5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old daughter loves this book
We kept checking this out from the library and finally she said 'Mom, can we just buy it...." She loves how the story line and the realistic pictures show her the facts about wolves. She likes that some of the words are hard, but not too hard, so she can read it by herself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware the current "4-for-3" promotion
Beware of the "discount" on this item. I bought over $25 to be eligible for free shipping, and my order listed over $25 purchased. But then a "4-for-3 "discount was added that made the order go below $25 so my shipping charge was $8 and I paid more for the total order by getting this "discount."Double check your order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild, wild wolves
Great book for second graders. My grandson loved this book.It is entertaining and educational.

4-0 out of 5 stars My little girl loves it!
My six year old daughter loves animals, especially wild ones. She has been fascinated with Alaska and with wolves for some time now, although (or perhaps because) we live in a large city. She wasn't initially attracted to this book because it isn't very beautiful, but she was captivated by the accounts of real wolves in their natural surroundings. There are many books that relate the nasty side of wolves, and there are some that attempt to undo the damage of the myths of fear; but to read about how wolves really live (and to acknowledge their mystery) is the best for my young wildlife lover. ... Product Description
"As if appearing in a dream, a stream of wolves emerged from the forest edge." So begins this exhilarating journey to one of the planet's most spectacular regions--Canada's North Pacific coast, our largest intact temperate Rain Forest and one of the last places where wolves live wild and undisturbed. Award-winning writer and wildlife photographer Ian McAllister draws from his intimate observations of more than forty wolf packs along this rugged coastline over a seventeen-year period in this first-ever documentation of their fascinating, complex way of life. In a compelling narrative and more than 100 stunning photographs, McAllister captures these majestic animals fishing for salmon, stalking seals hauled out on rocks, playing on the beach, and raising their families. The Last Wild Wolves also describes the work of scientists whose recent findings have corroborated McAllister's own observations and the traditional knowledge gleaned by First Nations people over centuries--that these wolves are genetically distinct; unlike other wolves, they subsist on coastal prey and swim from island to island in their archipelago home. The Last Wild Wolves is a remarkable portrait of the unique lives of island wolves and an eloquent expression of just how much is at stake in their preservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent labor of love
This book is a treasure. The author has spent seventeen years photographing and observing several unique wolf packs on the northern coast of British Columbia. These wolves are genetically different from inland wolves because they have been isolated by the enormous coastal mountain range.

The photos are stunningly beautiful and the text accompanying them is inspiring and informative. I learned a lot about wolf behavior and their interactions with other coastal species such as bears, ravens, salmon, and orca whales. Wolves are the true apex predators in this environment, and have been known to dine on bears. The Surf Pack even eats barnacles!

The author shows a tremendous love and respect for these magnificent animals and their habitat. It really comes through in his writing.
It's shameful that greed and willful destruction are killing them and fouling their home.

There's also a DVD that comes with this book, full of spectacular scenery and wolves in their element.

And did I happen to mention yet that I LOVE this book?

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for sure
I am usually not drawn to "coffee table books" but this one is not only stunning in the quality of photographs and layout, but the text of the book is a great and informative read. Here is what is different: The author relates his OBSERVATIONS of animals, not his interpretations of their behavior and lets you decide for yourself. Although at one point he says he never met a wolf he didn't like, his narrative will not turn off someone who doesn't like wolves either. Here are the facts of the behaviors of some wolves who have had the chance to adapt to their particular environment without being "managed".The results are very interesting and would be interesting to any reader who is interested in the natural world at all. I could understand, probably for the first time, why people can hate wolves so throughly and blindly. I could also understand the equally blind love of wolves that people profess. People are extreme on wolf issues when they don't understand the animal . . on both sides of love and hate. The reason I recommend this book so strongly is that it is the real thing. Not politically or sentimentally motivated but here are some wolf packs, here is how they live and this is what they do. The author is a good writer and the book reads like an adventure you'd like to be a part of. This might be one of the last honest wildlife books as more and more our animal information is becoming either a Hollywood script filled in with the right wildlife shots or politically and selfishly motivated.I give this book a solid five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This book is striking visually, but its greatest impact is in the story it tells of the wolves in the region. It is a remarkable journey that captures a connection to the wolves. However, I must issue a warning: You may think less of your own species for the lack of respect many of us exhibit toward the wolves.I would love to see this book as part of high school education to help raise awareness. It is a uplifting book that gives one hope.

