YAP's mission is based on two core beliefs: children, like adults, have human and legal rights. At the same time, children are different from adults. Physically, cognitively, emotionally, and psychologically they are works in progress - they require stability and protection to develop their capacities for intelligence, productivity, and empathy. We strive therefore to make the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts one in which children's rights are respected and their potential for growth is nourished. It is in this way that the courts can facilitate the development of personal strengths and diminish the risk of recidivism in children. We invite parents, professionals, community and religious leaders to join us in what must be a crusade for all of our children. Statewide Youth Advocacy exists because New York State continues to fail its children. Our children's health, education, safety, and security are deteriorating at an alarming rate. In a recent report, the Carnegie Corporation of New York documented "a quiet crisis" characterized by "a pattern of neglect [stacking] the deck" against the healthy development of a "staggering number" of American children. Our job as advocates is to work against that stacked deck. We must assure that every child has the love and support necessary to grow up to be a healthy and productive adult. We hope this web site will help empower you to speak up on behalf of the children in your community and across our state. Because children do not vote, we must be their voice.

Extractions: What We Can Help With The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) is a not for profit childrens charity which offers socio-legal advocacy services to children, young people, parents, carers and professionals. NYAS provides independent representation and advice, ensuring that the voice of children and young people can be heard in all matters affecting them. NYAS offers advice, information, support and representation to any child or young person who wants to have their wishes and feelings taken into account when decisions are made about them. NYAS is a safety net for children and young people who have nowhere else to turn. NYAS works for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. NYAS has advocates in most parts of England and Wales, and if a problem cant be sorted out on the free phone helpline, or through email, we can arrange for a meeting with an advocate. A NYAS advocate is someone trained and experienced in working with children and young people and will only take their instructions from the child or young person with a problem. The service is confidential and nothing will be done or said without the young persons consent. ( Unless of course, that young person is in serious danger, and even then no action is taken without them knowing) NYAS is unique in the award of the Community Legal Service Charter Mark and has a team, of lawyers who will represent children and young people if the problem can not be resolved in any other way. We have also recently started a legal service specifically for unaccompanied children who are seeking asylum.
