background elements.Another tip about moving the flash off camera seems not to have been headed by the author either.

Spend you're money elsewhere.Even at $16 and change this books going to goodwill on my next run.

superb info on dog photography
Brilliant! Easy to read, richly laid out, informative, productive, and hey, I took an idea out with my camera and got a stunning photo!
The library shelf is slowly expanding to accommodate a good selection of titles dedicated to dog photography. There are some titles I have already reviewed, but generally I would still recommend as number one pick the out of print Sally Anne Thompson's Photographing Dogs (1989), now I can recommend a more recent title as a 'must have' although again the book pre-dates the magnificent 8 plus MB digital SLRs from the best of camera manufacturers.
Allan covers domestic and wild canines, so you can easily consider dogs in sports too. He starts with how to understand your dog's mood, the limitations of a session, learning about your equipment, even how to improve your learning. He gives you material on the various aspects of breeds, how to attract the dog's attention, get the ears up, or down. And into the more technical side he discusses the pros and cons of slide versus print film, shutter speeds for stopping motion, panning, and lighting techniques to get the coat texture captured in the print.
He finishes up with a couple of great lists to remind you of the essentials and even a photo session of his own, and finally cropping the photo - so back into composition - the thing that 'makes' the picture.
But, there is more, tucked away in here is fabulous advice on how to capture the beauty of white or black coats! He calls it the Allan Fur Factor, and to prove the point he has a picture of a white dog against a white background and with a white lamp to the side - and it is all distinguishable and in focus, can you do that?
A well bound soft cover book.

Well worth reading!
I love photographing my dogs and my skills had developed to the point that friends, family and fellow dog club members were frequently asking me to photograph their dogs too. I needed a book that would help me with two things. First, I had to learn more about lighting and second I had to learn the best camera settings to get the texture and detail in a dog's coat regardless of coat color. This book gave me both and much more. It's a very easy and enjoyable read. Parts of the book are a little too basic for me but that's a small price to pay for the great tips it contains. I definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their canine potography skills.

The author explains very early in the book that the use of the term "Creative" in the title is intended mean creating a photograph that captures the personality of the dog. The book is written to help the photographer do just that.

Great Book - Lots of Tips for In The Field
Not the best nature or wildlife photography book, but it has some great tips I have not seen in any other books. A good one to add to your library if you are serious about wildlife photography.

Stronger on field skills, weaker on photography than some of its competitors
This book is distinguished from other nature photography books (such as John Shaw's more-highly recommended book) by (1) an emphasis on wildlife as opposed to landscapes; and (2) a sole focus on digital photography.The result is a greater emphasis on fieldcraft than in Shaw - - finding animals (including both baiting and using captive animals), being in the right place to get shots, getting you and your gear organized, and other useful tricks of the trade.His focus on digital photography is total, and he's a strong advocate of manipulating photos in the digital darkroom.He's much weaker than Shaw on theory, including the important question of exposure.As a result, the two books compliment each other tolerably well.

Nonetheless, I can give this book only a lukewarm recommendation.I tend toward the other side of various debates about methods that Weston advocates, and he doesn't present both sides of these issues.It's not really wildlife photography if the animals live in a zoo, baiting animals violates Leave-No-Trace principles and can harm the animals' welfare, and I'm less keen on most digital darkroom effects other than simple cropping.However, each of those debates has two reasonable positions and you, gentle reader, might reasonably be with Weston on these issues.

A final objection is entirely subjective: a lot of the pictures in this book just aren't all that good.They're clearly professional photographs, not amateurish at all.However, very few have that extra, intangible something that makes them brilliant or memorable.Weston does not mention "National Geographic" or other top-of-the-line publications among his credits and, I'm sorry to say, I'm not surprised.If you browse both this book and Shaw's book, I think you'll see what I mean - - Shaw has "it," and Weston doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, I still think any aspiring wildlife photographer can learn from this book.But it's not as good as it might be.

A fantastic reference book with wonderful images
I am trying to advance my photography skills (from novice) and I found this book to be very helpful. It covers everything I was looking for.

Clear, Organized, Focused.
Firstly, this is a nice quality hardback book with some fabulous photographs.But then most wildlife photography books have great photos.What sets this one apart in my opinion is its intructional content.

Weston gives instruction on both technical photography skills and "hunting" skills.He understands the importance of both and blends and balances the two nicely.The book is organized into bite-size topics which are presented clearly.And most impressive to me is Weston's ability to focus on the important aspects of a subject.He knows what is important and is good at imparting it.

This book was fun to read, I learned a lot from it, and it got me excited about planning my next shoot.

A Good Introduction
"Digital Wildlife Photography" is an excellent introduction to its subject.It covers all of the bases that one would expect and hope for.The author particularly emphasizes the use of digital equipment in getting pictures of animals.For example in his discussion of exposure, he explains the use of histograms (a graph showing the distribution of light values) and the highlights screen (an optional screen on a digital camera's LCD display that blinks in areas of the picture that are overexposed.)Although this is one of the features of advanced digital cameras that makes digital exposures easier, it is rarely explained in any detail in many of the books that purport to discuss digital photography.

The book starts out with the usual basic equipment discussion but as one reads through the book other equipment which will prove useful to the wildlife photographer is introduced.The book progresses from simple photography, through composition, to more complex techniques, like the use of flash and action photography.The final chapter of the book is devoted to digital post processing with a discussion of simple Photoshop techniques, like setting levels and cropping.Sprinkled throughout the book are "Wild Files" where the author deals with specific animal species, like the lion, discussing where and when to photograph the animal, the shots to look out for and any special equipment needed.

I have said that the book is a useful introduction.It is, however, also a rather light once over that covers all the essential points, but doesn't go into the depth an experienced wildlife photographer might need.After reading this book, the new wildlife photographer will soon want to go on to other books with more depth like the late Bill Silliker's "Master Guide for Wildlife Photographers" or Moose Peterson's "Guide to Wildlife Photography".Those expecting to spend any time in the digital darkroom will want to read Ellen Anon and Tim Grey's "Photoshop for Nature Photographers".

I should also warn new wildlife photographers to be careful in looking at Weston's pictures.It's obvious, from reading the technical data on many of the pictures that the photographer was extremely close to the animal when the picture was taken.As they say, don't try this at home!While the captions do not identify when the pictures were taken in controlled situations (as recommended by the North American Nature Photographers Association), it seemed clear to me that many were.(In fact I'm sure I recognized a badger I had photographed at the Triple D Game Farm.)There's nothing wrong with this, since that may be the only way to get the shot needed, but readers and photographers should be aware that they should not endanger either themselves or wildlife just to get a picture. ... Nice Pictures but ultimately not worth it
I happened to pass by this book at my local library, and I ended up reading all 150 unremarkable pages.This book is essentially a compilation of Bach's journal entries and Krasemann's photographs, and a lot of times, to the book's detriment, they have nothing to do with each other.The photographs are certainly nice, but the journal entries are useless.Bach's journal is basically 150 pages of bland animal descriptions.There is little else.We barely learn anything about the circumstances of her trip, the people she interacts with, or anything else about her experience.Instead the average sentence is something like, "Today we saw the lion, the great king of the jungle."Anybody could have written this.There is nothing unique about her experience, at least from what she shows us.I got through the first 90 pages of the book in forty five minutes, and only decided to finish it because it went by so fast and had decent pictures.But I recommend that you don't waste your time, if you have better resources available.