3-0 out of 5 stars Last Wild Wolves
I liked the first part of this book very much and found it very informative. However, the later descriptions ad infinitum of our persecution of wolves were just too much.Maybe this needs to be recognized and known, but I would have preferred much less detail and space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for every who cares
This was an incredible book. I was so into it I read it straight through, in the end I was in tears. It is unbelievable what we are capable of doing to nature. I knew about the Wolves before reading this book but this completed my knowledge. I was so impressed with all the hard work the researchers put into learning about the wolves with out invading their space. I am not against the use of technology to research but sometimes I believe we go to far and harm more than our later protection can help.I for one send my thanks and support to this team.My heart goes out to the pain they must have felt in seeing the aftermath. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and necessary
This book on wild dogs written by famous australian ethologists, L. Rogers & G. Kaplan is an outstanding piece of work. While there is a vast amount a literature on dogs, only a handful of it has the scientific value that is necessary to really understand dog behavior. "Spirit of the wild dog" is one of these books. It is written by 2 scientists who have a large comparative and evolutionary view which gives this book one of its unvaluable aspect. The scientific information contained in this comparative book beautifully contrast with anecdotes on dogs which unfortunately constitutes the bulk of dog literature. Therefore if one wants to know about dogs, he better buy this book easy to read and scientifically sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Common Ground Among Canines
While I found the book to be informative and interesting, and I certainly don't regret buying it, it was somewhat different from what I had expected.I had expected the pages to devote more individual time to each specific canine species.Instead, the chapters were dedicated to exploring some of the characteristics shared among the canines (Intelligent behavior, Communication, etc.).I guess it wasn't as comprehensively expository of each species as I wanted it to be, but a good read nonetheless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info....
even if written to an 8th-grade reader's level. A long time canine fan, I learned a thing or two from this book that I hadn't run across elsewhere. If you're a dog fan, you'll want to know more about their wild canine relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their spirit lives on.
This book posed a few intriguing questions for me, in which animal lovers, biologists, social theorists and others might also be interested. The authors have backgrounds in animal behaviour, neuroscience in animals, and animal communication, cognition and welfare.

Dogs belong to the family Canidae, ground-living carnivores with around 36 species, although some of these species interbreed. The lineage is around 40-50 million years old, originating in North America. They reached Europe around 5-7 million years ago, where the well known grey wolf is though to have evolved, who then passed back into North America, amongst other places, around 700,000 years ago. All domestic dogs appear to derive from one ancestral species-Canus lupus-the grey wolf. Latest evidence suggests dogs were first domesticated around 135,000 years ago, perhaps as old as early homo sapien (p12).

A variety of wild dog characteristics can be found in the domestic versions, with some notable exceptions.

Short-sightedness is probably a domestic trait only (p45). All dogs move their ears and head around to pinpoint location-originally location of prey. Domestic dogs have two photopigments in their eyes, unlike humans with three, meaning they are slightly colour blind (compared to us). Smell is, of course, well developed, and they can tell which direction an animal/person was moving-an important hunting ability (p49). Wild pups must not stray from the den, and so domesticates can reasonably learn to stay at home. Howling (in wolves) is used to increase distances between clans and individuals. (I think there is more here-sex?, hunting prospects?, group development?). Sniffing in all dogs is intimately related to pair bonding and territorial marking. There is a variety of vocalisation forms in wild dogs, such as short distance barks, yelps, and whining, with some co-opted for dog-human communication-eg human sentence upwards inflections reflect some whining communication, etc. Barking, though variable in type and frequency, occurs in all canids, despite common misconceptions. Regurgitating food to the young is also common to all canids (I have a collie who as a puppy managed to steal my dinner from my mouth once-totally innocently of course).

