Editorial Review Product Description These original essays by "founding mothers" feature a diversity of voices: young graduate students or new Ph.D.s just beginning to teach and untenured; tenured professors in search of ways to improve their students' capacities to learn; older, veteran academics at last witnessing change; and even a few administrators. During the early years, they taught at more than 30 campuses, many changing jobs several times. Some taught at private institutions such as Spelman College and Cornell University, while the majority taught at large state universities such as Berkeley, Michigan, Kentucky, Arizona, and the City University of New York. In all of these programs, founders grappled not only with issues of gender, but with those of class, race, and sexuality, in a decade infused with political unrest and questioning, when civil rights and antiwar activism, as well as feminism, shaped academic worlds. In engaging political memoir, these essays chronicle the exhilaration of building a new kind of institution, of constructing a new curriculum and unearthing a new body of knowledge. They also give voice to the pain of successive defeats in the face of sexist attitudes and structures. Few of these trailblazers were welcomed as agents of change, fewer still applauded for their work. Yet their stories remain both inspiring and instructive. While each of these women's narratives has a life of its own, collectively, they tell an even more powerful story. The first volume in the Women's Studies History series, The Politics of Women's Studiespreserves an essential history that is in danger of sinking into obscurity and combating the amnesia afflicting many of those teaching and studying about women today. The Politics of Women's Studies includes essays by: Electa Arenal, Gloria Bowles, Marilyn J. Boxer, Mariam Chamberlain, Johnnetta Cole, Nona Glazer, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Nancy Hoffman, Elizabeth Kennedy, Annette Kolodny, Nellie McKay, Yolanda Moses, Kathryn Kish Sklar, Barbara Smith, Sheila Tobias, and others |

Editorial Review Product Description This collection of commissioned essays re-evaluates the role of medieval women as readers, authors, and subjects of books, and the depiction of the relationships between women and books in medieval art.The fourteen essays cover such diverse topics as the development of a female audience for books, examinations of illuminations of and for women in books of hours, and how female authors viewed themselves, as well as the manufacture and collection of books and images by women. Dealing specifically with the relationships between women and images, the volume will be of interest to art historians, feminist scholars, and historians alike. |

Editorial Review Product Description Literary fiction has always provided an outlet for social and political critique. In the writing of key North African women authors, the dissection of Maghrebi society is at the very heart of the narratives. Here, Abdelkader Cheref charts the rise of postcolonial literature written by women from the Maghreb, and provides the first comparative analysis of three of the region’s most prominent contemporary authors: Assia Djeba (Algeria), Leila Abouzeid (Morocco) and Souad Guellouz (Tunisia). These writers are united in their depictions of a post-independence socio-political malaise in the Maghreb; their explorations of marginaliszed women’s voices; and their own quests for their voices to be heard beyond the rigid constraints of patriarchy. This book is essential comparative reading for students and researchers wishing to understand the connections between literature, history and culture in postcolonial North Africa. |
33. Partners in Conflict: The Politics of Gender, Sexuality, and Labor in the Chilean Agrarian Reform, 1950–1973 (Next Wave: New Directions in Women's Studies) | |

Editorial Review Product Description Tinsman restores women to a scholarly narrative that has been almost exclusively about men, recounting the centrality of women's labor to the pre-Agrarian Reform world of the hacienda during the 1950s and recovering women's critical roles in union struggles and land occupations during the Agrarian Reform itself. Providing a theoretical framework for understanding why the Agrarian Reform ultimately empowered men more than women, Tinsman argues that women were marginalized not because the Agrarian Reform ignored women but because, under both the Frei and Allende governments, it promoted the male-headed household as the cornerstone of a new society.Although this emphasis on gender cooperation stressed that men should have more respect for their wives and funneled unprecedented amounts of resources into women's hands, the reform defined men as its protagonists and affirmed their authority over women. This is the first monographic social history of Chile's Agrarian Reform in either English or Spanish, and the first historical work to make sexuality and gender central to the analysis of the reforms.