Grey wolves, as opposed to some other canids, have a strong vertical social structure. Occasionally submissiveness is ignored by a superior, due to hierarchal threat, or occasionally the inferior won't submit, and an individual may occasionally be forced out of a clan entirely (sound familiar? p94).

Also of interest is that African wild dogs have a flatter social structure than grey wolves, which appears to be proportional to their `harsher' environment-that is, elements of in-group competition and in-group rivalry are reduced when conditions become more hazardous-group hierarchy in this sense is an evolved 'luxury', so to speak (p103-104). (This idea has interesting implications to social inequality in humans). Also, species which have a high degree of predatory enemies have less infighting and high co-operation rates (p141). Also of note is that an African wild dog rejected by its clan has little chance of survival from both predators and through stress-induced immune deficiency.

In a social hierarchy, ritualised and stereotyped acts are common (sound familiar?). Sometimes a group of young males may turn on an alpha male and expel or kill him (sound familiar)?. Interestingly, being an alpha male may not relate to being the best hunter-appearance, confidence and adherence to social rituals give social status, not killing/athletic success.

In many clans every female comes into oestrus at the same time, and pseudo pregnancies also occur in females within a clan, where they produce milk and may even suckle pups not of their own-obviously a group survival strategy (p114). (It is not clear whether this only occurs in related individuals-selfish gene theorists take note!). Higher levels of oestrogen in African wild dogs create more male pups in their litters (p117). I am also aware that sometimes pups within a litter have different fathers.

The larger the pack the larger the prey that is hunted (p123). Dingos in Australia also use deception in hunting. Interestingly, wolves in captivity are known to watch gatekeepers open latches and learn to do this themselves, whilst domesticates generally do not (p147). Also, wolves wait until the coast is clear before attempting to escape. This 'escape intelligence' has obviously been somewhat nullified by domestication. However, wolves are not willing to learn tricks, unlike domesticates. Dogs are also better than chimps in reading a persons eyes-a trait of group hunting (p158-9). 'Glancing' is observed in dogs between food bowls and owners, or between balls and owners.
It is also suggested that human smell is so poor partly because we have used dogs for hunting in our recent evolutionary history (p165-6). (It has even been suggested elsewhere that language may have been facilitated by this reduction in our need for smell, whereby flatter faces and the migration of the larynx to the back of the throat increased vocalisation range).

The future of the wild dog is unclear. It is stated that many rehabilitation and reintroduction programs of all species fail due to problems with animal behaviour-eg they haven't learnt to hunt, they lack predator cognition, they don't follow park boundaries etc. It appears group species like the wolf are less likely to survive in closer contact with humans than the more parasitic and solitary species such as foxes, coyotes, and also cats. (Once group habits are fractured, group species tend to perish). I like to think the 'spirit of the wild dog', so to speak, `knows' this (or in Darwinian form-a portion of the gene pool has been selected)-and so lives on within the human group. Maybe the unfairly expelled wolf from the pack lives on today in my lounge room.

Opportunity, adaptability, co-operation, humility, wildness-we have much to learn from them. ... Read more

The book I received is just as expected, however, the transaction was not what I would call good customer service. The shipping cost was 3 times the price of the book, and I was not aware of this until after pressing the button, as I had ordered a few items from different vendors.
So, I emailed to ask for a cancellation, and was told it had already gone through and couldn't be stopped....right after ordering!! Then it took over a month to arrive, which is odd, since it had gone through so quickly, apparently. I am not sure where the shipping cost comes from, as a small paperback book cannot possibly cost that much to ship! And it cannot take that long to arrive, if it was indeed processed as quickly as I was told......not a happy customer. I paid $20 for a $5 book..... ... Read more

After forming an intense bond with Natasha, a wolf cub she raised as part of her undergraduate research, Renée Askins was inspired to found the Wolf Fund. As head of this grassroots organization, she made it her goal to restore wolves to Yellowstone National Park, where they had been eradicated by man over seventy years before. Here, Askins recounts her courageous fifteen-year campaign, wrangling along the way with Western ranchers and their political allies in Washington, enduring death threats, and surviving the anguish of illegal wolf slayings to ensure that her dream of restoring Yellowstone’s ecological balance would one day be realized. Told in powerful, first-person narrative, Shadow Mountain is the awe-inspiring story of her mission and her impassioned meditation on our connection to the wild. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved Shadow Mountain!
Renee Askins has written a beautiful memoir. Her tale ranges from the fields and forests of Northern Michigan to the rugged Yellowstone outback, describing in attractive, forthright prose how wildlife, and ultimately wolves, helped shape identity and meaning in her life. The account of the complex cultural and political fight to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone is worth the purchase price, but the book offers much more.An important perspective on our connection to our environment, the importance of honoring that connections, and the perils of continuing to disregard it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Askins if my hero
I loved this story, everything from the depth of the details to the devotion and dedication this woman took for something she loved. I, too, love the mystic and wildness of wolves. She wrote about wildness in everyone, that maybe true. She is such an inspiring woman and she never gave up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I truly enjoyed this book. The only reason it is not getting 5 stars is b/c I felt a litle misled by the synopsis on the back. I thought the entire book would be about wolves and Yellowstone. The book was about these topics but also much more about the author's relationships with her animals. As an animal lover, I really enjoyed these parts of the book. And as a married person without children, I can relate when she writes about people not treating pets as family or the lack of sensitivity towards animals (as opposed to humans).

I bought this book after visiting Yellowstone recently and it was a good follow-up to my trip. How could anyone not have been excited about the reintroduction of wolves into the park. What an amazing story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flowery Garbage
Someone should ban this woman from ever using a simile or a metaphor again. At least she could refrain from using 3 or 4 of them in every sentence.I like wolves and from reading the back of the book it sounded interesting.I wish that I would have read the first chapter before buying this book.It might have some decent imformation in it, but I just about threw up from trying to get past the first chapter.

Wolves, extinct in many regions and necessarily furtive, are arare sight in the wild. 4-0 out of 5 stars Quite a Nice Book!
It doesn't delve into the world of the wolf, presenting many facts and details. Instead, it dabbles in everything wolf-related. There are photos, artworks, and exerpts from many different places. It's enjoyable to read and look through. Because I'm an avid fan of wolves, there was nothing really new for me in it. However, people who are intrigued by wolves, but don't know much about these creatures, will probably find this book a wonderful way to start.

Product Description
"WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES isn't just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from one who knows."
Alice Walker
Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. Her name is Wild Woman, but she is an endangered species. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and cantadora storyteller shows how women's vitality can be restored through what she calls "psychic archeological digs" into the ruins of the female unconsious. Using multicultural myths, fairy tales, folk tales, and stories, Dr. Estes helps women reconnect with the healthy, instinctual, visionary attributes of the Wild Woman archetype.
Dr. Estes has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!I needed that!
A compassionate but good hard push to get busy, changing the things that keep us from celebrating womanhood. You will see yourself, re-imagine yourself, and re-empower yourself.Read it, and then read it again!lol.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ever Changing
This is the one book I would want to have on the proverbial deserted island . . . it was a gift from my mother 10 or 12 years ago, and I've read it a thousand million times. Depending on what is going on in my life at the time, the stories and interpretations can be completely different from one reading to the next. I have taken away several facets to one story or another over the years, making these precious tales truly alive and magical.

The stories are told by an utter genius who is able to find that river beneath the river, that flowing part of ourselves that is the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent everything!Life-saving for those going through life changes.
Well, the book should be read by every woman (and men who can relate), especially those going through life changing events, then the understanding of what drives us, and what ultimately keeps us alive, is understood. If we don't understand ourselves we will never be able to reach the happiness we deserve.Happiness and joy that comes from the soul are quite different from the artificially induced happiness, that as an American we are taught to create, all too often developing toxic environments that kill, that which is precious and life-fulfilling. I see now life gives me the answers when I ask, and when I listen, to anything I am struggling with. It is a power we should all have. It is a power that eliminates all need for war and hatred and selfishness in anyway.Wow, I can't believe I said that!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I use Women Who Run With The Wolves as my bible. My therapist recommended I read this over 12 years ago. It's educated me on how and why women are the way they are in a loving and fascinating way.I laughed and cried and rejoyced at the stories both familiar and not.
No wonder we are so fabulous. It's time we remembered it!
I recommend this to anyone who wishes to truly embrace the wonderful wild nature of women. ... Read more

Product Description

Helen and Bill Thayer, accompanied by their part-wolf, mostly Husky dog, Charlie, set out on foot to live among wild wolf packs — first in the Canadian Yukon and then in the Arctic. They eventually set up camp within 100 feet of a wolf den, and are greeted with apprehension at first. They establish trust over time, because the wolves accept Charlie as the alpha male of the newly arrived "pack."

The Thayers discover the complexities of wolf family structure, including how pups are reared and how the injured are tenderly cared for. They view the intricacies of the hunt firsthand — how ravens direct wolves to prey in exchange for carrion — as well as the wolves’ finely honed survival skills and engaging playfulness. Readers observe the ways Helen and Bill model pack behavior and how they address an unforeseen event: the Arctic wolves attempt to lure Charlie to join them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolves
Great account of living in a remote location alongside totally wild wolves. If you want to learn how wolves live when in their own environment, this is the book for you. I loved every page. Charlie, the author's part wolf dog, comes alive on the pages, along with all the wolves in the pack. Well written, this book brings the natural world into your living room. I was surprised and very pleased to find the author's observtions about other wild life and the way different species interact in their own environment. Educational, entertaining and altogether a thoroughly good read. I recommend this to anyone, but particularly those wishing to learn more about the way wolves live and interact in the wild.

5-0 out of 5 stars enlightened read

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read
This book was incredible, and is definantly my favorite non-fiction book. This book is great for anyone who has a slight intrest in nature. It helps if you think wolves are awesome as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolves are beautiful creatures; this is a beautiful book.
This book is my second literary experience with Helen Thayer and her dog Charlie following her 2002 book "Polar Dream," in which the pair join together as Ms. Thayer became the first woman (and oldest person at 50) to walk and ski solo (not counting Charlie) to the Magnetic North Pole. In this adventure her husband Bill joins the pair as they spend a year living with wolves in the wild above the Arctic Circle. It's easy to see why the National Geographic Society/National Public Radio has named Ms. Thayer one of the great explorers of the 20th Century. Her stamina and perseverance are phenomenal. The trio infiltrates the Richardson Mountains in Canada's Yukon Territory in search of the greatest villains in all of children's literature. After struggling through most difficult terrains, they come upon a family of wolves and spend months living in a tent within the animals' sight studying the social interplay of these beasts.Completing this phase of their adventure, they sadly leave this family and trek further north into the shifting and dangerous ice of Beaufort Sea to discover the wintertime interplay between wolves and polar bears, considered by many to be the most dangerous of all wild animals. After this near-death adventure, they ski back to the Mackenzie Delta and set up housekeeping next to another group of wolves. The hardships and danger the three faces on a daily basis are amazing to contemplate. The payoff from this book is two-fold.First, the scientific data discovered for the first time. But maybe more importantly is the realization that these creatures are truly magnificent and caring individuals, and anyone who reads this book with an open mind will forever despise hunters who slaughter entire packs by shooting them from low flying airplanes.Ms. Thayer makes it crystal clear that wolves deserve to be part of the world community. There is a bit of repetition in the book.I only need to be told once that the northern lights are called aurora borealis or that animals burrow under the snow were it is a few degrees warmer than above. But that's nit picking. There is also repetition in the telling of their studies, but that captures the flavor of their scientific existence, so is acceptable. To enhance this telling, dozens of pictures taken during this adventure are sprinkled throughout. All outdoorsmen, naturalists, and animal lovers will treasure this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty book
I read this book just prior to spending a few weeks in Yellowstone, watching wolves. While there, I had the opportunity to briefly meet Dr Halfpenny, and several other scientists who study that ecosystem.

The cover of this book suggests a pretty, coffee table book, not the kind that I would usually order online. That's because I want my textbooks to have more 'meat'. But then when I leafed through this book at a bookstore I realized that there is plenty of scientific analysis, true research. Scientific detail is pleasantly blended with anecdote and beautiful photos, an excellent coffee table book as well. Just the right balance between true biological research and entertainment. My wife and I read this book over the week, and then I bought another text of his, "Yellowstone Bears in the Wild", which is equally good. I have a university biology background, and so I thought that I understood these animals and the ecosystem pretty well. In retrospect I understood very little, a humbling feeling that I think the original team must have had when they reintroduced these animals back to Yellowstone in 1995. In particular, that research team had a unique opportunity to better understand the shifting social dynamic of a pack. For example, when an alpha female loses rank, she doesn't necessarily get to become the supportive, retired grandmother, even if she wants to. And although everybody expected the coyote to be the big loser here, they were wrong, too.

The appendix lists the known wolves in each pack in 1995, 1996, and 2002. You'll find a plasticized update of that in Yellowstone bookstores that is dramatically different now in 2010, so I guess that level of detail is outdated. However, even that allows you to understand how dynamic and vulnerable this species really is.

This is a book for those who think they already know something about wolves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyment to read about the wolves and nature of Yellowstone N.P.
Mr. James C. Halfpenny has done a marvelous job at writing about the wovles and nature in Yellowstone N.P. I honestly could not put this book down. His vivid description of the wolves in the wild makes you feel that you are part of the story. It truly makes you feel that you are involved with the wolves of Yellowstone N.P. Makes you feel that you are there. Great reading for all that love nature and Yellowstone N.P.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next Best Thing to Being There
Dr. Halfpenny delves into difficult and complicated issues revolving around the wolf reintroduction and subsequent survival. He makes the science involved easy to understand and is patient with the reader.Dr. Halfpenny continously makes the reader understand these are wild animals and should be treated and studied that way. But he also allows for the fact that people are interested.

The study involved in this reintroduction has been astonishing.I would love to have seen more on the politics of the reintroduction and hope that Dr. Halfpenny continues to be involved in the wolves of Yellowstone.

Reading this book after a tough day will allow you to experience some of the wilderness and nature that we all need.I was especially moved by the Yellowstone Association class that got to touch the wolves.I would have a similar experience to what those people did if I ever had that opportunity. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT unabridged
I am reading Ms. Estes' book by the same name and am really enjoying it...so much so that I got a copy for my daughter before I even finished the book myself. My other daughter preferred a CD of the book and when I found this "unabridged" version, I bought it for her.I was very surprised when she finished it in a little over 2 hours and many of the most compelling stories had been omitted. If everything in the book is not on the audio version, it has definitely been abridged.Amazon needs to change their description so the buyer knows what they are buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to your library.
I own the hardcover edition of this book. Dr. Estes wrote a very insightful book and the collection of the stories make sense why she picked them. It took me awhile to read the first time. It's one of the books that I would read over and over. I don't think that I would ever loan it out to anyone though.
